    How can you compare a Van with BFG AT's (even worn but doesnt look too bad on transit) to a van with regular C grade tyre... come one that is a joke ;) Install At's on the Sprinter and in this light terrain it wont spin for a second.. We do love what you guys are doing and wish in Europe there would be ever a chance to buy Quigley Transit rather than standard Ford's AWD,but this comparison is just completely wrong ;)

    I came to comment on the unfair comparison only to find that i'm not the only one. The ford has real off road tires with right amount of pressure while the sprinter has stock road tires that are probably hard as stone to show of how it bounces. My guess is you were to lazy to get real tires for the sprinter or you were afraid it would perform to good. Only an unbiased video will tell the truth.

    I have an all wheel drive Chevy Express with the locker in the back that will dog that 4 by 4 in the snow

    Ford says the AWD Transit can apply 100% power to any wheel that needs it through the transfer case. Mercedes says the 4x4 Sprinter has an open differential that will apply 65% power to the rear wheels and 35% power to the front wheels and uses braking to stop a spinning wheel. Appears to me you are being very deceptive here by using the term AWD to a 65/35 Mercedes 4x4 system and comparing the Ford Transit to a Sprinter 4x4 system while inferring you are comparing it to a Ford 65/35 AWD which does not exist. I would like to have your Ford Transit 4x4 conversion compared to a Ford Transit AWD without using any terminology or technology from a Mercedes 4x4 Sprinter. Will you do that please so someone can make an informed decision comparing a Ford Transit AWD to your Ford Transit 4x4 conversion? It is quite possible and may be a better choice to purchase a 2WD Ford Transit and have you install a 4x4 conversion but you need to compare a Ford to a Ford to sell me.

    You "wanted to" use the same tires? The test is invalid, you can't do a comparison with different tires, different payloads, etc. Both vehicles have to be the same and have the same weight distribution.
    And:
    Both fundamental 4WD and AWD systems use hypoid differentials which means that only the wheel with least friction moves. Both systems can use ABS to control wheel spin. And a manufacturer doesn't have to use 65/35, they can make the ratio 50/50 if they want. You can use limited slip differentials in your design but so can AWD.
    There's NO TRACTION DIFFERENCE, the only difference is that a 4WD enables you to control when the system is in use and an AWD usually does not.

      I can't find any videos of it but do you think the awd transit can drive in soft sand with the tires aired down? I really want one but it needs to be able to go on soft sand

      @@808Mark Lowering tire pressure lowers ride height which creates other problems in sand. You need to find tires specifically designed for sand driving but don't expect great results on the road for the same reason people change out their studded snows in the summer.

      Toogood we wanted to but did not have the opportunity for this shoot. We will say the BFGs were closer to racing slicks (significant wear) than true all-terrain tread.

      I was getting flats on my new Goodyear Wrangler stock street tires while driving on the interstate. I switched to Nitto Terra Grapplers and couldn't be more happy. I think to be fair, you should use the same tires on both vehicles for an honest comparison.

    That was a really good explanation! I have an 03 chevy astro awd with the g80 rear locker ,it gives me a little more capability and I'm adding a torsen front lsd

    Is there a way to install a Quigley 4x4 system on a 2020 Ford Transit AWD, and to switch from one to another depending on the terrain?

      Do you have a awd transit? Have you tried going on soft sand with the tires aired down?

    Is the Quigley system shift on the fly? If not, it is going to be a pain to use on the road during winter where it snows.
    When the shift on the fly system went out on my f150, but I could still shift into 4wd once I stopped, it was the biggest pain ever. Bordering on dangerous during real world scenarios while driving in areas that snow.

      You can shift to 4x4 high on the fly up to 50mph. To shift into 4x4 low (which is really only needed for rock crawling style situations), you need to come to a complete stop.

    what are you showing here? Did sprinter use AWD 3 years ago??? Old Sprinter was 4x4.

    Will a 4WD Transit have power in all 4 wheels or just one powered wheel front and back?

      Since the system is not equipped with locking differentials, there are some situations where only 1 front and 1 rear would be turning

      Freedom51 I’ll go ahead and speculate that Quigley will show that the transfer case Ford is using is an open differential and only relies on the ABS system for torque distribution much like this video. Yes, it can transfer 100% to the front, but that’s not really what anyone wants in a low traction situation.

      @@joekirklin Aside from parts availability, there is nothing stopping someone from installing limited slip diffs. You would have the same performance. Ragging on awd systems is just dumb. A sti (probably any of them) will greatly outperform a modded Quigley van with respect to traction on dirt. It might not have the articulation, but that isnt what is being compared here.

    The quigley has no abs control, so is only as good as it's worse 2 tires aka you'd actually be better off with a locker 2wd car.
    Let's not forget about mercedes huge off roading heritige in trucks. The engine is not bogging down because the brakes. It's bogging because it's only giving power to wheels with grip.

      You have a point.
      The ABS system is used to emulate a locking diff across an axle.
      The Quigley system seems to be a mechanical centre diff-lock with open front and rear diffs, and while a centre diff-lock is excellent in slippery conditions and climbing… you’re correct - as soon as one wheel on an axle spins, that axle no longer provides any traction.
      With locking front and/or rear diffs that axle would still provide traction, as would the software EDL using the ABS.
      Downsides of the manufacturers’ ABS EDL is that
      They overheat the brakes with continued off-road use, and
      They create a start / stop type of forward motion in difficult conditions.
      I guess it’s always a compromise between intended use, driver knowledge and ultimately cost.
      This system is a decent 4x4 system that will be way superior to the standard vehicle.
      And remember tires!
      A 2wd vehicle with aggressive tires will be superior to a 4x4 on street tires in loose conditions.
