We are getting ready to replace our 15 year Norcold fride with a residential fridge. Good video.
Recently got a used wildwood grey wolf and the previous owners hadn’t taken care of the fridge at all, replaced it with a much lighter Frigidaire fridge from Walmart and so far it works great 👍
A 3/8" brass flared plug. Thats the goods I needed, thanks! :EDIT: The hardest part was getting the old fridge out of the trailer!
Thank you so much for this video. My Norcold 811 went out and my TT is a 2017 model bought new in 2018. I didn't have a lot of complaints about the old one until it leaked ammonia. The Texas heat killed it I am pretty sure. The cooling unit, refurbed, is $800, new about $1100 and a new Norcold without doors- $1900. The labor to put in a new residential would be quicker and easier than replacing the cooling unit. Nope. This is a no brainer. I will deal with the power outages from travel or a hurricane or a freeze when it happens. Thanks again.
Bili K.
Glad it helped thanks for watching
Just spoke today about getting rid of my duel fridge setup.
After watching, hell ya, you two rockin and rollin.
You're gunna love the upgrade
I truly appreciate you showing the process thoroughly. Great job!
Glad it helped
Great video. Just got rid of the old one and got a Magic Chef I'm getting ready to put in.
Great video! Where did you find the latch for the refrigerator?
So glad I found your video. We live in our 2007 Montana fifth Wheel. Our refrigerator completely died! Not only did your video help so much with the removal/ install process, we ended up purchasing the same Magic Chef model that y'all did and it fit absolutely perfect into the original opening! Thanks Again
We are really glad the video helped and thanks for watching!
What model Magic Chef did you end up with I need 1 2.
You will love it; In our new 19 TT we have a Norcold 10.7 12V and it always stays on through the entire trip. This was a must-have could not go back to Gas & Eletric
is the magic chief still working? seeing lots of compressor failures and thinking about another brand. Thanks
Yes it still works great
We just replaced our 8 cubic foot dometic in our 30 ft freedom Express travel trailer with a residential 10 cubic foot magic chef. We did have to do some very minor adjustment for a little more room at the top however other than that it fit perfectly. So much more room!!! Very easy to install. Though, the one thing that I see people do on their gas line when they close it off, they put tape or some kind of junk around the threads to seal it, this is not necessary because a brass plug will seal itself. I should have done this a long time ago!
It is one of our favorite upgrades.
Robert, what model fridge did you buy? Byron, 29RDLS Freedom Express
We bought the dematic I'm sorry it took me so long to respond
RDLS 29-5 freedom Express
@@h2ologged I'm sorry it took me so long to respond we bought the dometic for our RLDS 29:5 freedom Express and it's wonderful cold cold
I want to travel short distances in my teadrop, and hook up to shore power at the campground. I want to use a small dorm size frig instead of making trips to get ice all of the time. You answered my question about how to manage the residential frig while traveling. Thanks!
Glad it helped, thanks for watching.
Can you tell me once stocked with goods and down to temps how often does the fridge run and amps drawn? Hoping that my 1100 watts of solar and 400AH of battery will keep up.
You'll have plenty of power, it averages less than 100 watts an hour
I’m so done with my norcold1210. Spent a whopping $2.3k last summer and it quit on me this month. I’m docked 24/7 and this just is the way to go 😅 thank you for posting and inspiration!
Verna Gonzalez, what size model did you use to replace the 1210?
First time ever commenting on a youtube video. Just wanted to say thank you for this awesome vid! My wife and I are first time full timers. We renovated a 2000 Montana and are extremely happy with it. The Dometic fridge stopped working this week and found this video as a solution. We purchased the same exact fridge and were up and running in hours. We are DIY'ers and trying to do it on the cheap. Love all your videos, very helpful. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for watching and we are honored we are your first comment! We try to share all of our trial and errors with other RVers and are glad we were able to help! Safe travels and enjoy the journey.
@@RVLivingYet "...purchased the same exact fridge..." What brand fridge was/is it? You shared dimensions and also the big box store where you purchased it, but I'd like to know
what brand residential fridge is doing the job here? Thanks in advance; nice video hack for ditching the fkng NorCold/Dometic junk.
@@ingredients710 it was a magic chef 10.1 from home depot.
I got the same brand & size from Home Depo as well. Black 🖤 . I love the look, big size & seprate temperature regulation for fridge & freezer. I had to take out a small overhead cabinet, but I didn't mind.
Yes, we love the difference. The size and tempature regulation was a big one for us too. Thanks for watching!
Turning off the gas AND bleeding them is very smart. Good tip. We bought our rig with a residential fridge. Unfortunately, it went out while we were traveling. It was MUCH more difficult to replace than yours. Had to get it in the window. Lol. This looks pretty darn easy. Thanks for sharing!
It was pretty easy, going in the window would be tough. Thanks for watching.
Great video. We have also a Norcold 8cf refrigerator on our new 2022 Entegra Vision and it does not cool. We took the motorhome back to the selling dealer in Las Vegas from our home in Northern CA, (big expense in gasoline). They did a diagnostic and determined that it needed to be replaced, and now we wait maybe 2 to 3 months for the replacement to come, and then back to Las Vegas to have it replaced. I hope the new one does not crap our like the new one that came with the motorhome. I see in our future changing it to something like you just installed. Thank you for the video.
For the amount of $$ in gas to travel to the dealer twice(diagnosis and then the actual repair) you could of just bought the residential refrig.
@@TheMinnow101 You are correct.
The fridge lock is a great idea but drilling into that area there are some models with heating tubes for drying upper freezer condensation. If you hit the line will loose all the fluid
@@TimsWorkshopTJY luckily the screws weren't that deep...
Hey guys
Just installed the magic chef in our GD 303rls. Your video was great and really helped.
Thanks so much..
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
What model Magic Chef did you use thank you I need to replace mine
@@richardyoung5586
Not at my rig for a few days, but it was the cheapest home Depot unit, great reviews. I think 10 cf. Same as the one they used.
Nice! Our refrigerator died and spewed out ammonia yesterday so we are doing this.
Glad it helped, we are happy with the upgrade.
Getting ready to do this next week. Thanks for the video. Hope it is still serving you well.
Yes ours is still working great, very happy with the upgrade.
Thank you guys so much! I got the same fridge but my old one was a little different in the back but you two had me prepared! In and out in 10 minutes! I should of done this a long time ago. Over twice the room!
Thanks for watching, glad it helped!
Nice video. I have the same RV as you and am in the process of replacing the original Dometic with a residential frog. I got mine ar Home Depot too, not the same brand but the same 10.1 cubic feet. The one thing I just finished up doing is rebuilding the floor the frig sits on. Mine wasn't that solid so I pulled the plywood out and installed legs at the corners and sides along with a 4x4 center support. It is solid now. How did you wire your 110 line to the inverter? Did you disconnect the original wire at the fuse panel and wire it to the inverter or did you run an all new line from the inverter to the plug behind the rig? Also what size inverter did you use? I'm looking at a pure sine wave 2000 watts. I have two lead acid batteries. We very seldom boondock so I think it will work for now. Time will tell.
We have a 2000watt inverter tied to our electric panel. We have videos on our channel about this.
Is there a link for the door lock? Also can we have a follow up on any trim work around the fridge?
Etrailer has the locks, we ended up not trimming it, looks fine and adds to air flow.
I searched and can't find the locks. Do you remember their actual name by chance?
You show a locking handle for the doors. Where did you get this
Hey Ya'll! I wanted to let you know that I was able to install my new Magic Chef fridge yesterday and I could not have done it without your help! Thank you!!! Your instructions were perfect, right down to the 3/8" plug for the gas line. The hardest part was getting the old rv fridge out of the front door of my 5th wheel...had to bend the metal frame and inch it out carefully, but managed to do it. The new one looks great and is working fine. It seems so much bigger and now I can have real ice trays! Haha! 😄 Thank you again for your help. I hope ya'll are happy and well. Safe travels! 😊
That's so awesome, you're going to love it. Thanks again for keeping us posted.
What size Magic Chef did you buy and where thank you
By chance is the gas line long enough for a bbq hook up?
No but you may be able to add an extension.
Hi Sabrina! I am sick of my fridge!!! Lol. Great videos, hope you guys are doing well!
Hi Ron, all is well here, hope you and the family are doing great! Thanks for checking out the video.
Great video guys. I am having trouble finding that friglock you installed in the video.. We're doing the same exact refrigerator in our RV.
Etrailer .com sells that lock. Thanks for checking out the video
Thank you! I'm just about to do this very thing and your video was the most instructional that I've found. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom! I am grateful and believe I can do this too.
Good luck with your project!
@@RVLivingYet Thank you! I'll let you know how it goes 😏
Good video guys.
Did the same except that I put the drain at the back outside because when it does it's defrost the water stay inside the rv and if you are on the road it can spill on the floor of the fridge in a house no problem but in a rv when moving could be !!!
plus I add vent filter to the outside access door to prevent mosquito to go inside the rv
This video was SO HELPFUL!! We just replaced our fridge 🙌🏼 Thank you!
Glad it helped!
We are looking to install the same fridge in our trailer. Where did you get the little fridge lock thing?
We found the latch on etrailer dot com, not sure if they carry it anymore.
I have a 31KQBTS wildwood and need to replace mine. Without taking it out would you know if there is a plug in.spot. I didn't see that in your video.
I got that same exact fridge for my rv, but then discovered I was suppossed to have 5 inches clearance on both sides! It seems some of the condenser in enclosed in the sides and it needs to let the heat out.
Fixing a $350 30ft Joyco to travel for work and I’m pretty sure the fridge doesn’t work nice to know it’s that easy peasy
Was that a norcold 1210 that you removed?
An older video was very helpful. What size inverter, battery amp and solar is supporting it?
What did you use for the locking mechanism any pictures ty
Link or name... Door holder (lock)?
Pretty darn good vid! Im a do it all kinda guy and you just confirmed the MANY questions I had!
Thank you for doing this video w/o all the extra BS everyone else seems to think they need to add to make their vid more interesting/better (loved it) well done!
Thanks again✌🏼and safe travels
thank you for the great comment, we try to share the step by steps and Im glad it helps, safe travels to you as well.
My only concern is that wasp going to get in and build a nest I'm thinking about sealing up my back access panel? Any thoughts on that? My my installation is not tight around the front on the inside of the camper
We hot glued window screen on the inside of the access panels to keep bugs out.
i replace 2 fridges already and sealed the opening with plastic toward the outside and plywood on the inside to keep heat out and intruders out also.
thanks for the video, I have purchased a Travel trailer and everything works I parked it at my place and now I cant get it to work, the fridge didn't work now the freezer doesn't either. I was thinking about doing the same thing. I have 30 amp power so that isn't a problem. yall made it look so easy i'm going to go home and check to see if it will fit. my question is where did yall get the latch? I cant find anything like it. I don't plan on moving it much since I live in it but id still like to have the latch on it thanks
Its been one of our favorite upgrades. We got the latch at etrailer dot com
Curious thing: At about this time, 4 years or so ago, everyone was getting the same Magic Chef 10.1 CF refrigerator. Looking today, no one has it in stock, Magic Chef offers no sources for buying it but does not indicate it has been discontinued. Still, the model simply is not available.
What what name for lock on the doors you installed???
Thanks for the video! Has this refrigerator had any major effect on your electric? We’ve had ours for about 2 weeks and our electric is going to be through the roof. It’s not constantly running and insulated properly, any advice?
Ours did not do that. Hard to tell what is going on with yours. Thanks for watching though...
@@RVLivingYet thank you for responding! It just so happened that we were having refrigerator problems but the spike in our bill was because our meter was read wrong by the owner!! We overpaid and immediately panicked thinking our electric was spiking because of the new fridge! False alarm, I don’t want to scare anyone. A new fridge was such a good investment, thanks again for the video!
Where can I get that door latch you installed to keep door closed while traveling
Thank you so much. Looking forward to getting my new Haier installed next week. My RV is a 2018 and the Dometic already DIED!! $1500 for new Dometic or. $480 for NEW Haier. No brainer. Question?? Can this fridge run off deep cycle batteries using an Inverter??
Its crazy how much they want for these crappy RV fridges, we are way happier with the new frig. Good luck on the project.
@@RVLivingYet it is done and looks great. Thank you for the inspiration. We went with the stainless steel.
So was there a wire 14/2 installed with breaker?
There is already an outlet behind the fridge for when its in electric mode. When you set your fridge to 'auto' it will first check and use electric. If that is not present, then it uses propane.
Thank You!! Fantastic video
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
How did you get power to the fridge since you took the fuse out?
There is a 110v outlet back there.
Great video, did I miss the wiring part of new fridge?
There is an existing 110v outlet in the back.
@@RVLivingYet Is there commonly an outlet in that back panel?

How is that new residential refrigerator doing 1 year later??
No issues. Well worth the switch....
From info given, you installed a "bigger" refrigerator where a "smaller" was. How so?
Wouldn't a bigger refrigerator require some customization?
Please explain how you fit a bigger refrigerator into the same space.
Same size exterior but more interior space in a residential frig versus RV fridge
Thanks. I was hoping cubic ft. numbers would be included. I'm in this situation and not having any luck finding residential to fit in existing space(Norcold 611RT) but by only a few inches. Thanks for responding.

We got it at etrailer .Com , thanks for watching.
That frig looked heavy. Good job.
Not too bad just akward
Finally, I never thought I would break down and buy a residential fridge, but you and I both know Absorption type fridges are not designed to be in a slide-out. my new Whirlpool 11.6 cu ft fridge gets delivered tomorrow. noticed the door lock you installed. where can I pick that up at??

What kind of solar power and inverter do you have just installed this fridge in our camper due to watching thus video
We have solar install videos on our channel if you want more details.
Hello and thank you for your video. It was very helpful. I replaced my fridge with a residential fridge and I had 1 question for you. I saw you installed a locking mechanism so the doors don't fall out. Would you be able to tell me where you purchased it or if you can send the link. I use child locks to keep the doors closed when traveling but that would be much more helpful.
Thank you in advance 🙏
Thanks for watching, we got the latch on etrailer .Com
What kind of child locks did you use?
Great video. I just bought a brand new Keystone Sprinter with a Furrion Arctic 12V 10cf frig, it's junk and I can't get anywhere with Furrion, I'm just going to bite the bullet and replace it with the model in your video. How is it holding up? And thank you for a very good video.
Glad it helped, ours is still working great.
I love how your slide has a pitched roof why can’t they do them all like this ❤
Nice Video.
Do you happen to know this ? Since I do not have solar, doesn’t my battery charge when traveling and hooked to my truck? if so then maybe I just need more batteries to run a residential fridge when traveling.
Your truck should trickle charge the batteries while your driving but it will not be enough to run the frig, a decent battery and inverter will work for shorter trips.
@@RVLivingYet Thanks for replying so quickly

How much is the weight difference between the fridges? I'm concerned about adding extra weight.
Its about the same
The residential refrigerator is actually significantly lighter than the absorption style
So, what all did you have to do electrical wise? Were you able to just plug in your fridge immediately? Or did you have to do something special?
There is a standard 110v plug in the back.
Can you tell me where you got the fridge lock
Have you had any issues with the new fridge? is it pretty quiet?
Still working great, can't hear it running.
Great job, thanks for sharing! We're about to replace our Propane fridge with a residential one that, like yours, doesn't have the condenser coils on the back, which means they are embedded at the sides. The manual says we'd need 4 inches free space at both sides and back and top for proper ventilation. We don't have that, and from your video we don't think you had it either... So how did you go about ventilating yours? Thanks in advance for your tips.
We have the 2 vents in the back to the exterior and to be honest even if this frig only lasts a year or 2 its cheap enough to replace and way better than the Norcold. Over 1 year so far and no issues.
Please keep us up-to-date on any problems with fridge. We just installed the exact fridge in our jayco pull behind.
My nevercold quit after 2 years. Im looking at replacing it with the same refrigerator as you did. I have a couple of questions. How much heat does the magic chef put out? Also during the winter months does the cold air coming through your outside vents affect your compressor? I have read that alot of these type of units are made to operate in temperatures ranging from 55 degrees to around 100 degrees. I appreciate your video.
Thanks for watching, the frig does not seem to put off much heat, we are in Florida in the winter so there isnt much issue with the cold coming in but you could insulate around the front of the frig if needed.
I also have a NOCOLD N8XF pos, I have that exact Magic chef in the garage of the toy hauler. My problem will be securing the top since I don't have upper access panel. Also all I want to use the inverter for is travel time. What size inverter will I need to operate 2 of the magic chefs. Just for traveling not camping. Will run generator or shore power for camping.
Where did you plug it in? Did I miss it somewhere?
You can clearly see it plugged in to the existing outlet at @8:13.
I wud move the gas line out of compartment just incase- there are any sparks each time fridge goes into cooling mode... Just an on off chance. Yes I watched you sealed line well... But on the off chanc there's an imperfection in future, & gas builds up in that small area between fridge & outside door. how to move it without breaking it? Attach another hose that can be routed down &/or out that can be unattached later if someone wants a 2 - 3way rv fridge(idOnO Y thA wud bt).. anyway, I don't know squat.. here's my question, have you researched how much space is needed for ventilation/cooling on back & or top of a standard home depot or watever, compression watchamacallit fridge? You may have to remove back several " of that top ins., &/or install another vent- on outside wall👋
There is a vent on the top and bottom of the back wall to the exterior so there should be plenty of ventilation for the heat and gas should there be an issue but its more safe now that its capped than before when there was a gas valve back there that could fail with a pilot light.
@@RVLivingYet
thNx, btw the vent question(while it could ofcours be about propane caution) was about fact the fridges are better not to overheat(that's why some have cooling fans back there), yours has a second vent, that helps 👋
I just installed the same fridge in my 5th wheel. Where did you buy the frig lock gadget?
We got the latch at etrailer dot com.
Unable to locate the lock. Does the product have a specific name or brand name?
I will second that question.
Awesome video
Thank you!
Great Video. I am installing the same Fridge tomorrow in our RV. Our Current fridge is sweating and destroyed all of the wood on the front and side. It's also too small and does not keep food cool. Did you just plug the residential fridge to the 110 plug that is located in the back of the RV fridge? Thanks
Yes we capped the gas and 12v and use the 120v plug.
We just purchased the same refrigerator!!!. Some of the trays were broken in shipping and it made us return it to the store for a replacement. But it also made us think about how to prevent this from happening once we install it. Have you had any damage while traveling? How do you keep the items from bouncing around?
We have never had anything damaged while traveling. They honestly do not bounce around 🤷♀️ I guess if you are going off road, you may have those issues😂 You should be fine...You will need a latch to keep the doors shut though. Thanks for watching! Safe travels😊

I really appreciate the video. Where did you get that fridge lock. Looks perfect!
That's what I'm looking for also. We just replaced our refrigerator with a residential and we need to install locks for the road. I'm not finding any that he used in this video. Would love to know where he got them.
Is this the same as changing the fridge out from a gas/electricity fridge to a 12v fridge? That's what we want to do but I'm not sure how to get the 12v connection to the fridge
The procedure is the same but you will probably have to run a wire to your 12v system since I doubt the small 12v wire back there can handle the amperage.
Great Video ! Can you tell me where did you get the "Fridge Lock"?
Etrailer dot com has them
Looks pretty easy, thanks!
Not too bad, pretty easy DIY
what brand and model frig did you replace it with? and how did you make the solor panels to power the frig?
The frig was a Magic Chef 10.1 and check out our solar video series on how our solar power works.
@Techplay RR Solar doesn't "power" anything. All it does is charge your batteries. If you have an inverter it will turn the DC voltage in the batteries into AC voltage that the fridge can run on.
HEY HEY SABRINA STEVE HERE AGAIN LOOKING AT AN ILD VIDEO AGAIN. THAT NEW FRIDGE LOOKED GOOD BUT HEAVY. I HAVE TO REPLACE MINE IN MY HOUSE HOPEFULLY THE COMPANY MEN CAN HELP ME. I WILL TRY TO CATCH UP WITH THE OTHER VIDEOS I HAVEN'T SEEN. THANKS AGAIN.

One of the most thorough installation videos on this topic that I've seen! The only things you didn't show were plugging it in (I assume you used the existing outlet back there) and loading the food back in (except maybe that lettuce 😉). Thanks!
