In 1986 I was in the 7th grade & went on a school Washington DC field trip from California to the east coast. On one stop in NYC to the statue of liberty I saw a SANESMITH burner on a subway train & another one under a bridge by lady liberty & was forever hooked on all things graffiti! Since then I considered new york graffiti to be the best. Great documentary, love love love it!!!
The first two names I recall seeing up when I became aware of graffiti. Excellent doc. SMITH is a really great guy and I’m glad you were able to get him for this piece.
I’ve done exhibition shows on SaneSmith & came out on The Source for it. Now I’m bless being part of this NYC iconic documentary thank you New York City ACK 1989- Today Slae-Ya
One of the best films I've ever seen!!! Absolutely beautiful, just one of those stories that needed telling for a very long time now...much love from Berlin ❤️💚💙🩵🤎🖤
Foreal my first video ever viewed was art of story telling …. Teenagers from mars ….this tops all of them … amazing work … respect to the legends that wrote with these legends…. Truly thank you for making this … respect
It’s also wild how they have super early photos as tags, before digital cameras it seemed like a waste of film so it wasn’t really done unless you were at the end of the roll and were in a rush to get flicks of pieces developed 😂 I’m so glad people took them.
The first time I heard about SANE it was many many moons ago. I was reading an article in Rolling Stone magazine that put me up on JA XTC & SET at that time Magazines were the Internet. To this day, I still have the clippings cut out of Rolling Stone. That had to be probably about 30 years ago. GRAFFITI IN PEACE Modesto California
There used to be an old forum about NYC gang life and they had a whole thread about FK crew from Washington Heights, where some old members discussed how they proudly bullied Sane and Smith as they were white boys from the neighbourhood. The FK crew I think became a more infamous drug gang in the late 80s Wild Cowboy era.
EXTREMELY COOL BROS, JOT INTRODUCED ME TO THEM,I STOPPED PEOPLE FROM JUMPING THEM AROUND LATE 87,IT'S JEWEL, MAY NOT REMEMBER ME BUT I WAS THERE ON 175TH ST .......
I met Smith bombing by himself late night on170 Grand Concourse...He was Kool, serious and to himself a real DareDevil to be roaming the streets late night getting up...This was around 1986 he was already up and known.
Sane, Smith & Pink still has a full amount of tunnels tag still living in every 5 borough till this day. Krylon & Rustos can hold up a Life time in Tunnels
In clip 1:50 we see two pic showing one of the two possibly both brothers posing yet in clip 2:19 the same dude is concealing his identity. WTF is that all about? AHahahahahahaha
Really did not know much about a “Graffiti Culture” or however it is known. Not until all the coverage about the huge building in LA being covered with it. I just assumed most was done by kids, the ones who write on the walls at grade school. However it is really eye opening to learn that it is really adults, not children, doing most of the graffiti around town. That realization brings to mind the social behavior badge called the “Peter Pan Syndrome” (After Peter Pan in the books & movie with Captain Hook etc.) defined as: “Peter Pan syndrome (PPS), while not a recognized diagnosis, is a popular psychology term used to describe an adult who has difficulty growing up. People with this syndrome exhibit a series of social behaviors, ideologies and traits that are considered immature. In most cases, they may struggle with commitment, maintaining employment, doing chores, keeping up with responsibilities and having purposeful direction in their lives.” Wonder what will come of these man-boys outside of the tagger circle of bragging rights as if a substitute status to give the impression of a larger penis!
