About tipping in USA! In a restaurant, the norm of tipping is 15% to the total before sale tax. Sale tax is about 9% of the total in NYC. You tip the bartender, the bell boy who takes your luggage to the hotel room, you tip the taxi driver, you tip the service maid at your hotel (everyday is fine but people tend to tip when they leave the hotel).Google it and see how much you should tip. As of restaurant, you don't have to tip if the waiter/waitress is not doing their job correctly, is rude, and dirty. Waitpeople are not paid by minimum wage, normally just $3 an hour, and they depend on tip for a living. So just tip! That is one part of American culture, different from other cultures in the world.
Quit making excuses about tipping. Is it the customer's fault if the employer is not obeying minimum wage law? And where do you go when you say "...you don't have to tip if the waiter is not doing their job correctly..." I have experienced waiters running after customers to demand more tip eventhough the customer had stated very clearly it was bad service and bad food.
I didn't tip because the waitstaff was incompetent in rendering services, not because of the taste of food that I didn't like. i didn't tip because of servers' bad attitudes as well. Only in USA , the waitstaff never gets minimum wages throughout the nation. I can say about 98% customers in Manhattan tip, 2% don't tip because of the above reasons. A small fraction of American customers don't tip because they are cheap and nasty themselves. In Europe the waitstaff gets paid a good wage, therefore the price of each course is very high. A breakfast in an average London pub (restaurant) costs almost 10 pounds, almost 20 dollars whereas the same quality restaurant in US is on the average 10 dollars. Look at how the waitstaff serves in a Japanese restaurant in the US, always impeccable service. I usually left 25-30% tip. I didn't tip for bad service to send a message that please correct your service that you will deserve better, please change your bad attitude. I'd like the European way, this way no one has any complaint. Let the owner deal with bad and incompetent servers and obnoxious customers.
có lẻ đối với những nước phát triển như nước họ thì mỹ cũng giống nước họ thôi công trình kiến trúc cũng tương tự nên có vẻ họ thích đi du lịch ở những nước có văn hoá bản sắc dân tộc hơn
Congrats to both, Beom and Toc. Wow, too much prejudice comments on this. Every country has its good and bad as well as people. Harlem is known for high crime rate. NYC is known for high price. US has 51 states, each has its own beauty and culture. If one only visit or live in one place then generalize the whole country, then it’s unfair and illustrates prejudice. California, Florida, Hawaii, Guam are known for beaches. So please be open mind and more research before generating comments. From California

If you want to visit USA, only go to New York City, nowhere else. NYC is not only an American city, but you can call it an international city. You can find reasonable hotels, meals and shopping. And only in NYC. Transportation in NYC is superb, effective and cheap. You want high-end Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai food, you have 3 Asian (Chinese) towns in 3 boroughs of NYC (Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn). NYC doesn't have a variety of fruits like in VN but there are plenty of fruits with reasonable price. For shopping there are plenty of shops that sell clothes, souvenirs, artsy things as souvenirs. Art (paintings, music, dance, photography, comedy etc. ) is plenty (entrance fee is reasonable). Museums are the best in the world. Food is of all kinds: French, Italian, South American, Africa, Middle Eastern, Spain, and many many other countries of the 5 continents. Food in VN is much cheaper. Hotel price can be comparable to US. If you like the beach then go to VN, there is no swimmable ocean in USA, except in Florida. But there is nothing else in Florida except the beautiful swimmable beaches. If you are an outdoors person then you can visit California, Washington state, Arizona (maybe? because it is hot). Everything else in USA is ordinary, nothing memorable except that you will have a relaxing time. As of architecture, NYC offers the best, next is Washington D.C (but going around in D.C is not convenient at all, you will spend a lot of money by using taxis). Beom, congratulations! I wish you best luck, find a job you love. Vietnam is the best bet! Close to Korea. if you want to visit USA, prepare at least 2 weeks, not one week. Remember only NYC, nowhere else. It takes like 24 hrs from Korea to NYC, remember that. I also wish that you will be able to visit USA (NYC) in the future. A lot of Koreans are very lucky to settle in NYC, there is a big Korean community here too. Best Wishes, Beom. Thank you for spreading cultural exchange between VN and Korea. We need a generation like you and Thanh/A Sinh to make our world better. Thanks a zillion times. LOVE YOU!
I grew up in the US, traveled to Europe, Australia, Asia and lived 10 yrs in VN, I'm now back in the US - and I can tell you that I absolute hate the culture of tipping here in the US. It's an obligation, and those people actually chase after you if you don't tip enough. That's right, I didn't say "don't tip", I said don't tip ENOUGH. Even if you tip them 10% or 12%, for bad service, cold food or late food, they still complain to you directly without any embarrassment. And if your group is more than 6-8 people, they automatically, that's right, automatically, add 18% on your bill for tip. To top it all off, I absolutely despise those American and some Western travelers who goes to Vietnam and criticize Vietnamese businesses who charge extra $1 (25,000 dong) for a bowl of noodle in district 1 (the financial district and tourist part of HCMC) while they don't utter a peep at being charged $9.50 for a stale hotdog at an American tourist site. As for guns, this country have had 17 MASS shootings since 1st Jan 2019 to now, that's "mass shootings" that involved shooting into a crowd. From this 17 mass shootings, there were 102 deaths + more injuries. This 17 does NOT include incidents of shooting someone individually, nor does it include accidental death/injury because of mishandling of guns. This country is so used to it that 90% of these mass shootings aren't even reported in national news. As for shootings at school, there have been 38 shootings in school, from kindergarten to college, since 2013, that's right, over only 6 years, more than 38 shooting at schools. And there are at least 35% of the population (not the gov't but the so-called ordinary people) that want more guns to be made available.
I live in USA too for over 40 years, worked in high end restaurants where we had Americans as well as foreigners. These were rich customers and foreigners knew about tipping customs in USA. All of them tipped generously. Well anyway, they are rich. I have friends who work in ordinary restaurants suffered a lot because a good percentage of Americans did not tip either for whatever reasons. In NYC, waitstaff had to deal with a lot of foreigners and no one cared to tip, therefore the waitstaff had to add a 18% tip to the bill. I agree that it is tacky that a server runs after customers demanding more tips. In that case, you don't have to argue, say anything and just walk away. Of course, I prefer the European way, waitstaff gets a good wage and do their job, without worrying about little money they make for the day because a lot of customers stiff them. You know what is a bad service. The restaurant is not quite busy, you need salt and pepper, you ask the waiter for them and it takes 10 minutes for him to come back. That's bad! Well, we live in USA and should follow the tipping customs.
Yeah, those Americans are very open-minded. Like how they tell their dark color skin own citizens to "go back home" eventhough they were born in the US. Or how they are still denying their slavery history. Or how they shoot black 12 years old boy playing in the street but will only arrest a white woman while she's kicking the police offer. or how they separate children from their parents and keep those children in cages. or how they call police on black people enjoying picnic. or how they call police to arrest a customer who happens to speak Spanish to their own friend. Or how they are deporting Cambodian and Vietnamese that have lived and worked and paid tax for the last 15 years and separate those people from their parents/children. Keep on worshiping the American tho Om thom. Why don't you visit the US and experience that deeply American cultural phenomenon of mass shooting. Next time you open your fat mouth about how great America is, why don't you stop and read a little bit of news you stupid fuck.

Please read my comments on USA traveling. Remember NYC. You can find a variety of food with prices as much as in Korea. Pho in NYC only costs from 7-10 dollars. 10 dollars are for an XL bowl of PHO. Art, architecture, nightlife, are the best in the world. People are friendly too. Transportation is superb, cheap I must say. Public transportation I mean: subway and bus. NYC is a heaven for shopping, so much bargain. Vietnam has a large variety of tropical fruits and cheap, has beautiful beaches, seafood is lower than in USA. It has mountains and oceans, NYC has rich nightlife, music, dance, clubs, street entertainers. Museums are the best in the world. Downtown Manhattan is very quaint, cozy and full of fun. On the other hand, if you want a high-end vacation, then NYC can be the most expensive city in the world.
Yep, love those franchise food with no soul and no characters in the US. And ooooh, all those original soda drinks that consist of the lovely sugar and chemical flavoring.
