- In this lesson I describe the process I went through adapting the hymn Amazing Grace into a big band shout chorus.
Examples of tunes that I have given this treatment:
Happy Birthday: • Happy Birthday - Pande...
Sleigh Ride: • Sleigh Ride feat. Caes...
Industry Baby: • What if Lil Nas X's IN...
Hey Mama: • HEY MAMA - David Guett...
Angels We Have Heard On High AND Auld Lang Syne: • Angels We Have Heard O...
I'm sure there are more that I am forgetting... I LOVE writing jazz arrangements of songs that should never be jazz.

I found this series from arranging a pop song into a swing big band chart. Still in the middle of the process but it's so much fun. Although I am the writer and composer for the original song so there's definitely a lot more creative freedom 😂
Currently arranging a Radiohead piece for my school’s big band. This helped tons. Thanks from CO, USA
Cool project. Which song are you doing? A couple of my Los Angeles buddies have made some killer Radiohead jazz covers… check out Max Haymer’s version of Optimistic, and check out Danny Janklow’s version of Creep.
@@PandemoniumBigBand Paranoid Android, I know Ken Schaphorst and James Miley did arrangements of Radiohead but I’ll have to check out the ones you mentioned. They really make some killer charts.
another very practical set of techniques for working musicians! Thank you!
Thankyou so much for playing the original tune 🖤
Been doing such a deep dive on all your videos. Simple and straight forward, these are absolutely awesome. Please keep up all the fantastic work! I have learned so much.
Thank you! Spread the word
Eliot I really enjoy the positive way you show and tell us this concepts. Very nice and funny to see you always smiling during the explanations. My lesson learned here is keep it simple and it will jazz by itself :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another fun arrangement, Elliot. Thanks for sharing your methods!
Thanks Mike!
Enjoyed it, thanks!
Welcome!
Have subbed!
We enjoy it
Very well done video
Thanks!
love your channel!
Thanks!
the thai views must have been mine, haha. i binge-watch a lot of your arranging videos, and i really mean *a lot.*
greetings from thailand, and thank you for your wonderful videos!
Greetings to you too! Glad you enjoy the videos!
Excellent video, as usual. I really admire you for taking on a discussion of things that are rather subjective. Bravo. Two things you sort of toss out in this video that I think would make excellent discussions where: 1.) Any bass note works with the melody if you know how to connect it. True. Actually any bass note can become the root of a note cluster. It would be interesting to hear you comments on constructing bass lines and where that comes in the arranging/composing process. 2.) Jazz is well grounded. True again. And exactly how much do we need to attend to that thought. We've all heard performances, solos, arrangements that went 'too far' and left the audiences behind. What do you do to make sure your charts are well attended by the listeners?
Those would both make excellent deep-dives. I have way more thoughts about the second idea.
This has been a long doubt of mine!
Hopefully this helps
Currently working on a big band project translating ska songs into big band for a big one-off concert. This series has been very helpful. I took jazz arranging in college with Bill Fritz, but have forgotten too much.
That sounds like a super fun and rewarding project. Have you reached out to the Western Standard Time big band? I know they’ve put together a huge library of charts like that. You might be able to save some effort by purchasing some existing charts.
@@PandemoniumBigBand those guys are awesome. If I hit a wall and a windfall I may poke them for charts. My current budget is limited to $0 and whatever personal time I can eke out, so dipping back into jazz arranging I go.
looks like it's going to be a great video!
Hope you like it!
@@PandemoniumBigBand It was great!
Hello from Taiwan🇹🇼 !
Hello from California!
Quite a coincidence as I was thinking about little wing by hendrix
Not enough bagpipes!!
Hey Elliot, nice video ! Watching this in the Uk ! Could you help me with 8 bars where I am stuck on a big band score ? It's the trombones and I just can't get a transcription right. Panic all round here !
Send me an email (in the description)
The band we are hearing from 11:24 onwards - is it programmed or a recording of a real band? Thank you!
Credits at 12:09. The parts were recorded by me and a few of my musician friends at our various home studios.
