Jon Scott Dude, you're a comedy challenged potato head which is not only why you didn't get the joke, yet you now say "that's what I thought it meant", which you didn't or you wouldn't have said you don't get it, and in fact you didn't get it, but also because you don't get the originality of this entire sketch. That joke was extremely clever and drop dead funny and only somebody who doesn't know the first thing about really great comedy writing wouldn't think so. And no, that is absolutely NOT a "rehashed joked" by American comics and comedy writers, who are some of the funniest and most original in the world. There's no such thing in great comedy as "about five general a jokes that American comedians rehash when talking about Germany", or any other topic. When it's in a totally new context, with new phrasing, written by great comedy writers and said by a comedic genius like Kate McKinnon with a unique, ,drop dead funny delivery, it's a new joke. Comics don't have to re invent the wheel every single time they tell a great joke. It's the concept and the way it's written and told that makes it funny.
Maybe buy a sense of humor. You can pick one up dirt cheap from any street vendor in NYC, because most people already have one, and those who don't, are too unfunny to know it.
Who goes to poetry slams.
McKinnon is a national treasure.

I'm in awe of Kate's talent, but as a German I'm sorry to say that this impression of Merkel is very poor. There are quite a few idiosyncrasies of Merkel's that lend themselves to parody but Kate didn't catch any of them, not even the "Merkelraute", Merkel's signature hand gesture forming a rhombus. (FYI: This is so recognizably Merkel that it was used on an election poster - just the hands in front of a blazer without her face.
I think these are things an American audience won't know. So for her main audience she did enough. But that is hilarious that her hand gesture forms a rhombus and that that's used in an election poster--I think you kinda proved Kate's parody a little! ;)

Kate McKinnon's impressions - Clinton, Merkel, Ginsberg, Sessions, etc. - work so well because she goes beyond the voices and mannerisms and crafts an actual character, based on the real person yet so over-the-top that it's essentially an original creation. You know that Angela Merkel isn't really a love-struck Obama fangirl, but with McKinnon at the helm you can *imagine* it. She's a grade-A character actor, not just a good impressionist.

mazze00 no, the axis joke is referring to the axis powers and allied powers from WW2. Germany, Japan, and Italy were apart of the axis powers, while the UK, France, Russia, China, and the United States were apart of the allied powers. So when she said, “No allies. It’s mostly axis these days.”, that’s what she’s talking about. Hopefully that helped and wasn’t too confusing of an explanation! :)

Axis was the alliance of the fascist countries (Germany, Italy, Japan) and the Allies was the Alliance of democratic countries (USA, France, Great Britain) and the USSR. The Axis joke was referring to the fascist movements going on all over Europe these days. Very clever and very original indeed
