Amen 🙏🏽 you saved me $158. I asked the dealership about my fire not locking. They said i might need to reset my car. I heard a man laugh in the background. I was like let me check with my warranty people before i schedule a service for my car. I knew I needed to check the manual. Then I realized the car was telling me for a while to replace the battery on my remote. To think I was about to get rid of this car. It keeps telling what’s wrong so I can fix it.
Other videos said "use the key to pry with". Never happen on this style fob but yours was perfect showing how to use a thin blade in the right spot. Thanks!
Thank you for uploading this. My 79 year old father called me to say his "car remote" wasn't working. I sent him this video and he installed a new battery with no issues.
Thank you so much!!!! Saw another video that said I might have to cut/pry the key case apart, replace battery and then glue back together. So happy I found yours... Relieved a lot of anxiety for me. Great video!
perfect instructions and to the point - saved me the nightmare of going to the dealership to replace the smart key fob at a fraction of the price (battery only). My key was slightly different, but the video gave a good general idea on how to tackle it. Thanks a lot!
Awesome! I had tried everything to get that thing open and was just about ready to bring out the 5-pound hammer. I have the exact same one in your video.
Probably because not all BMW keys are like this. Mine has no opening panel and also a non-replaceable battery - battery is soldered in to its holder....
Mine is a 2010 and the fob looks exactly like yours, but I don't have any type of opening at all there where you slipped in the screwdriver--nothing: it's all one solid piece there. I do have smaller slits on both of the outer sides. I may try to wedge it open there. Any suggestions? TIA
Just a tip for others, mine had no tabs to snap apart, it was glued! And once separated it needs re-glued to stay together! Battery isn't easily separated either, it's soldered in!
That's the non-comfort one and it's a PITA. Needs carefully cutting all around along the seam with a sharp blade. The you have to either buy the battery and spot weld it to the existing battery or desolder the battery holder and buy a battery that comes with the holder (fairly cheap so makes the most sense)
Isn't there another step to get it to work once you replace the battery to reprogram it? i replaced the battery but it still doesn't work :( someone on the BMW forum said you have to reprogram it but didn't provide the steps. Let me know if you know! thanks!
I just looked it up, yes. Just the remote unlock fails, so you have to use the manual key to unlock. These batteries are very cheap, so unless the car is brand new, replace them anyways (main key and the spare).
What is wrong with people who dislike this video.!!?? You watched it because you didn’t know how to do it right? It’s short and to the point..and then some people hit a thumbs down? What the hell, did you expect a sandwich with the video?
Calm your panties. Not all keys that look exactly like this have a removable compartment cover. The type with rechargeable battery are sealed shut. An instructional video without the fundamental info.
@@In-A.i.-We-Trust you have to break the super glue seal around it. But. Then you have to order the battery from like Amazon...they dont sell it in stores🤦♀️
Same with mine... managed to get the case open by running a Stanley knife around the edge and carefully prising open only to find the battery is soldered in!!!! Think next step is to buy a non OEM replacement and try to code it to my car!!! 🙄
There are 2 styles of key (I think it depends on the country). The other style is sealed and as Linda says, the whole case needs to be opened up. The battery is a rechargeable Panasonic and needs to be soldered in but it's not that hard. The case then needs to be glued back together. The battery is less than $15 and will last another 15 years.
Check the back of the battery you put in the fob. When you buy them from the store they come with a thin, plastic filament protector. Once you take off the filament it will work like a charm!
Note that these instructions are for cars WITH Comfort Access (CO). Cars without CO have rechargeable batteries which can NOT be replaced this way. Those require cutting open the fob and soldering. See this video for the rechargeable battery swap: ruclips.net/video/TM33hRBqzDI/видео.html
Just checked mine from a 1970 3251 convertible same fob ..but sealed ..opened with some persuasion but the battery although the same is fixed front and back to terminals ... looks to be a factory fix not soldered .. nothing ever simple with BMW ...turns out there are two types ... one that takes replacement batteries (split to open) another which is sealed for life with a rechargeable fixed battery ... yes I got it sealed again and it still works. The fob recharges when in the car so if you have a second fob stashed somewhere it pays to swop the fob in use every so often to keep it charged up
Just discovered that the key fob for my wife's 2007 BMW 3 series is a sealed unit. You are unable to pop open a cover to replace the battery. The dealership charges $330 for a replacement and the parts guy says these fobs typically last 5-7 years .What a racket!
Jim, BMW absolutely sucks. This is another example of the stupid way they design their cars. What a racket is right. I just got my 328ix back from the shop. They recommended $11,000 of repairs on a car that cost me $8,000 and runs fine now that the plugs and coils have been changed. And don't get me started on the stupid electronic oil monitoring with no dipstick. I swear, the reputation Germans have for engineering is way off. The overthink everything. I'm going back to Lexus. This is our second BMW, both had problems. Never buying another BMW.
The hardest part for me was getting the new battery out of the packaging. I tried to replace the battery while I was in my car after buying the battery from CVS but the plastic was too tough to open. You need scissors to cut into the plastic but who keeps a set of scissors in their car.

Perfect RUclips "how to" video. Short, directly to the point and enough detail for quick viewing and use...

Worked perfect for me. Exactly as shown.
Top tip! Instead of using a screwdriver you can use the key itself as it fits exactly into the gap for pushing the back off.
thanks!
Exactly! I was just about to make this comment - just use the key that you removed in step one!
Thanks! 👍
Another Top Tip: some older cars can be started with a screwdriver alone.

Use the key instead of a screwdriver. The slot is designed to take it. Push the key in until it clicks
I work at a battery shop....this one totally had us baffled...... thanks!
I modified my X5 35d with great success, but had to look up this video on how to change the key fob battery. :-)
Very useful vid and thank you 🙏
Thank you, Adam. Your video just saved me $215 Canadian dollar.
Came off just using my thumbnail. Thanks for making it short and tonthem point without music or any other nonsense.
Excellent video. To the point without all the bullshit fluff. Thank you!
Nice, short and direct to the point!
Awesome! I had tried everything to get that thing open and was just about ready to bring out the 5-pound hammer. I have the exact same one in your video.
Very helpful explanation. Took me less than a minute to change the battery. Thanks.
Thx u. I didn’t know there was a battery in there until I saw the warning light pop up this week.
Thank you. Just changed my battery and only took a few seconds.
I agree with Andy below ... short, direct and to the point ... thanks!
Fab. Brief and to the point . No endless drivel like some videos .
Great snappy video!! Quick and to the point. Why would anyone dislike this video!!
That's very helpful, thank you. I was phaffing around with mine for ages yesterday to no avail, so you have sorted me out!
Thankyou for such simple, straightforward instructions, but why have 274 people disliked this?

I found I have the non-comfort key. Fun times wedging it open and soldering the battery in. WTF bmw?
OMG thank uuuuuu! Perfect straight to the point video!!
This video helped me a lot!!! Also saved me money!
i thought it would be harder then this thanks adam for showing me how to do this now i can teach my family kissy face
I have the same keyfob, but you cannot remove the battery. What to do? Take to dealership? Thanks!
I have a 2006 3-series and the front of the key is identical to yours but the back is different. That back piece isn't there to remove.

Didn’t even know my car had keys thanks helped me alot
My 2006 key looks exactly the same but does not have the slot for a screwdriver/key, or the smaller plastic battery cover.
That's the non-comfort one and it's a PITA.

Amazing quick helpful video, thank you!
My key looks identical but it doesn’t have a hole where your screwdriver goes ,
Short and sweet, accurate, awesome. Thanks!
Thank you for this video. It was much appreciated and very useful. As stated - direct to the point information. It helped me considerably.
Helpful and short. Thank you
That was easy thank you very much for sharing
Isn't there data for your seats and radio, etc... saved on the key. Won't you loose all the data if your disconnect the battery?
Perfect Straight to the point

Hi Adam do you know if the BMW key blade can be repaired or replaced?

Can you start the car when the key battery is compleetly finshed?

I just looked it up, yes. Just the remote unlock fails, so you have to use the manual key to unlock. These batteries are very cheap, so unless the car is brand new, replace them anyways (main key and the spare).

this is only for keyless entry, majority of e9x owners dont have that
perfect vid, well done and do some more please!
Thanks. Good video
Thank you great tip. But my battery it's wellded
Does this require a visit to dealer for them for “reprogramming”
Does your TV remote need to be "reprogrammed" or "recalibrated" after you change out the batteries for fresh ones?
Martins 91267 I think he was being sarcastic...
This is perfect. Thank you!
Thank you, you made it easy!
Thank you for this reminder!!
but my own key dosent have where i can remove and put it again
I was able to wiggle it out using the key. Thanks!

I have 2009 3 series. There is nowhere on my fob to insert and twist the screwdriver. But you didn't show clearly where to insert the screwdriver.

You should have replaced the battery when you had it open. Cheap and fairly simple to replace with a basic soldering iron.
Mine has no gap for the screwdriver :/
Yours is the type with rechargeable battery which requires the whole case to be separated.
I thought the specification was for a CR2450 battery.
