I was blessed to see PHC recorded in 2004 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. It was Father's Day weekend. The show was recorded on my father's birthday - June 18. It was a special gift from my wife to see this show live. I miss PHC and Garrison Keillor on Saturday nights. Thank you Mr. Keillor for all of the stories and laughs.
Oh how I miss A Prarie Home Companion radio show! Met a beautiful lady at rape crisis meetings and we became good friends. She played piano and introduced me to this radio show. We'd sit and listen together often. Miss you so much, Cayce and truly hope you're doing well. ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
I remember vividly that wild "Day of the sleigh" as a child and the odd thing that no one talks about anymore is that 1 Holstein cow that was seen riding on the front of the sleigh. The Lendersons thought it might be one of their cows and the Swensons was sure it was one of their cows but a cow with a shocked face flying by at over 65 mph is kind of hard to identify when you are keeping your head low and out of danger. The really strange part was that later all of the cows were accounted for. Which means one of those Holstein cows went on a 65 mile per hour ride of its life, circling the town where it had only grazed peacefully up until that point. Never mind the saying "if walls could talk" I always wondered what that cow would have to say about it's "Day of the Sleigh" whole adventure.
We used to toboggan in a field at a Vermont Holstein dairy farm & together with the milkman’s five daughters 😮 we careened past many startled heifers but never once did a cow want a lift back to the barn 😂
@@caroleminke6116 And that sure enough proves that one Holstein cow, who took that wild circling and jumping snow sleigh joyride, somehow got the word out to all other Holstein cows that any sleigh rides are not to be trifled with. That also explains the obviously above normal amount of loud mooing that was heard from all the cows in Lake Wobegon area for at least 5 years after that day of the sleigh.
Lord have Mercy I’ve had the pleasure of listening to Mr Keillor for decades the bedtime stories you put on at 10pm and best of all he’s your passenger on a long drive keeping you company
Wow. Mention Garrison Keillor ONCE in a comment, and the next day RUclips presents this. A bit obvious, right? On the other hand, I loved listening to this on the radio while driving.
Brings memories of Sitting on my Grandma's farm house Floor by the woodstove in central wisconsin. When I was 5 years old listening to a giant am radio
Yep...came from San Francisco to Brainerd, Mn to visit with my best friend for a month. After spending a LONG time in the air because the landing gear wouldn't come down. When we reached the farm, all i wanted was a stiff drink! Went to store...clerk REFUSED to sell me anything with alcohol!! He figured out within minutes of our arrival who i was staying with. "Nope..Mr. blah blah don't allow NO ALCOHOL in his home!" I swore i would drink it on the side of the road, that Mr blah blah would NEVER KNOW! He responded " nope...cuz I'd know miss!" Couldnt argue with that.
The first episode I ever heard had something to do with the vicious persecution of squirrels. It was one of the nights when I was working late and looking for anything to listen to on the radio. I stumbled on Mr. Keillor's story about squirrels and I've loved him ever since!
Glad to have found the channel. This Companion was my companion every Sunday that I drove my little red Ford Pinto wagon from my little hometown to Atlanta for college. I timed my departure after a wonderful home cooked dinner so I could listen while the radio reception was clear. I had the chance to leave all of it behind and start a new life in California after graduation but the pull of my little hometown and the family there was too great. I ended up halfway between Atlanta and the farm. A compromise that has been a blessing in many unforeseen ways these past 30 years. Thanks for the memories.
Thank you so much. Dad was from Minnesota and we loved to listen to these stories on the radio. Growing up in the Lutheran church we always had a good laugh.
They used to replay Prairie Home Companion on Sat mornings on our local NPR. We would put our screaming infant daughter in her car seat and take off to do our weekly grocery shopping and listen to Garrison. Our daughter would immediately quiet down and start cooing. This was back in the 80’s.
Wonderful. I was not able to experience this as a radio broadcast because I’m n western Canada. However for years I had Stuart McLean on the CBC with his stories from the Vinyl Cafe. The warmth and poignancy is similar. Thanks for this.
Thank goodness for Public Radio! Living in the US north of Seattle I was able to enjoy Keillor and McLean! McLean's stories Dave Raises the Xmas Turkey and Dave Makes Snow are priceless!!
@@hurdygurdyguy1 pure gold. I particularly love some of the stories featuring Sam, such as French Kiss, and the one about the Neighbour Eugene and his Fig Tree.
He is/was a great monologist (although not the Mark Twain he aspired to be as a writer). I saw him live and his singing was so bad that it has taken me 30 years to listen to his voice, again....still, a great story teller.
"what do you mean, he's just copying your tone - our saviour, the good Samaritan who loves his poor, crippled wife too, even though she's crippled." "We know what your tone means!"
I can not hear it , My computer has been made too low for me by someone else. I need to purchase new computer that no one can hack on me. But we hear radios just fine.
I don't know the answer, but maybe they could see themselves as the characters, whether it be the citizens of Lake Wobegone or the people from the convention. Old stories are in every small town about when 'so and so' was X years old. People from outside that community may not understand the personalities or how much young people can change to become adults that they thought they knew well.
I’ve never known anyone who could speak so slowly about such mundane things and keep your interest from start to finish.
That’s a true storyteller! ❤❤❤
It's the fact that the stories are about ordinary life and it's also funny that make it Interesting
I’ve known many..relatives who told stories of other relatives and all had a point and a purpose…
True
Have you ever listened to The Vinyl Cafe? If you like this, you will probably enjoy that as well.

Keillor painted a picture when he talked. My dad remembered that Roosevelt was the master of communication!
I Laughed And Laughed about the parents being tired of being parents & saying What kind of milk cartons ??
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for listening!

Thank you for mentioning him! Do you think that you might remember to mention him again on Saturday evenings about 8:00? Thanks!
I love listening to these in autumn and winter sets in here in Devon, England. Always remind me Christmas is coming.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! And for listening!
I think his stories are great. It's just always funny how he can tell you about basically nothing, and keep everybody entertained.

Another Garrison Keillor Classic! Thanks for sharing ❤
My pleasure! Thanks for listening!

We don't sell alcohol in stores here. Only in liquor stores.

Saw Garrison Keillor and Chet Atkins on their Sweet Corn tour in the '90's... terrific matchup!
This was very amusing. Reminds me of Wayward, WI.
Thanks for listening!
Had the opportunity to see Garrison Keillor perform at the Bob Carr theater in Orlando November 24th 2008
I always remember these stories on radio in New Zealand. Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility is memorable

Just loved it a tall tale that was well written
Well expressed! Thanks!

A National Treasure.
Revived to restore us. Blessings.

I have the "Winter" cassette from the News from Lake Wobegon and this doesn't appear on it. Where is this really from?
There might have been more than one winter?

Thanks for listening!

Have someone look at it for you.
These work on .75 speed too
I will never understand why the audiences of this program laugh inappropriately so very often
Meh!
Inappropriately? When?
Another version on RUclips, with no audience. Just GK's wonderful voice.
