I just know from watching vocal analysis videos that Taeyeon uses better singing technique. But technique is only a small portion what makes an artist good. IU has incredible talent not just at singing, and I prefer her singing to any others due to the passion and emotion she can wrap the listener in, but the fact that she writes and produces her own songs and is an amazing actress on top of that, to me makes her the most talented artist in the world right now.

I heard Taeyeon's voice first before I saw her face in the drama Hong gil dong, I dont even know SNSD at that time. I paused the drama just to find who is the Ost singer and I was shooked when i found she was just 18-19 at that time LOL
Taeyeon has the whole package, technique and soul. Taeyeon is like a star shining in the dark, she lights up the darkness with her talent, someone wrote here, Taeyeon sings like a woman who has been divorced 7 times, on the other hand IU sings like a girl who still believes in love, which is lovely, but Taeyeon's singing is much more powerful, strong, her vibrato highs, lows, with a lot of emotion that comes out of the most closed depths of her soul, if anything she is the one who tells a story full of emotion and truth and her control and her notes are exceptional, not to mention her facial experience while singing..and she is also very diverse in singing and music.
Although I listen to IU way more and generally like her songs better I have to say I’m covering songs taeyeon always nails it her song suits all genres, whereas IU seems to have a specific sound in which she’s very aware of so she’s excellent at making songs that are catered to her vocal style, and when other artists cover it (even taeyeon) it’s still not as the original. Like for example Friday suits IUs voice more than taeyeons.
