Great video man! I remember when I started home assistant probably 4 or 5 years ago. There was no option you had to do it yaml . There was little to no UI. Now with the UI. It's so much easier. That being said, I've been using no red now for 3 years. Everyone's going to have their opinion about what's better. But I like node red for the visual aspect. Now with Home Assistant it does show a visual flow of things. But node red for me is just better. At least that's my opinion
100% HA recently updated the UI side making it even better, but there are some strong use cases for node red too. Yaml I love to do easy copy & paste and if feels geeky!
I switched to node-red years ago because latency between triggers and actions was lower. It's fractions of a second, but with HA there would be moment of unease such as with lights coming on as expected but going through Node-Red would feel as instant as if you flipped a wired switch to turn on a light.
I've done all three. I started with all my automations in Node-RED and then eventually converted all of them to YAML. I also did a few using the UI and then edited them for further functionality in YAML I started in Node-RED because I found the interface helpful, especially when starting out. As I gained familiarity and facility with YAML, I decided that it would be better in the long run to program all the automations (and scrips) in YAML. What would I recommend? For new users and non-programmers, either Node-RED or the (vastly improved from when I started with HA) UI. YAML still appears to provide the most complete control over all aspects, but it's got a learning curve to it. Fortunately, there are a lot of folks who are quite helpful both here on RUclips and in the Home Assistant Community.
Awesome! I use all 3. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses in terms of user friendly experience, but yaml is probably the most customizable for advanced users. Maybe?
HA UI. I can do the same in Node Red, but in the interest of reducing points of failure I prefer to keep everything under one hood as much as possible.

@@SmartHomeMakers Yes, with the Function node, I can do pretty much anything even as a noob. Easier to control as well because everything is in one place.

Thanks for the video. Just started using Home Assistant and I have found it to be a steep learning curve. Node Red is way beyond my skill set.
Thanks Arty! I think node red is quite intuitive once you get your head around it! What are you struggling the most with it ?
This is AWESOME and exactly what I wanted to see as a HA noob! Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it !

Great summary Russell!
This has got me inspired to learn node red
Nice one Julian!

Yaml is great if you have a deployment pipeline and useful for versioning your files!
@@SmartHomeMakers Node red has full support for git/versioning integrated into the UI with "Projects"feature which is still in preview, but works well
@@andrewloree2833 great to know!
Thanks, this is a very nice overview.
THanks Johann!!!

Makes sense! One more add on that might fail
What do you think about using node red as a failover?
Awesome!!!
Thanks Cody!
Hmm, I wish installing Node Red was as simple as shown in the video. My Node Red installation only says: 502: bad gateway
what hardware are you running ? VM?

HA UI < YAML < NODE RED.
So fully node red then for you?

Node Red👍
Nice one Jose!
The automations in HA have gotten so much more powerful and user friendly. I see no value in Node Red at this point.
What is your most complex automation?
UI automations to trigger python scripts!
Love them Lautaro! Did a video about using python scripts, really cool!
