Oh shit, I haven't seen this in years. One of my parents had it on her office computer and I used to play it all the time. I specifically remember playing the flying toaster and the lawn mowing games
I did tech support for Berkeley Systems back in the late 90's, but don't recall this as being one of the titles we supported (or maybe it was so rare, we never got calls on it). I think it was just After Dark screensaver packages, the Espresso calendar/organizer software and the You Don't Know Jack games (I think I still have some pre-release copies of that). The most annoying calls were from cocky 'power users' who were running Windows NT on their home computers and wondering why the software had issues or wouldn't run at all. It was fun pointing out that the packages didn't indicate Windows NT compatibility (there was a logo for that for compatible software to use) and specifically only listed Windows 3.x/95/98 requirements (though some would argue Windows NT 3.5.1 was "Windows 3.x"), so we couldn't help them.
I imagine the conversation going something like this: TECH: Thanks for calling Berkeley Systems, how can I help you? CALLER: After Dark screen saver won't work properly on my NT computer. Bla Bla Bla, Ramble Ramble Ramble. TECH: CALLER: So yeah, that's what I figure is causing this problem. Did you get all that? TECH: Yep. Here's what I think you should do: RTFM, Foo! CALLER: Hello??? Can I at least get a case number? Hello???
Correctly written Windows games would run on Windows NT. It's unfortunate that substandard coding practices pervaded game development until Windows XP forced them to do it right.
FUN FACT: Some of the sound effect assets used in this title are also featured in the game EVERQUEST. For example, the dog sound is also the sound Gnolls make and the "chime" sound from the pool table is the same sound you'll hear coming from Pixies. To my understanding - many of these sound assets are in the public domain (much like those in the original DOOM) so a keen ear will hear them in many other videogames, TV Shows and movies!
I vaguely remember this cartoon for some reason. I can't remember when it was on or what channel, and I had forgotten all about it, but it's kind of coming back to me now.
I've wondered why people make shit, especially animated shit. You can literally do Disney quality in a day or so in Blender and so many free art and animation softwares like my favorite Krita. Yet companies keep wanting to make so low and useless trash as possible like it's a negative budget.
Aboveup Nah, Potato counter extreme is universally praised. And is LIGHTYEARS better than anything on the after dark games collection. I mean I've played some good ass games. Ninja gaiden, fallout 2, hotline Miami, the last of us, Yakuza, the witcher ect. And NONE even come close mate.
Amaranthus616 same! I remember playing toaster run for hours on end right after I got home from school. Now if only he covered monsters Inc pinball, and that military flight sim that I can't remember well I'd be in heaven.
omg i cant believe you covered after dark games and i never knew about it. i usually just watched ur sims stuff lol. i was born in 2000 and my whole fam would play after dark games religiously. i always got stuck on mahjong because i was like 4 and didnt understand. but HULA GIRL AND TOASTER RUN WAS THE JAM.
*_Toaster run has been buried in my mind for nearly a decade and a half._* I distinctly remember the image of the toaster with wings flying out of a window in a computer game WAY back (for me) when I was like five. I think my sister was playing that game. I remembered that for years, wanting to find it but knowing nowhere to look. A year ago, I found a CD case advertising After Dark screensavers on the back, but not a game. I immediately recognized the toaster, but since it was a screensaver and not a game, I dismissed that image in my mind as only a fabrication by my imagination. I stopped believing this game existed. Now I see it thirteen years later on my RUclips feed, confirming what I wanted to believe all those years. Thank you, Clint. I finally know I'm sane.
Allow me to make your day trivia tastic! Rodger Dodger was an AD 4.0 screensaver. The Games version is an updated port on a smaller resolution. The Bad Dog, Hula Girl, and Roof Rats games are present in 4.0 as well (at least the Plus version). In fact, many of the games reference the 4.0 version, although Mooshu includes older references as well (such as the mime in Mime Hunt from Totally Twisted, who was also on the TV during the Toaster Run clip).
As a young kid at only 20 years old, i never played any of the other LGR games as a kid, but this one. This is the first LGR video of a game I actually played as a kid! Much nostalgia
I randomly remembered these while half asleep and I jumped up to search the one phrase I remembered from these games and found this video. I’d like to personally thank you for making this video because now I can sleep knowing this game actually exists.
Holy crappppp you just made me realize we had this on our computer in the early 2000s! I had no idea/recollection until I seen this video. I remember spending all day on the computer playing these. I think they came already installed. I thought they were sooo cool. Man, that's crazy how things just come back to you !
Growing up in the early 2000s, my brother and I would go to our grandparents house and they had After Dark Games! We played for years and this game still has a piece of my heart. Thanks for sharing this and turbo starting my nostalgia :)
This was my first experience at video games. I was to young to understand companies and to see you cover this brings back so many memories of running to my grandmas and grandpas to play that box game or to mess around as the toaster. Thanks for sharing this bit of the past
This is the game comp Ive been looking for since I was a kid. Thank you so much for triggering that memory, definitely going to find this and replay for nostalgia!
I found your channel fairly recently, and have been binge watching your videos!! I love them so much! My favorite videos are when you find games that are forgotten. Its interesting to me. I also like the ones on old software and computers. Keep up the good work!
Oh my gooooosh. I spent so many hours, nay, days in these games as a kid. This was part of what got me obsessed with screensavers. I miss when screensavers were special and people cared about them and made fun little things like this.
Anyone else here want after dark to return today? Granted screensavers have no point now, but they were pretty to look at; imagine having them on your pc today, throw in a new game collection and we're gold! Or another idea, someone contact GoG and get after dark games on there!
I remember the flying toasters from my school computer but have very few memories of any of the others. Still, this was a delightful look at some neat mini-games from a cool source, which is the type of thing I love about this channel.
Now I want a "Flying Clint" screensaver. just like flying toasters, but with his head coming across. And maybe some LGR logos and floppies or whatever. Screw it, there should be an editor that enables you to use whatever you want for Flying Toaste4rs/Flying WIndow/Starfield kind of screensaver.
We used to play the game in our elementary school computer lab. The Flying toaster mini game was the one of the best mini game. Roger dodger is like Chips challenge, looks good.
This was terrific! I was never fortunate enough to get any "After Dark" screen saver games and the lawn mowing one looks especially awesome (along with navigating a flying toaster. I was almost wondering if the toaster would get fried if it landed in the bathtub).
I miss those old screen savers... for whatever reason seeing the dog (I think it was different from but similar to this one) walk out into the desktop and dig/mess with shortcuts etc just blew my mind lol
There was a screensaver from the 90s called Johnny Castaway that was literally some guys adventures on a stranded island. Way before Tom Hanks made it into a movie. Oh how I loved watching the screen saver as a kid.
I remember playing After Dark Games on my old Pentium deskop. It wasn't until recently that i rediscovered the games thanks to your video. The nostalgia is real.
I kinda want that just for the flying toasters! I think that was always my favorite screensaver of theirs.... I even downloaded one on one of my previous computers...
OMG thanks for the ID! I played Roof Rats, MooShu, Fish Shtick, and Bad Dog 911 a lot as a kid and was never able to find what the games were until now.
Seeing the Flying Toasters game in particular brought back quite a few memories. Not that I played that particular one, but I played a whole lot of other Glider games on my old Performa.
As soon as I saw the video in my Subscriptions feed, I just had to watch. I fondly remember playing After Dark Games as a kid both at my grandparents' house and my parents' house. It's a bummer that it's not available for newer computers (not that I know of), because I would like to play these games again. I played Roof Rats the most out of all the games.
No Rock Paper Scissors Tournament Fighter? Well, poop! What a missed opportunity! :) I remember After Dark screensavers on my family's first home computer when I was twelve. Thanks for the look back, Clint!
Diggin’ the new haircut, you look great! Also wanted to say that your uploading schedule on Monday’s &Friday’s is really just perfect! Thanks again for another awesome vid! 😊
I played this as a kid on my uncle's computer. I actually remember this over the After Dark screensavers. When you did your video on the screensavers I got confused cause I thought it was a game. XD
I totally forgot about these games until I was watching a jontron video that mentioned a lawn mowing game and I suddenly had flashbacks to the after dark lawn mowing game. Wow totally unlocked this memory of my favorite childhood games
I was born in 2001, but seeing the After Dark visuals as a kid really stuck with me. Same thing with other media from the 90's, like The Gate to the Mind's Eye, Rayman, and surreal 90's cg art made with programs like Bryce. I love the flying toasters, I'd like to get a tattoo of one someday.
I used to play this on my parent's first PC! The Lawn Mower game and Flying toaster were definitely the best ones on there. The trivia game was absolutely impossible for me when I was five.
Back when I was in 1st grade, this was one of the only games on our classroom's computer, so it was insanely popular. Pretty much everyone in class went to play the Mowin' Maniac game, while pretty much no one played Fish Shtick or Bad Dog 911. I saw the game for sale years later at a Walgreens, and I regretted not seeing it until my mom and I were leaving. In hindsight, though, I'm not torn up about not getting the game. I'm fine with just watching videos of it on RUclips.
Now that is a shirt I need in my life! I never knew there was an After Dark games, and after seeing this, the only ones that appeal to me are the Mowin' Maniac and Toaster Run.
Once when I took a PFT (Pulmonary Functions Test, I'm very prone to pneumonia) and one of the animations to help encourage kids was the gluing toaster; only now do I realise that it was a reference. Makes me wonder how many of the other animations were like that...
Wow this is a blast from the past, the school library had these games installed on all the Apple Macintosh computers in the computer lab. I fondly remember playing foggy boxes and Mowin’ man
I remember I was about 4 years old when I played this on a Windows Millennium computer. I also used to enjoy another game called Wild Wheels and Rollercoaster Factory 3 which were absolutely wonderful games. This was a great video as always. "Big deal." ~ Clown at the results screen in Toaster Run.
I love how some Linux window managers still have an After-Dark inspired flying toaster screensaver option, but the toasters have jet wings instead of bird wings.
For those asking about the Flying Toasters shirt, you can get them here!
www.etsy.com/listing/538164893/cool-flying-toasters-shirt
If you like Lawnmower games check out Mowin' and Throwin' for the PC!
Fail.
The shirt should be blank until you fall asleep, at which time the toasters should appear. :)
That is a fabulous shirt! 💜👌🏼
Raider0001 he pulls it off so well too 😂
What about the other stuff? :)
It looks like they put all the effort into the Flying Toasters game and everything else is tacked on. Those pre-rendered environments look GORGEOUS!
Oh shit, I haven't seen this in years. One of my parents had it on her office computer and I used to play it all the time. I specifically remember playing the flying toaster and the lawn mowing games
Ugh those early 3D renders in Toaster Run are what dreams are made of
seriously, that aesthetic is so nostalgic for me it almost hurts. I feel bad that gen z will never know the absolute joys of this era of computers
I did tech support for Berkeley Systems back in the late 90's, but don't recall this as being one of the titles we supported (or maybe it was so rare, we never got calls on it). TECH: Yep. Here's what I think you should do: RTFM, Foo!

I owned these games, they were fun. Probably came prepackaged with a computer.
Correctly written Windows games would run on Windows NT. It's unfortunate that substandard coding practices pervaded game development until Windows XP forced them to do it right.
Dump the pre releases you have so we can back them up!!
Probably the support was done by Sierra.
OMG I played this all the time at my grandma’s house as a kid! Totally forgot it was a thing. I loved the Hula Twins one.
Nothing better than a video of LGR to finish the week in style!
"Yes my lord" xD
Masashi - ruclips.net/video/PoMhMZZjbGg/видео.html
This was my introduction into PC gaming. I absolutely loved this as a child ♥️

I was a colorist on that Bad Dog cartoon, with Silicon Graphics machines. Boring job, ugly cartoon. I didn't even know it came from After Dark.
sirkowski cartoons in the 1990s were sometimes like that anyways.
I vaguely remember this cartoon for some reason. I can't remember when it was on or what channel, and I had forgotten all about it, but it's kind of coming back to me now.
@@Blood-PawWerewolf The general quality was even worse in the 1980s in my experience.
Are you girls
I've wondered why people make shit, especially animated shit.
You can literally do Disney quality in a day or so in Blender and so many free art and animation softwares like my favorite Krita. Yet companies keep wanting to make so low and useless trash as possible like it's a negative budget.
These games really remind me of the old Neopets flash games. In both game variety and quality.
RoofRats is literally Destruct-o-Match
I would bet money that these were made with Macromedia Authorware!
The font in that first game definitely looks like Neopets font.
I really want to see Clint getting some of the After Dark merch in the future.
I remember this, we got it shortly after our first PC. Loved it. We had it alongside Hoyle's Board/Card games.
Amaranthus616 has
Amaranthus616 same! I remember playing toaster run for hours on end right after I got home from school. Now if only he covered monsters Inc pinball, and that military flight sim that I can't remember well I'd be in heaven.
I remember a battleship game by Hoyle where your opponent is a person's face on your grid that verbally taunts you through the entire game.
Amaranthus616 Ah yes, Hoyle PC games...
My uncle had this game and I played soo much of this during Christmas! Saved me from having to socialize during the holidays and I am so grateful.
omg i cant believe you covered after dark games and i never knew about it. i usually just watched ur sims stuff lol. i was born in 2000 and my whole fam would play after dark games religiously. i always got stuck on mahjong because i was like 4 and didnt understand. but HULA GIRL AND TOASTER RUN WAS THE JAM.
Grandparents still own this and they still install it on everything new PC they get, oh the classics
I'm in the nastoglic camp. After Dark games was a early childhood obsession of mine. They are so weird to me they feel like a dream now.
@Jerem0y I started and finished law school since this comment. And yes the flying toaster was amazing
Clint, your videos are some of the best on RUclips. Words can’t express how much I enjoy your content, especially your reviews.
Aw yeah-we’re getting some After Dark action from LGR.
Oh my!
*_Toaster run has been buried in my mind for nearly a decade and a half._*

After Dark for old Macs had Lunatic Fringe, a space game, which was awesome

I.... completely forgot this collection existed. This really ripped out something locked behind a door in my mind. Wow. Nostalgia

Heh, benchwatching. Autocorrect is funny.
Roran Vanq ?
It's "binge watching" videos. Unless I'm mistaken and you were referring to something else.
Roran Vanq oh my bad!! I always say benchwatching, not sure why 😅 let me edit my comment now, i guess its just a habit i picked up
That's okay! Just glad I could help.

Flying Toasters!!
My grandma had this game on her computer when I was a little kid. I played them so many times ! I've waited a long time for this video! Thx LGR
Anyone else here want after dark to return today?
Granted screensavers have no point now, but they were pretty to look at; imagine having them on your pc today, throw in a new game collection and we're gold!

This brought up deep forgotten memories of my childhood. I remember a few of those games :D those were the times.

Had this when I was a kid and was waiting for this! Thanks for making this Clint!
This brings me back. I used to own the After Dark Games and Screensavers
When do we get LGR After Dark?
I want some of that Nightime Clint Action!
T4silly ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
... That's supposed to be a facepalm.
Seriously read your comment as “i want some of that nighttime c------nt variety” 😂
Clint your channel is basically my childhood, totally love LGR!

I always loved the simple star burst screen saver.
It is insane the memories this video brought back that I completely forgot about. Thanks for this video!
I have been waiting for this ever since you did the After Dark Screensavers!!
I myself have the flying toasters as my screensaver on my windows 10 PC. Friends think i´m weird.
Thank you LGR, much appreciated review. Glad your back Clint. Better than ever.
Omg we had this when I was like 4, that flying toaster music
OMG after all these years I finally found a game I was looking for from my younger years thanks to your video: Mowin' Maniac!
There was a screensaver from the 90s called Johnny Castaway that was literally some guys adventures on a stranded island. Way before Tom Hanks made it into a movie. Oh how I loved watching the screen saver as a kid.
Ahhh! I've been hoping you'd make this for so long! You've made my week.
Im so excited to find that you did a review on these!!!
I get you about the lawn mowing. Theres a mini game in Bully where you mow a lawn in a time limit to get paid more. Its sooooo satisfying to do!!
I forgot about this. I had the after dark games demo from the hoyle casino cd game. I was jealous of the games I couldn't play.
Thank you for the shout out to Chip's Challenge. I still love that game 100% to this day. So rich.
I played Roof Rats the most out of all the games.
the memories, i remember playing most of these as a child, wish i still had the and box
Missed you Clint. You are such a pleasant guy to both look at and listen to. Keep up the good work. You make my day man :-)
These videos make me so happy. like the happy I get watching The Computer Chronicles.
I love LgR atmosphere
No Rock Paper Scissors Tournament Fighter? Well, poop! What a missed opportunity! :) I remember After Dark screensavers on my family's first home computer when I was twelve. Thanks for the look back, Clint!
These came preloaded on my early 200's Gateway. Good times
Diggin’ the new haircut, you look great! Also wanted to say that your uploading schedule on Monday’s &Friday’s is really just perfect! Thanks again for another awesome vid! 😊
Fun fact: Berkeley also developed the first You don’t know jack cd rom games!
I remember this. One of my friends had this and installed it on my computer back in the early 2000’s. I had so much fun with it.
Ha! I just installed After Dark 2.0 on my newly-acquired Macintosh SE earlier this week! Love the shirt, and as always, great video!
I had a copy of this on my old laptop as a kid. It was one of my favorites!
Wait, I remember that Bad Dog cartoon. THIS is what it was based on?
PollyGlodd Apparently. Even I didn't noticed that, but then I never did use After Dark products so I didn't realize this at all!
Christopher Sobieniak Get this, the dog's name is Berkeley.
PollyGlodd Pfft, because I guess they couldn't think of any other way to shove it down our throats!
ToxicNeonPanda Down here it aired on "Fox Family Channel" I think.
Omg!!! I used to play these games! I forgot about them! This is why I love you...
I played this as a kid on my uncle's computer. I actually remember this over the After Dark screensavers. When you did your video on the screensavers I got confused cause I thought it was a game. XD

I have an after dark officially licensed toaster necktie
I don't wear ties, but I'm super jealous.
I used to play this on my parent's first PC! The Lawn Mower game and Flying toaster were definitely the best ones on there. The trivia game was absolutely impossible for me when I was five.
Thank you for the reference to my favorite review-Lawn Mower. Perfection.
I thought you were supposed to play them After Dark.

I played the shit out of this game, I remember that on time I had an incredible run of hoola girl, no one at my home could beat my score, not even me.
2:27 And in my mind, I screamed, "Icy Tower!"
Man, we've got some real winners here. I will admit, that flying toaster game did actually look kind of fun.
Nice to see another new video! your channel is great
5:35 “Golf clap for effort” LOLOLOLOL. 😂 😂 😂
I was hoping you'd make a video about this, since you talked about the screensaver. After dark games was actually the first game I had on my computer
Huh? They had collectibles, apparel, a TV show, and then came the After Dark Games? Where was I? I only remember its classic screen savers. :O
I remember I was about 4 years old when I played this on a Windows Millennium computer. I also used to enjoy another game called Wild Wheels and Rollercoaster Factory 3 which were absolutely wonderful games. This was a great video as always.
