    Dropper posts can make a huge difference to your riding, but there are a few things to take into consideration before buying one. Neil tells you how to make sure you only buy the dropper post that will fit both you and your bike.
    Make sure you buy the correct diameter post for your bike
    Check whether the post is routed internally or externally
    Decide how much drop you want from your post.
    An important measurement to take before buying your post is the stack height. That is the measurement from the top of the seat post collar to the saddle rails. Then subtract about 50mm for the dropper post collar and the saddle clamp. This measurement is the maximum length of dropper you can run.
    Check the length you can insert the seat post into your frame before it hits an obstruction. For example, a bend in the tube, or the actual rear shock itself.
    Ensure the dropper post won't be further out from the frame than the minimum insertion mark.

    Spot on. Knowing the stack height and YOUR own actual saddle height relative to the collar is definitely the most important factors to consider when picking a dropper. Second its soooo important to know how deeply into the frame you can insert the post and then whether or not you can use internal routing to the remote. I used my old seat post slammed all the way in to find out how far I could insert my dropper before hitting an obstruction. Thanks Neil.

    Dropping in something other than a a seat tube of appropriate diameter can give you false measure of depth. One of my bikes, Trek Fuel EX has a seat tube curving after around 200 mm, than it has rear shock mount at around 240 mm. The ruler or tape or something thin will go way lower than both inside the frame, to at least 300mm, while actual seat tube won't go below 200mm. It is way better to put the seat tube as low as possible inside the frame, make a mark on seat tube, pull seat tube out and measure length from bottom of tube to that mark;)

    • @georgemorley1029
      @georgemorley1029 5 лет назад

      minusED Dude so true. 220mm max insertion on my seat tube and that’s from my current seat post

    • @acat6821
      @acat6821 4 года назад

      I got stung, i bought a 150mm post measured and it would fit perfect in my tube, little did i know there was a tiny lip 30mm from the suspension mount that stopped it. Luckily inwas able to machine down the end of the dropper s little do it would fit otherwide i wouldve had a dropper 30mm to high

    • @goodpools
      @goodpools 2 года назад

      Really? On my 2017 Trek Fuel EX 29er, the minimum insertion with a seat post is around 255mm, that’s on a size Large, 19.5” I think. However I’m not sure whether the cable actuation mechanism below the dropper can go even deeper, only 1 way to find out: but a 200mm dropper.

    • @goodpools
      @goodpools 2 года назад

      @@acat6821 that’s not a good idea!! The reason being is that having your seat post too deep inside the frame can intervene with suspension, especially when bottoming out. It can also put stress on the cable and tear it during a bottom out.

    • @minusED
      @minusED 2 года назад

      @@goodpools mine is M and 26”, most likely a 29” L has a different geometry. Plus they change it over the years so production year is also important. Anyway, what I was describing mostly is a relatively gentle curve of the rube, where thinner tubes would go deeper than the actual seat tube. The thinner - the lower it will get into the bend giving a false measurement.

    Watch out for Specialized frames. My Fuse came with a cable operated dropper but I wanted to fit a Rockshox post. The Specialized dropper had a 4mm cable and I ended up drilling out the 4mm hole in the frame to fit the 5mm hydraulic cable, a bit nerve wracking on a brand new frame.

    Hey Niel, I recently mounted an RFR Pro dropper post on my hartail Cube Reaction hybrid. now I have read that There is a maximum rider weight recommended for this dropper. I am not a light weight rider myself and my own weight is sitting against the max weight of the dropper, which makes it not so pleasant, I am afraid that I can damage the dropper if I ride on it. I was wondering why I don't see this in any of the dropper videos? Is this something I should take seriously or just an indication? I wonder how many people have had any problems with this.

    I just got the tranzX ysp19 27.2mm x 400mm external routed dropper with 100mm travel, but I have the issue that the dropper rises very slowly - as in more than 2 seconds. My friend also has the same one, but his dropper rises in less than 1 second. Any suggestions what the problem could be and how to fix it? I already tried with lower clamping force and I can see that the cable activates the mechanism on the dropper just fine, so I'm a little out of ideas...

    Got any tips for quieting internal cable rattle?

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  6 лет назад +1

      You can get small thin spongy tubes to put around your cable from hardware stores. That or cabe ties (no seriously, smallest size cable ties at intervals down the cable, feed it back through without cutting the ties - this way the ends of the ties push against the inside of the frame and work to stabilise the cable.).

    What frame size is that bike ?

  • @JeffHesterDesigns

    My Specialized FSR Elite 650b (size small) has an issue with the insertion length of the stock command post. This is a great post, but it will not drop into the frame all the way to the collar. This means I have to run it into the travel about 1.5" because I am only 5'2" tall. It makes riding a constant fight with the height. Any ideas on replacements or fixes?

      Really depends on how often and how aggressive you descend on trails and if you really need to get that saddle out of the way....

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  6 лет назад

      It all depends on the kind of trails you ride really! If you feel you need one then go for it! They're a great innovation and you're very unlikely to regret it 👌

    You forgot offset. If your stock seatpost has offset and you need it to get the right saddle position then your dropper will need offset too.

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  6 лет назад +1

      Sure! Just check cable compatibility first before you look into which one to get. If you don't have compatibility for internal cable routing, make sure you look at getting a non-stealth post 👍

    • @gtflyer
      @gtflyer 6 лет назад

      I have the KS eten 100mm dropper on my trek x caliber. Unfortunately, the 100 mm dropper is the most travel available that I know of. I got mine from Jenson USA, I'm sure most big bike shops have them.

    • @boomerangfreak
      @boomerangfreak 6 лет назад

      yeah I was looking for one for quite a while as well and KS eten(i) 272 seems to be the best available choice.
      I hacked the switch for the integrated lever to bodge it in my frame between the bottom bracket and the frame and it's been working great on my cube analog 29". Would love to get more than 100mm drop but it is what it is, running a 27.2mm seatpost just doesn't give you many options.
