  • We made it to episode 30! This week we start off by playing with the K&T mill. I then show some viewer mail from this past week, and last I show you a couple machining jobs I had to knock out. I had more stuff I wanted to share this week but not enough room in this video. We might have some short clips to post later.
    I hope you guys enjoy, and thanks to all the viewers for making this a successful series. I enjoy building the SNS videos for you, and being able to show a mix of subjects together.
    Best Regards,
    Adam

    Nice work as usual! I really like how varied the types of jobs you are able to do, and I hope your customers appreciate the quality and pride you give to each one of their projects. Sadly we used to never even have to mention stuff like that as it was a given with American manufacturing, but it is becoming more and more rare nowadays. If there isn't an "app" for it on their phone then it almost doesn't exist to the kids in today's "me" generation. I hope you can get through to more young people with your videos and emphasize your work ethic and the honor in fine craftsmanship, I really do!
    Thankfully this machinist's community really gives me hope. Everytime I see something like Colin's work, and his selflessness in giving you such a beautiful tool you guys remind me of how many good people there still are in this world. I can only hope to someday learn a tenth of the skills you all possess, and I'm really trying. I made a "Chips and Slips" video that won't seem to upload, and it showed my first turned piece, but it just would take. I will shoot another, I've got Tom's book "Doing it Better" on the way, and have even made an appointment to speak with the counselor at a college in Stockton to see if I can get into their Machinist's program around my busy schedule.Taking care of Pop is the most important thing right now, and the Cherry Juice you recommended is at least making him some refreshing drinks, has it done anything for your foot?
    I really enjoy everything you do, and want to thank you again for the entertainment as well as the inspiration. I hope you have a relaxing Sunday and a great coming week...Aloha, Chuck

      Good to hear from you Chuck. I'm glad to hear your taking an interest in learning machining. I wish more young people would do the same, but guys like Mike Rowe are helping to get the word out that people don't have to go to college for 4 years to learn a career. Learn a Skill, Master a Trade is his motto. I love it!
      The cherry juice seems to be helping, as I havnt had any pain for a while now, but only time will tell, and I need to stay on it daily.
      You'll like Tom's book. It's great! Lots of tips and tricks in there.
      Thanks Chuck!

    Another sweet episode Adam! congrats on #30. At first you were a bit shy but now you are a Rockstar..lol! Talking about all the overtime at work it's the same here. With all the rain we've had this year(in the southeast)though we just might as well work. Not enough long periods of decent weather to plan things. That stop Colin made for you is jam up. I could see those doing well on the market.

    You have a Natural Gift for teaching , supplying Information in a manner that makes it easily absorbed by others. In some ways I envy that gift but alas we all have gifts that are unique and important . Your channel has been a serious inspiration to me in ways that may seem totally absurd. I have never been very organized and ive never been good at establishing goals and seeing them through to the end. When i see your early vids as opposed to your more recent content the amount of growth i see is whats so inspiring. you come across as a Very Genuine person and that in itself is a rare quality these days. So if in the beginning you could have asked god to make your channel a success with x amout of subscribers what would that number be and im guessing you would have settled for much less than what you have. Keep it up and may you continue to grow and be Blessed.

    Hey Adam, nice 30th video, I like the modification to the wiper arm. it just goes to show that some things can be improved on. I made a door hinge pin for a guy at work for his 72 Chevy with a bearing and an o-ring to make the hinge work smoother. He said it works great, the only problem is he only wanted 1, I told him I would make one for both sides but he said no just 1 was all he needed, well guess what, now he wants 1 for the other side. So when in doubt make 2. Thanks for the videos
    Buddy

    Dear Adam
    Another great video, hard to believe it is number 30! Please keep up the great work.
    I love the Jacob's Super Chucks too. I have three, the largest being the 18N. Two of them were bought used and the the third was new, old stock. Two were made in the US and the other in England. All three are top quality products. However, in my most up-to-date tooling catalogue that carries Jacob's Chucks, they are listed as "imported" and I recall hearing someone else noting they are now made in China!!!!! So I would recommend that anyone looking for one be sure to note that it is a US or UK made specimen.and not an import as I know the quality will NOT be the same.
    Best regards.
    Paul

    • @Abom79
      @Abom79  10 лет назад +1

      Last Year a got a new 16N chuck at work with a 40 taper arbor, and I was surprised that the chuck was labeled as made in China. The chuck itself works fine, but I can tell the difference in the finish. The bad is that the chuck key doesn't work worth a flip! It's too loose in the hole and doesn't get a good bite on the gear. So I just keep using my older (5 years) 16N and chuck key. When I do use the new chuck, I use the old chuck key on it.
      The 18N has a much easier sized chuck key to use and you can bit down on it harder.
      It's sad to see the continuing decline of well known USA made tools and products actually made here, and being shipped in from China.

    A. Booth Pimp my ride! lol Colin fixed you up on a sweet looking stop. I am sure you will find that very handy for a lot of tasks especially for repeat setups. Congrats on SNS30 and even bigger congrats on the 1st cut with the K&T !! This week I was reading a book and it had an add from 1919 proclaiming the record cut on a horizontal mill. With 35hp cutting 55000psi steel they did 1/2"Doc x 5"wide with a 24"/min feed rate resulting in 900lbs of steel removal per hour!! I would hate to be the guy cleaning up after that job I would need a backhoe to pack off the chips!! lol It is amazing what some of these old mills could do!

    Hi Adam, its really nice to see the old girl back among the living. I told you the DRO worked, nice. The machine was actually made in England for K&T under contract. Oh, and by the sound of that cut I am guessing you need to increase the feed a bit. Usually you use the A support on the outside and the B support on the backside of the cutter, one on each side. That is a super ridgid setup!

    • @Abom79
      @Abom79  10 лет назад

      Never seen two supports being used before. I can tell you that small support "A" wasn't enough for those bigger cutters. I fixed up the style B today and tested with a big 3/4" cutter and it did much better. Well get it figured out man. I used to run these big milling cutters a lot but that was years ago now.
      Thanks James.

      Abom79 If you could find, or make, a bushing for that other B style support you can run a B on both sides as well. I like the B style bushings because you have some wiggle room in that the running bushing is wider.

    Great job on this weeks SNS Adam. Cant wait till you get the KT running properly and get some jobs loaded in there.
    You are quite welcome for the gift as I'm sure it will get used plenty and not likely to find a better home.

      Maybe, likely not.... I started checking some pricing on factory made units.....cheap is $99, good is $199. Hard to make a living making them in small quantities at those prices. I would have to shelve it until the shop had some dead time.

      It's got to be hard tom compete with those cheap import products and prices. You about gotta have a one off item that no one else sells to make it now. But even Brad is finding out it's not long before someone overseas will copy you.
      I think I prefer having only one of two of the CompEdgeX custom made mill stops!

    Hey Bud,
    Nice to see you bust out the TIG welder. For a minute there I thought you were going to use some 5/32 7018.
    Talk to you soon,

      Hey don't dare me! I love my stick welder. If it wasn't for the tig I might be oxy-fuel welding them small parts.
      Thanks Tom. Hope you have a good weekend.

      TIG is best for these small jobs, but if stick was all I had, you can bet I would have used it.

      Abom79 I know somebody who broke a tooth on a benchtop lathe change gear, I believe from a craftsman 109. He brought it to work and the guy who welded it up used a stick welder, and didn't touch the sides of either tooth next to the broken one. Now whats a steady hand! Those change gears are tiny! And it worked after recutting the tooth.

    Hey Adam,
    Congratulation of 30 editions of SNS! It's funny how you start something like that, thinking you will put up a few videos and before you know it there are 30 episodes in the can! It looks like you can put some pretty hungry cutters on the K & T. It will be great to get the power feed working. I know how it is to have something you want to use and not be able to use it. Great work on the wiper linkage! Keep cranking out the great SNS programs, buddy! Before you know it, you'll have 100!
    Have a good one!
    Dave

    It would be interesting, to put a dial indicator on the top of the arbor shaft and take a large cut in climb, just to see how much deflection there is.

    • @AttilaAsztalos
      @AttilaAsztalos 10 лет назад

      Exactly. I'm an absolute n00b if there ever was one in machining, but I was wondering "why is that not a climb cut - it's supposed to be superior, if you machine is rigid enough?!?"

    Great show!......nice fix on the wiper project! I was hoping you would have too much content, and need to start a Monday and Wednesday Night SpeciaL!......funny that you were talking about 18 & 20N chucks......was just looking around at them this week to buy.....the 20N's are pretty salty!....BTW....I've got an extra 50 Taper Lyndex chuck arbor with a JT4 if you can use it.....just let me know

    • @Abom79
      @Abom79  10 лет назад

      Jim, I wouldn't hurt to add that to my small but growing inventory of 50 taper milling arbors. Not sure if I have a chuck to fit it or not though. I just looked at my extra 18N chuck and I cant find a mount size listed on it.
      As for content, I was hoping to add another slideshow at the end but I already had way too much video for this one. It'll have to wait for another episode.
      Thanks Jim.

      I thought about that when I was editing the video. Apparently when I tighten the screws that hold the two handle halves together it makes the knocking sound worse. Might have to looses them back up now.

    Adam;
    Congrats on #30. I have to say I have learned a lot by watching you work on the various projects you have shown. Also, that was a nice tool that Colin made, it looks similar to the one that Tom Lipton did a couple of videos on.
    You mentioned you needed to figure out how to get the K&T set up so the larger bearing surface on the outboard end of the arbor could be used. When watching the video, at about 11:04 you went to a close up of that bearing surface while the cutter was in action and I thought I saw a wobble in the bearing surface (it looked like more than a few thou of run out as compared against the background). Is there a possibility the arbor may have a very slight bend in it? Would that explain the chatter you saw in the surface finish of the cut?
    Regards;
    Ron Kluwe

    • @Abom79
      @Abom79  10 лет назад

      Ron, I have been working on the larger outboard support today and getting it ready for use. Your right about the runout though. The 1" arbor does have a slight bend, so I may be looking for a new one to replace it.

    • @ronkluwe4875
      @ronkluwe4875 10 лет назад

      Any chance you can bend it back? Would this be the same as trying to take out the bend in a prop shaft?

    Adam, Congrats on SNS 30. Great video.
    Question.... how do you find center on the shaft on the K&T?

    • @Abom79
      @Abom79  10 лет назад

      There's a few different ways to do that, but on this one I used the cutter to find center by making small cuts untill I was cutting the full width of the cutter, and adjusting the Y axis until it was cutting evenly in the center. It was just for fun so I wasnt too concerned if I wasn't centered perfectly.
      Thanks Herb.

      Ben and Keith actually made a deal right before I made this video, so he now has an 18N coming his way. I already have two of them myself, so next one hopefully is a 20N.
