As my friend, who is a very good piano player, says “you can’t learn what JLL does...God has to give it to you and he got more than his share of talent on the piano.” His right hand and left hand are simultaneously playing different rhythms when he’s playing. Great job, Fil.

I met Jerry Lee so many times. The history behind his fame is so cool.
My brother introduced me to a friend of his at a bar called September Place in Memphis. This guys name was Carl McVoy.
He was the owner of the HI record label in the 50's n 60's. So we started hanging out. And one night we were sitting at his table when a knock came at the door. It was Jerry Lee. What a freaking character. Cocaine was his drug of choice in those days and he was a live wire.
On one of those hangout nights he came over again. Now Carl had a sunken livingroom and a powder blue baby grand in there. And on the other side of the kitchen were huge batwing doors. On the other side of those doors a hallway of glass that went thru the house. And there was a snow white baby grand in there.
They pushed the white baby grand out thru the bat wings almost to the steps of the living room.
And Jerry Lee sat at the blue piano and Carl at the white one.
I have never in my life been more entertained in my entire life.
They were hilarious! But I realized then that Carl was the lead. And so I asked who taught who?
Carl was the oldest of the cousins. And he learned at church how to play piano. And he taught Jerry, Mickey, and Jimmy all how to play and all three of them became stars in different ways.
    Jerry was Rockabilly.
    Mickey Gilley was pure country.
Jimmy Swaggart was a popular preacher.
Carl stepped out of music and into construction. His company built the New Mississippi River bridge and more around the region.
Carl had a recording studio in his home. I saw moma/mother records for the 1st time in my life.
Charlie Rich, Bill Black Combo, an Elvis record. Carl Perkins. I was so in awe.
I met Mickey once at his bar in Texas. It was a pretty slow night and he was at the bar. And I told him I had met 2 of his cousins and he laughed. Hes a really nice guy too. Jerry Lee loved being sandpaper lol.
I saw him in 2 concerts. The famous one where the IRS showed up to take the money for. But Jerry had already given his share back to the venue as a donation. That was so funny and cool to be witness to a little piece of history.
Have you ever looked at Charlie Rich? He was a friend of mine and just a beautiful soul. His wife was his wordman for man of his hits.
    A very nice man.

In my 18 -20+ years old I spent a lot of time at the old Blues Alley and they loved when I would show up. My favorite was Ma Rainey II. She even called me up on stage one crowded night to sing with her since I sang along with all of her songs while dancing in my cramped seat. Carl Perkins told the story of the first time he kicked the seat back. When Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Roy Orbison were doing Sun package shows... Lewis was getting jealous. He said to Johnny and Carl that they had guitars and can jump around and he was stuck on a seat. Johnny and Carl jokingly said "Get up, jump, do something!" Lewis took it into consideration. The next show, he jumped up, the seat got caught on his loafer and flung back and when he turned back, they said his long curly hair flopped forward. The crowd went wild. Carl looked at Johnny and said "I think we just made a mistake..."

I think that’s truly what this did at the time, it truly helped him to start realizing his own talents and quit being his own biggest doubter. There was no jealousy and that was said jokingly because they were all so different and Johnny Cash still sold more records than the Beatles! It’s unbelievable how Capitol Records did Johnny Cash, it was down right just horrible!!!!!!! I love how the amazing and tremendously talented producer Rick Rubin actually went into Capitol Records and reminded them that Johnny Cash was the artist that build their buildings, make them rich....etc!!! I guess what I’m saying is bands like Led Zeppelin, and even some other huge artist over the years even a few artists today do so much better when they’re independent artists!!!!!! Look at what Taylor Swift went through, so artists need to think if they’re truly willing to give up 60 percent of their life’s work or not. I have to take issue when you said , "This performance would be tame by today's standards". I think not... There is no one around today that could match Jerry Lee in that kind of wild, insane, uninhibited, performance from 1957 through 1964 when he was at his peak. If he were to perform like that today, I think there is no artist that can match his skills with an audience. Jerry Lee Lewis and his pumping piano is the master performer and showman and having seen him live several times when he was at his best in the fifties an sixties, I can tell you, he would still electrify the audience with his raw talent today, like no other artist can. Jerry Lee does not need props like pyrotechnics going off because he is living dynamite.

Fil-Another good one! I grew up in Memphis in the 1960s and 70s, and I knew Jerry Lee personally, and saw him perform live many times. He was/is, without question, THE most exciting live performer I've ever seen. This performance was very typical of his shows between about 1958-1965. And everything you say here is true- My father was a WW2 vet and very much a member of 'the greatest generation', and was quite dismissive of Jerry Lee. This is a direct quote from my dad: "He's the one that sings that (n-word) song about humpin'. I don't want you going to that. " Of course, I did anyway, LOL. Even Elvis knew-he would not allow Jerry Lee to be booked on the same bill with him. He (Elvis) knew he couldn't follow Jerry Lee when he was at his peak. And that was the problem-increasingly as time went on, Jerry Lee's performances didn't live up to his peak. He struggled with alcohol and drugs and frequently showed up intoxicated the night of a performance. He pulled stunts that got him blackballed by many local(Memphis) promoters and national booking agencies. It makes you wonder what might have been. But, then again, perhaps that level of excitement/energy simply couldn't be maintained-perhaps some form of escape was inevitable. Great work- Keep it up!

I always loved how Jerry Lee would insert his name in songs live in lieu of "I" or "me" in the studio versions. A classic example is You Win Again live in LA vs the studio ver. "when everybody knows but me" vs. "When everybody in old Memphis knows but Jerry Lee". Love it. Also when you see the photo of the "Million Dollar Quartet" it's the newspaper photo. The uncropped photo shows Elvis' girlfriend sitting on the piano!

A wonderful Jerry Lee segment to focus on, Fil, thank you. I remember seeing this program in its entirety on late night TV sometime in the mid 1970's. Jerry Lee's performance is magnetic! You just can't look away! I find it fascinating that, during the breaks when he's not playing, his performance shares a strong similarity to a Southern Gospel preacher who has his parishioners rapt attention. This is Rock'n' Roll rebellion as a religious experience, something Little Richard also excelled at.

Fil...What is unfortunate about Jerry Lee Lewis is that his ground breaking talent is sometimes eclipsed by his marrying his cousin. He was much much much more than that. He paid a price for that matter. But if music fans can see him as a musician he was spell binding. I saw him with my parents on a country music bill in the early 70's and he still was knocking over piano benches during his show and throwing his bench. He hopped around and it was captivating as a performance. He was charismatic even in the early 1970's. Decades later I never forgot how Jerry ignited the crowd and how he made me excited to be part of the crowd hearing his music.

A friend of mine was at the infamous gig Jerry Lee Lewis and Gene Vincent did at Birmingham Town Hall in 1963. Also on the bill was Mickie Most - who later became a record producer - and also Heinz from the Tornados at his first solo gig post leaving the Tornados. Well basically the difference in performance and energy between the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis and Gene Vincent VS Heinz was stark and he was literally booed off the stage. He did claim later people had thrown beans at him but my friend didn't recall that. The point was though the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis and Gene Vincent, despite being on the cusp of a big music change in 1963/64, were performers who literally created an energy on stage that transferred into the audience. I wish I'd been at that show. I do however have the ticket stub and the story!

I was a junior in HS in '64 and I grew up and began to appreciate music during this era. While I was a fan, I never delved into the stars lives other than the publicity they got, mostly bad, as I was caught up in the passion and the energy of this "vile" new music. It's fascinating to me hearing someone your age talking about the great music and amazing talents that emerged in this new, very controversial, genre. The funny thing is, I was just dancing and partying and doin a lot of shakin and not really thinking much about what it all meant in the larger scheme of things, and now hearing you analyze it alongside the historical aspects is utterly fascinating to me and I'm beginning to appreciate Jerry Lee, Hendrix, the Righteous Brothers in an entirely new way.
