I dig both albums. I think EVH had similar styles of production and playing and love the Steinberger on 5150. I dig sappy AOR ballads too lol. Total respect though, I get it. I think the setlists also alienated Dave fans. It was stupid to only play 2 or 3 Dave songs live during the whole Sammy era. Even the Cherone era had killer set lists. I love 5150 and Live Without a Net but it was like they were trying to be a different band with the same name

Dave era Van Halen IS Van Halen....I prefer it 10-1 over Van Hagar....that said, there ARE a great song or two on EVERY Van Hagar album...but there are more songs that suck on them than great ones. I really don't like Sammy as a person, but he DOES have a helluva voice, and I liked his pre-Halen solo stuff, and SOME of Van Hagar stuff. I just could never come to terms with the fact that Eddie let his band go from the "Ultimate Party Band" to the "Soft Assed Ballad Band". I bought every Van Hagar CD, but only really listened to 2-3 songs on each....I owned all Classic Van Halen tapes and literally wore out 3-4 cassettes of each from non-stop playing them (until I got them on CD), and Classic Van Halen is still on my playlist today....Van Hagar I can occasionally bop to on the radio...but not play list worthy. The surprising fact TODAY is that at 72 Sammy STILL has a good voice...where Dave at 65, no longer wishes to sing, and would rather dance with scarves, rub his ass and grin ear to ear like a retarded chimpanzee.

Everything was wrong. Hagars hair, the way he moved, nothing fit. I think Eddie always knew it wasn't right. And he never fully got over it.

Hagar was so highly thought of by the Van Halen brothers that he was the 4th choice. All-Star Album, Patty Smith, Steve Perry then Hagar.

5150 was a knife in the gut. Everything was wrong. Hagars hair, the way he moved, nothing fit. I think Eddie always knew it wasn't right. And he never fully got over it.
