i always interpreted the ending as once sorrow was acknowledged the different kingdoms came together. sorrow is a unifying force and is a part of love. you feel sorrow in the wake of a loss of a loved one which plays into klonoa's experiences. it is like how you said: this is why the king of sorrows looks similar to klonoa, even mimicking the collar klonoa wore in the first game. facing sorrow is what klonoa needed to do in the end because even if thinking about the memories hurts (and the fact that klonoa remembers huepow's words "we will always be together" and says it to lolo makes me believe he remembers phantomile) he still loved the people there and loved phantomile

    so just a few notes.
in klonoa 2 the one who summoned klonoa to lunatea was the kingdom of sorrow the same way huepow sommmoned klonoa to phantomile, huepow summoned him to save the world while KoS summoned him to save his kingdom from been forgoten. this concept could be explored, imagine if someone like ghadius summoned him, the purpose of the dream traveler could change accoding to the summoner.
second when they say klonoa looked like the godness claire, well godness claire is the statue that got destoyed in sea of tears, some say that thing she has on her head could be a head veil like the nuns use while other says it could be big long ears like klonoas

Massive kudos to you for playing through these classics! I sincerely hope that the good sales and reception of these remasters paves the way for a proper sequel. We need Klonoa back, dang it!
Also, it straight up amazes me that I've played through this game dozens of times before, and every time I notice something new or get new insights, like what you provided. It truly is timeless.

Tranquility. Joy. Anger. Indecision. These are the values seen strongly within the four kingdoms. Yet without Sorrow, the value of the fifth kingdom that was sealed away, all of these kingdoms face stagnation.
Why remain eternally within the Maze of Memory? Indeed, if there is no Sorrow in the past, yet there is Sorrow feared to come, there is no incentive to choose the future. Looking to the past is important, and thus so are times of Indecision within the here and now, yet without embracing that which is Sorrowful, in any time past or present, memories can become traps which are impossible to escape from.
Why does the kingdom of Volk fight in constant war? Is there no room for peace? Truly, there is a time to charge strongly into the future, to battle, to show Anger at wrongdoings. And yet, without the blue of Sorrow, how shall we see anything but red? If we cannot consider the tragedies of war, it shall not cease.
Why do the inhabitants of Joilant play all day and night? It may not seem bad, living in Joy at all times. But indeed, it is not healthy to drown Sorrow in endless pleasure, ignoring its weight. For why consider the past at all, or reprimand those who do wrong, or even simply relax oneself, if every moment is so much more enticing to step into?
Why do the priestesses fall ill in the face of chaos? Indeed, Tranquility is a balance. It itself is important for considering all other aspects of life. In Tranquility, one can see the reasoning for the importance of all the other kingdoms. Thereby, Tranquility is its own valuable state of being. And yet, without seeing the nature of even one aspect, the balance of Tranquility falters and fails. Thus, rejecting Sorrow is ultimately equal to being swallowed by it.
Just as the truth of dreams is to wake from them, so too is the truth of the world being full of Sorrow, and moreover, needing it. There will be times where friends shall come and go, but so long as you hold within your heart that sadness; the sadness of the goodbye; so too can you be with them for all time, being reminded of the times of Tranquility, Joy, even Anger and Indecision that led to the Sorrowful farewell.

Klonoa 2 is a master of symbolism. And, notably, it answers just how Klonoa was influenced by the events of the first game. Klonoa, namely, repeats Huepow's final promise to Lolo, in "We will always be together". Klonoa likely felt betrayed by Huepow after he woke up, but at some point, he came to the realization that Huepow really was always with him, in his heart. Even though he was not part of that world, he still learned from and treasured his time in Phantomile.
Just as Lolo is reflected in Leorina, so too is the King of Sorrow a reflection of Klonoa. The song for Hyuponia, Ruin of Sadness contains explicit portions of The Windmill Song, Untamed Heart (first Moon Kingdom level and a song associated with Klonoa entering dreams), and the Song of Rebirth (the song Klonoa was taken out of Phantomile to). Thus, the Kingdom of Sorrow reflects Klonoa's own sorrows, being treated as though a sealed dream. But Klonoa has accepted this Sorrow in his life, which is why he comes to realize the King of Sorrow needs his help. Note that Klonoa simply wants to prevent the world from falling into only Sorrow, but in the end he gives the King of Sorrow the peace that he could not attain from being sealed away.
But it's more than that. The King of Sorrow is the reason that Klonoa was pulled into Lunatea in the first place, both directly and indirectly. Huepow directly called upon the Dream Traveler to save the world, but indirectly wanted a friend. The King of Sorrow directly wanted revenge on a world that abandoned him and Sorrow, but really, he just wanted to be accepted again. And, notably, Lunatea's Veil was the only thing that prevented Klonoa from saving the King of Sorrow from the start. And a big part of that... was the ocean.
Klonoa heard the voice of the King of Sorrow most strongly when he was near the Sea of Tears/Kingdom of Sorrow. And where he emerged into Lunatea was no coincidence, either; he shot out of the Sea onto the waves. In the intro, he was not falling into darkness, but rather, rising from the sealed Kingdom of Sorrow due to Lunatea's Veil preventing it from being accessed.
You can actually see the King of Sorrow before entering the final boss level by getting all the gems in all the levels (including the bonus levels). He appears in the final artwork, though I won't spoil what the rest of that art entails in case you decide to earn it yourself.

Fantastic write-up! It really does have much more going on than I ever would have imagined. Initially looking at Klonoa I thought it'd just be a cute, wholesome platformer. I never expected it to get so *real*. Fantastic game, and as always another fantastic comment from you! I appreciate it, your comments were always a treat to read.
