  • It's never too early to hit the local trails to get in shape for the summer backpacking season. It's also fun and gets you out of the house. If me and Trainwreck can get our broken down bodies out there then so can you!

    Great video you're right Ape Man I need to be out training instead of sitting at home watching Netflix. Your weight loss looks good on you, you look healthy.

    Some of the best time of the year to do trail maintenance. Treadwork gets a chance to wash and settle in. Brushing doesn't look like an mess of dead leaves and the green fills back in come spring. Volunteering is a great way to keep in shape and give back to what we love.

      I’d like to start volunteering for sure. Still need to work part time for a while. I do try to pick up trash on my hikes.

    Good to see you out and about AM! My niece and fam are just north of Nevada City and getting some nice snow. But that also brings downed power lines and questionable road access. They are off the grid and doing well so far. I am right in your ballpark as far as body issues. You are right! ya gotta get out and try to keep up your muscle mass for the coming hiking season. I am 72 and my goal this next year is to do the North to South Lake Loop.( I've always wanted to put my hands on the Muir Hut) My hope and prayer is that BOTH of us can do those bucket list items on our lists. Keep the videos coming when you can buddy. We are the same ships going in the same direction. I will be damned if I let my body down trying to hike my Sierras! I hope to see you on the trail buddy!....I am Sloth hiker...I go slow BUT I WILL get there!!!!!!!!!!!

      Nevada City area is beautiful but really got hammered with these storms. We need the moisture though and the Sierra is going to be ready for us and hopefully not on fire this summer. North Lake to South Lake is an epic hike. Have fun!

    Great to hear your knee successes. Got both hips in 2011, gave me my life back. I'd like to do some backpack fishing in the southern sierras this summer. Any suggestions on bang for the hiking buck? Thanks

    • @ApeMan
      @ApeMan  2 года назад

      So many choices. A true fisherman doesn’t divulge the sensitive lakes and streams but I will give some advice. For goldens, small, head out over cottonwood pass. For easy access to beautiful streams and lakes start at onion valley and head over Kearsarge Pass. Peeler Lake is really pretty and has plenty of room for lots of campers and good fishing for large rainbows. The Benson Lake loop nearby is also good fishing. Tight lines!

    You're not wrong, but it's way effing harder when it's minus 30F and there are only 3 hours of daylight. You Californians have NO excuse.

    Can you recommend a book with trail information or website about trails in Yosemite. I don’t think I can take 2 or weeks to do the JMT but maybe a section of it . What section would you recommend to get the most bang for my buck ? Thanks for all your help and time.

    • @ApeMan
      @ApeMan  2 года назад +1

      Sierra North is a great trail guide for the Northern Sierra.. Permit is tough to get but a hike from Tuolumne Meadows to Garnet and Thousand Island Lakes is a nice section of the JMT. An easier permit would be to hike north out of Tuolumne Meadows along the pct and come out around the Hoover Wilderness. Just a beautiful stretch of trail. Yosemite can be crowded and permits are harder to get. I like the Onion Valley trailhead and cottonwood lakes trailhead for good access to the southern JMT with higher trail quotas that are easier to get. Maybe use that as a backup plan. Happy trails.

    What’s a good average pack weight for a nearly 60 year old back packer on the JMT . Also what size pack would you suggest I have a 60 liter ( granite gear) .

    • @ApeMan
      @ApeMan  2 года назад +1

      I think a 60 liter pack is a good size for the JMT. Getting really light can be expensive. It’s important to be in good shape so you can handle all the weight of extra food after resupplies. A good average weight is 35# but you will probably be over 40 on the longer stretches with no resupply options. I got up to 50 a couple times because I wanted my daughter to be comfortable. I was uncomfortable. I would average closer to 30 with my current setup $$$$$! Don’t leave items behind that compromise your safety or comfort. A shakedown hike before your JMT trip would be a good idea to iron out the kinks. Happy trails!

    So what keeps you hiking as you do mile after miles on scenic trails? Is it the thought of how good it will feel next summer when you are in shape and hiking along? Or is it the thought of how the hiking will improve your health?

    • @ApeMan
      @ApeMan  2 года назад

      Good question. This covid crap and short days makes me stir crazy and I just need to get outside in the winter. Where I live we have fantastic trails and state park is 5 minutes away. Air pods and blogs keep me company on the trail. Keeping up good health and weight in my 60s is another motivator but I also like to be able to hike faster than my trail buddies in the summer
