This disc was one of the first I bought for my PS3 last year and it's got unbelievable value, especially if you had a Genesis growing up. Having Sonic 1 - Sonic & Knuckles. Arcade Shinobi, Space Harrier, Fantasy Zone. All these great great sega games I grew up with. A real gem. I loved my genesis and this almost makes up for no longer having it anymore.
This is a great collection of many Sega games from the genesis era. Now you can buy this game brand new for only $19.95 US at many online or retail stores! Trust me this game is worth every penny and then some. This is just one awesome collection.
I wish more folks would review like you do! You literally filmed how this game begins, and even go through the list of dozens of games it offers. Really encourages skeptical buyers like myself, to purchase and try it. I've always gone bonkers over playing classic games particularly since my brother and I have fun with the co-op mode lol...and the quirky humor in the games.
Man, we never would have known back then that 40 Genesis games could have been had on a single disc! This is an outstanding value in my opinion, especially since it can be had brand new for under $20.
I have this collection of games for my PS3. Ah memories. I grew up with this Genesis collection for PS3. One of the best PS3 games I ever bought. Got it for $30.
I can't say which was better, Genesis or SNES. What I can say is that "Out Of This World" looked & sounded way better on the SNES. Having said that, "The Lion King" probably looked & sounded better on the Genesis. Both consoles were very good for the time they were popular. I really don't see too much difference in either console. Both were 16 bit. Both released some of the same games as well as had exclusives. Being that you are apparently a SEGA Genesis worshiper, feel free to tell me why you think it's the greatest game console of all time. And also why you believe it's way better than the SNES.
I've noticed while mark was doing this review that he sounded kind of sad because Sega is no longer on the hardware market, I can tell by the sound of his voice..
John Smith Nintendo isnt going down. a few weeks ago there was a news article on a website stating that "Nintendo has 5 Billion Dollars in Bank and no debt" or something like that. and since Super Mario 3D World launched, Wii U sales have gone up by alot so i dont think nintendo is close to done making consoles.
Awesometron99 I dont like Nintendo, they are selfish and greedy BUT the WII-U is doomed NOW thats for sure. I actually found an article that said N had 10 Billion in the bank 2012 from N4G "Nintendo Reportedly Has 812.8 Billion Yen In The Bank" thats twice as much! But as I said I dont like N.
John Smith the Wii U isnt actually doomed you know. since Super Mario 3D World sales have gone up and last month Wii U sold 250,000 units. and once mario kart 8, donkey kong, and super smash bros are released the sales for the system will only go up more.
Awesometron99 Why people even liked the WII-U is beyond my understanding when theres the much superior PS4 ??? A few titles here and there is not gonna save it. But its a FACT that WII-U is doing badly. Just search on: "wii u doing badly" and you can see for yourself.
I never seen the Arcade version of Altered Beast. Everything looks so much cleaner. Except I hate the voice, it's clearer, but "Welcome to your doom" doesn't sound as sinister as it did on the Genesis version.
Definitely one of best gaming compilations out there, I hope Sega do another collection like this in the future with Mega Drive, Saturn, & Dreamcast games all in one. If Rare can fit 30 games onto one disc with 'Rare Replay', Sega can do the same thing with their games...
I only had a genesis as a kid... well... we did have a 2600 and an nes .. but me and my brother had to sell our NES to get our model 1 genesis... me and my brother found a sweet deal at a pawn shop in missouri when I was 8 ... Im 30 years old now but I always remember the genesis being my favorite.. kid chameleon , road rash 2 & 3 , toe jam and earl , TRUXTON , and phantasy star were some of my favorites... People in general should love the genesis because of streets of rage music.. the opening music to stage 1 in streets of rage on genesis is fucking fantastic.. #BRINGBACKTHEGENESIS #GENESIS2K16
So true that music in Rage is dope me and my 2 older S brothers are all musicians and do some dj work and mixing and took the music from it and messed around with it.But a lot of people had that same idea and have done some amazing remixes over the years. Also I love Phantasy Star 1,23 and 4 but 3 is my fave even though most hate the game
for $15 i bought this game instantly i love my sega genesis and i was surprised by all the games that were on this that I remember and loved as a child
In December last year, shortly after Christmas, I got some money from my grandpa and I decided to get some PSN points to download Sonic CD. I went to the defunct local GameStop and I found this game. I got it for three reasons: 1) 20 Euros for a compilation of over 40 games is a fair price. 2) I never played Genesis games besides in an emulator. and 3) You'll never understand how rare is to find good gaming compilations in Portugal. Right now I love playing almost every game I played so far.
Nintendo could fit every game they ever made, up until the Gamecube, onto a single blu-ray. I wish our IP laws could make that possible, but so far all you can do is either pirate them, or only play the few Nintendo's released digitally at $10 a pop:(

@@dannzalbjorklund and also sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles are on there as well granted you cant do the lock on to sonic 3 technique but regardless of that there still on this compilation
This looks totally aweseome. I like the fact that each game has their own border. Reminds me of Super GameBoy cartridge, where if you put in certain GameBoy cartridge that has Super GameBoy logo on it, the border would load up.
I have this disc for my PS3. The only complaint that I had with Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection was that Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Knuckles in Sonic 2, and Blue Sphere were never included on the disc.
Dustin Nunn That's one thing i don't understand. Sega said that Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were suppose to one game. So why the hell don't they just put them together instead of separate? Heck, even Sonic Classic Collection on the DS and Mega Collection Plus on the Xbox, PS2 had that as an unlockable.
If you're still interested It's because they needed different ways to emulate Blue Sphere, knuckles in sonic 2 and 3 too and if they wanted to do that they'd have to drop several other titles or they wouldn't catch their deadline
Anyone who grew up as a gamer in the 90's should make this a mandatory purchase as its such a amazing collection, to be able to have a copy of Kid Chameleon so easily accessable is worth the price alone for me.
The names of the characters are different, There's a gay guy named ash on the first level that's a mini boss and if you translate some words during cutscenes then there are cuss words.
Streets of Rage 3 is harder, they changed the colors of the characters outfits, they screwed up the story, they censored a lot of things like lines and enemies.
***** Probably because good people can't have violence or inappropriate stuff even when they want censored videos on youtube. You know what i will trade my USA version for a japanese version. Now that they are talking about censoring and removing the violence out of it.
SOR 1 & 2 music are 16 bit gold. SOR 3 music hurts my brain. It's too modern, sharp and lacks the original charm of the 1st and 2nd. I see what he was trying to do but it just didn't pan out well.
Having never owned a Genesis, a missed out on many of these great games. It's only recently, when I bought this compilation for the PS3 that I've finally been able to see what games my own console's (SNES) rival had.
I just got this today and it's an amazing collection. There are a few games I don't care for but I'd say about 95% of this collection is right up my alley. By the way, you can make the games fill the entire screen, all you have to do is stretch it in the options menu. Then again I only have a 32 inch tv so I don't know about bigger ones.
I really liked this game. Some choice of games puzzled me since i would not have chosen them but a lot of the ones that I expected like Altered Beast, Street of Rage series, Sonic Games, and Golden Axe series. I did like the videos since it helps me appreciate it . Just like you I started with the Atari 2600 and bought the Genesis in 1989 when it came out. I also have the games in cartridge form and it is nice to be able to play them at once without switching cartridges.
This video ends with the scream and Game Over music from Altered Beast! That was a nice touch as those sounds really hit a nastoligic nerve with me. I must've heard that ending screen a thousand times when I first got my Genny. And now I associate that experience with my love for the Sega Genesis!
Its called Sega Ultimate Megadrive Collection here in the UK. Also, you can make the games fill the whole screen, its on the options while you play a game.
I wish the Lock-on Sonic games was on the collection but this is a good deal. You can get it for like 10 bucks. Golden Axe, the Streets of Rage and Sonic Trilogies...Altered Beast, Shinobi! Man, great fucking games. Brings a tear to my eyes. I don't see Nintendo making a Mario Ultimate Nintendo Collection
I have this compilation for the PS3 (Also, have some of these games on Sega Genesis, too) because they're that GOOD!!!!! These games are the best ever and these are STILL awesome to this day.
I like the review but I have a question. I just recently got the street of rage 2 in the ps store and it has online co op, I'm just wondering if the sega collection had a patch to play online on the multiplayer games. Cause I gotta say it badass to play online on streets of rage 2.
It's not mentioned in the review, but there IS a way to make all the games in 16:9 widescreen with graphical smoothing. Press Select and go to Video Options and hit L1. You can even adjust the screen's exact size to perfectly fit your TV!
Man, I got this collection and played the Hell out of some Phantasy Star, but man! I forgot just how hard the old games were! Still, that's some serious gameplay in this thing! Get it people! It's worth it!
i just would like to say i would highly recommend this game to any sega gamer i love the streets of rage games shinning force vectorman kid chameleon omg and the fact that u can save your data anytime helps i call it a quick save my rating for this would be an 8 out of 10 great collection it's missing knights of the round though i wish it was on here oh and i love the fact that on the arcade versions u can do infinite continues thanks dude for telling me about this game from one of your fans.
Love your reviews, I was wondering do the games on the disc give you the ability to save your progress and return to last save point later on? I have in the past purchased a game compilation like this for Sonic however it would not let me save anything and anytime I want to play I would have to start all over again, could you please let me know before I purchase this title. Thanks a lot, again love your reviews always very entertaining and funny.
And now, 12 years later on from 2009, I'm back at the same place I left, with the same days I had off back then, now. Talk about life going full circle. I will say this however. Its only a supermarket where I work, but its consistent. No surprises with my pay each month. The work isint demanding. Easiest job I've ever had. Between 2009 to present day of typing this message, I've met loads of people from all walks of life, worked easily 20+ jobs, And at 30 years old, I'm glad to be in a safe and secure job. I'm just balding now and gain loads of flab from 2009. Time to flip the switch and reverse everything. Almost like picking up where I left of, 12 years ago .... damn!
This game if you are an old school fan, like me is worth every penny! the main reason i got it is mostly for the streets of rage series best beat em up ever!
I wanted to love this collection but the lack of the lock-on feature really made it hard to love this collection. I mean the lack of lock-on for Sonic 2 was bad enough, but not having the lock-on for Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles is unforgivable. Did they forget that Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles were originally supposed to be one game?
Sega Genesis classics on one disc. What more could you ask for. Space Harrier and Fantasy Zone are my favorite games on this collection. They are unlockable arcade titles.
For those that are complaining about games like "Michael Jackson's Moonwalker," & "Revenge Of Shinobi," let's keep in mind that there are copyright/licensing issues involved (such as Revenge of Shinobi, thanks to boss characters looking like Spider-Man, etc.) This compilation is for 1st party games only, you know, the ones that Sega made themselves, not 3rd party games. If Sega wanted those games in there, they would have to pay companies a assload of money to have them inside this compilation.
This man gave such an PROFESSIONAL Review!!! He should be working for a major Video Game Company. I've seen his other reviews and they were great as well. I see VP, CMO, or CEO in this guy's future!!!
So, do you suppose. Being a gamer that started in 89 as well. That it is Sega Genesis blastphomy. Playing those games with the Xbox 360 Joystick and using the added save features for the Xbox 360. :)
@rtsdee The European version does not have Sonic in the title (or on the cover, except for this tiny screenshot). The disc is called "Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection"
Some games I'd REALLY like to be included. (DLC or Collection #2): - Shadow Dancer (obviously) - Revenge of the Shinobi - Strider - Moonwalker - Toe Jam & Earl - Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix (I now it's not genesis, but it's Sonic)
@emadrabah It's to specify how much you like each game, you can attribute them 1 to 5 dots and sort them by preference (5 dots first, then 4, then 3 etc.)
Genesis was my very first system as a boy. I still remember playing sonic the hedgehog 2, altered beast, and ghost n' goblins with my dad. I was only about 3 or so but those games have stuck with me even to this day so when I saw this game at best buy for $20 2 years ago I knew it was an instant buy. Looking back on it I now think I can understand why blue is my favorite color....SEG-A!!!!
Mark, you probably know by now lol, But there is a way to fill the screen ! Just hit select or start and go to the video settings in game and select 16:9 ratio and turn smoothing on for an awesome HD experience !
I really wish Konami would have stepped on board with Rocket Knight Adventures and Castlevania Bloodlines, and I really wish we could've gotten S3&K (MUCH better than the two separate games), but this is still an absolutely superb, must-own collection.
This disc was one of the first I bought for my PS3 last year and it's got unbelievable value, especially if you had a Genesis growing up. Having Sonic 1 - Sonic & Knuckles. RUclips is recommending your videos again. Nature is healing.
I used to watch this guy all the time back in highschool 😭
The theme song of this collection is the best song ever.
the perfect game for someone like me who considers their Sega Genesis a new family heirloom!
im actually drooling... 2 c this many cool titles on 1 disc is amazing!!!
I cannot understand how you like the music of streets of rage 3. Streets of rage 2's music was soooooooo much better.

@MrPooperscoop54321 you can adjust it perfectly for a widescreen in the options menu. I have a 55 inch plasma and it looks amazing in full screen
But then you change the original aspect ratio, stretching the screen.
crazy to stumble upon a legend's old footprints.
Such a wicked awesome collection, great way to introduce friends, family, and pets to THE MIGHTY GENESIS
I know it's unlikely because the Virtual Console exists, but am I the only person who would like to see Nintendo put out something like this someday?
No your not the only one =P

I don't see Nintendo making a Mario Ultimate Nintendo Collection
I think it's kinda ironic that they were able to include "Dynamite Headdy" in the compilation and not "Gunstar Heroes" as well. :P
CONGO BONGO!?!?!?!?! WOWZERS! I'm buying this FOR SURE NOW! All the game selections are awesome enough but Congo Bongo is epic nostalgia!
They should have formatted in a way where you could play the games in full screen without stretching them. But I think that takes time to do.
Talon Diwisch
You can play full screen with some games on Xbox 360 but they look like shit on my 50" Vizio.
I'm just talking these Genesis games. That's what they've done with Sonic 1, 2, CD and Adventure 2 recently.
This is worth every penny.
I have this compilation for the PS3 (Also, have some of these games on Sega Genesis, too) because they're that GOOD!!!!! These games are the best ever and these are STILL awesome to this day.

I'll have to buy this collection. :)
I just picked up this gem today. thanks for the review!!!
excellent collection
YUSH! nothing beats the classics X3
no. the Turbografx CD was the first console to offer CD playback.
so you can backup classic games and play them on original hardware? that`s cool.
I remember watching this on the day I left one of my old jobs back in 2009. Good times !
And I re watched this video the day I start my new job!
And the same day I quit that job ... until my next job
I love your review intro music so epic
Brings back memories I had this sniff
I wanted to love this collection but the lack of the lock-on feature really made it hard to love this collection. I mean the lack of lock-on for Sonic 2 was bad enough, but not having the lock-on for Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles is unforgivable. Did they forget that Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles were originally supposed to be one game?
Sega Genesis classics on one disc. What more could you ask for.
Space Harrier and Fantasy Zone are my favorite games on this collection.
They are unlockable arcade titles.
Not trying to be rude but these games are the reason we all have the games we have now.
I couldn't agree more with your review. This is without a doubt a fantastic value for the money.
For those that are complaining about games like "Michael Jackson's Moonwalker," & "Revenge Of Shinobi," let's keep in mind that there are copyright/licensing issues involved (such as Revenge of Shinobi, thanks to boss characters looking like Spider-Man, etc.)
This compilation is for 1st party games only, you know, the ones that Sega made themselves, not 3rd party games.
Very nice! I don't own either console this is for, but if I did, I would definitely consider getting this.
this collection is awesome! i have it myself
@rtsdee
The European version does not have Sonic in the title (or on the cover, except for this tiny screenshot). The disc is called "Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection"
Some games I'd REALLY like to be included. (DLC or Collection #2):
- Shadow Dancer (obviously)
- Revenge of the Shinobi
- Strider
- Moonwalker
- Toe Jam & Earl
- Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix (I now it's not genesis, but it's Sonic)
If it had Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier and the Thunder Force games I would totally buy this.
Very nice review. I definitely plan on picking this game up some day soon!
this game is a must have for all Sega Genesis fans
Sonics Ultimate Genisis Collection more like how cool we used to be
I really wish Konami would have stepped on board with Rocket Knight Adventures and Castlevania Bloodlines, and I really wish we could've gotten S3&K (MUCH better than the two separate games), but this is still an absolutely superb, must-own collection.
Shadow Dancer- The Secret of Shinobi; is on the the psp version for the Sega ultimate collection! :) (..I own both the psp, and xbox 360 versions)
Just the fact that this game contains anything Alex Kidd related makes me want it
Yep, the Genesis was the first I bought for myself too, amazing system.
