Sorry for the late response Mike! Thanks for watching man. Glad to hear my videos are helping you out 👊 Let me know if there's anything you'd like to see in a video in the future.
Awesome video bro keep up the great work, great way to break down this transition sound design, this was an fire 🔥 video well that means I got a lot to learn, I have watched this video 3x times and learned something new each time. Great video keep up the great work God Bless
Thanks so much!! 🙏🏼 Did they send me the ‘rushes’? Did you mean clips? So I was asked to create a product trailer for the plug-in pack for mTransition Noise. I used stock footage from Artgrid and FilmPac that I thought would fit the type of transitions that are in the pack (basically I thought about who would buy this transition pack and what they would be filming) and then I found which clips would flow the best together and added the pack’s transitions. Then from there once I have the vibe of the shot and transition, I work on the sound design. And of course, send some drafts so I can make corrections if there’s something they don’t like. So from scratch! But obviously I’m not shooting those shots.
Freaktastic tutorial! Do you got a list of your favorite SFX sounds you use all the time with a link to purchase? Would help beginners enormously as there is such an overhelming selection to choose from :(
Thank you so much! I do not unfortunately :/ My advice to you is to download some free sound effects on RUclips, maybe pick up a sound effect pack from Horizons (I think it's called), and Evince. Those last two are pretty cheap and solid and the first one is free. The other alternative is to get an Artlist membership and use the SFX on there. If you do go that route, I'd really appreciate it if you'd go through my link! 👊
@@dylanjohndickerson Thank you for your reply, much appreciated. I already have an artlist account but it's quite overhelming for a newbie to go through if you really don't know what to look for. Sounds weird I know but I really need to figure out when to use a Whoosh, Riser, Strike and all the other terms lol (I am not a native english speaker). That's when I thought some kind of basic SFX pack to get you started would be cool. I will have a look at the two you mentioned. I need more stuff laters and will go through your links and make sure to sign up with them :) Have a merry christmas and a happy new year 🎉🥂

Another extremely "inspirational" video Dylan! And I say "inspirational" because I think my biggest takeaway from this video is that mixing sound effects is more an art than science. I've literally made a note to refer back to this video and search for the sound effects based on their names for my next project. But I'm assuming it took months (if not years) to have a sense of the "type" of effect that would go well with a visual?
Thanks a ton, Jeff! You're right. It's absolutely an art. I've found it really creatively fulfilling to play around with different sounds to see if they work. And no, I wouldn't say so! So long as there's some type of noise that's matched up at the right time with the flash or the wipe or whatever transition you're using, it'll usually work. Our minds expect to hear something when we see it, so by putting a sound effect at the exact time that the visual happens, it helps everything to flow and it doesn't necessarily have to be a sound that matches up perfectly.
Haha thank you so much, Dennis 🙏 That means a lot. Ya definitely! Have you watched my in depth sound design tutorial by chance? I don't go over mixing with dialogue but I go over mixing sfx adjusting levels ruclips.net/video/CgMaU5QmpNc/видео.html Try this one if you find your voice audio clashes with your music: ruclips.net/video/dp6Uv0rphPg/видео.html
Hey Pierce! Typically I try and start them off at the level, but sometimes I just get lazy or forget 😅 When that happens and when I layer my SFX a bunch, my levels peak. So what I do there is just throw the entire project into a compound clip and add a limited on that compound clip. That way my audio isn’t going above 0dB on export
@@dylanjohndickerson So do you try to keep sound effects at a certain dB above or below music? Or let's say you had dialogue. Do you keep the sound effects at say -12dB and the dialogue at like -6dB?
@@PierceJPeterson That all depends. For example I'm working on a piece now where the music should trump the sound effects. But yes, in that last example, that's a good template. Then from there, you can raise those sound effects that you want to stand out a bit more. Also, I tend to have my voice audio at around -2 if it's not a super 'sound design intensive' video.
