This song was written as a letter for her son so when hes able to understand he can see just how hard she tried to keep the marriage going but in the end she had to be true to herself and stop living for her husband who wanted her to give up on her singing career . She tried it for 6 years but in the end she had to be who she is the greatest singer of our time , probably one of the very best there has ever been .

She is simply asking him to be easy on her with her decision for her own happiness despite the consequences her son may come around. It explains well in the 2nd verse. In 2nd verse, she says "You can't deny how hard I've tried. I changed who I was to put you both first//But now I give up" She even gave her ex-husband a house right by hers so he could have the best of both parents

Love this performance. Better imo than the special w/Oprah performance. Her breath control is amazing. Love her look too. I got to see her on her last tour. The way she opened with hello is amazing. Her Grammy performance for rolling in the deep is another. She’s definitely younger & sweet. I think it was her first performance back after her surgery.
