  • In 1969 Airfix released their brown boxes of 1/32 scale ww2 toy soldiers.
They were by far better then anything available at the time.
1969 saw the release of 5 sets.
    -German Infantry
    -US Infantry
    -Russian Infantry
    -British Commandos
-British Paratroops (which was the only set released in 1968)
The next few years saw the release of 4 more sets.
    -British 8th Army
    -German Afrika Korps
    -Japanese Infantry
    -Australian Infantry
I forgot to mention in the video how many poses and how many of each figure you got.
There were 8 poses in total. You got.
1 officer, 5 standing riflemen, 5 kneeling riflemen, 4 submachine gunners, 6 running soldiers, 4 grenadiers, 2 machine gunners and 2 loaders.

The artist who painted all the Airfix box art at that time was Roy Cross. He was fairly famous and according to Wikipedia is still alive and will be 100 on 23 April, in just a few weeks time!

That´s right. Forgot to check yesterday. There´s a great picture of him in one of the books on Airfix, were he´s in his house with a helmet and a broom, taken by his wife. It was to help him get more natural looking "soldiers" on the box art. That photo was the base for the british 8th army soldier on the box of the mulitpose set@@williambooth5769

I seem to remember the boxes were white with a small matchbox size clear window, either on the front or back, I can’t remember as it was in the late ‘60. I mainly had the smaller 1/72, or 00 scale, as the range went from ancient British and the Romans, to Robin Hood, Napoleonic , Boer War, WWI &WWII, and some modern stuff. I always hoped the 00 range would extend to 1/32, as they would have been easier to paint. Unfortunately, I grew up and had to go to work! 😀

My younger days (1969 - 1973) were spent saving pocket money and birthday money to buy these sets from Boydells in Gosforth, Ncle upon Tyne. I had many sets. Germans were grey, Africa Corp were beige, Commandos were green. Used to set up dioramas in the back garden. Defensive positions or assault platoons then bombard the positions with my catapult. Hours of fun. Loved them.
Strangely, I joined the British Army as an infantry soldier and retired as Platoon Sgt after 10 yrs. Thanks for sharing this video.. Now 64 yrs but I have fond memories of my little platoons.

Same - when walking into a grocery store - the combination of fresh fruit and vegetables, maybe peanuts cooking, the non-toxic packaging, and bubble gum used to taste different - they used non-petro chemicals in the ingredients. I saw my first Airfix German Infantry in 1972 when we lived in military housing on Fort Hood Texas. I was 6 at the time and was amazed at how they looked. A friend down the street had them. My father got posted to the DMZ in Korea and his tour was without dependents so we lived in south Texas from Oct 72 to Oct 73. When we got back to Fort Hood in late 73 is when I began my search for those German Infantry. In early 74 is when I learned to search in the model section instead of the toy section for the Airfix figures. All my boxes are the Target style and I got them at a department store called Gibson's. I had several of these Airfix kits, when I was a kid in the 80s. They were hand me downs, given to me by my parents friends, whose kids had grown out of them. We had countless of hours of fun playing with them with my friends. We used to set them up in my sandbox, and take turns bombing the opposing forces with our golf balls. I also had a lot of the cheaper sets, that used to be sold in them clear plastic bags. Even back then, I realized that the Airfix ones were on a different level, even though I didn't know what they were. I wish I had the sense to hold on to them, but unfortunately they are long gone now.

I remember these yes. One box in a 10,000 had the figure of Hitler too. You could pretend it's 30/4/1945 wrap it in a tiny 'blanket', douse it in petrol and burn it. And then spend decades debating whether it was really dead or living in Argentina. There was also the French army set - but when you opened the box and looked at them they all had their hands raised.

From the age of 5 (70-71) I obsessively collected the British Africa corp and German infantry. The local newsagents used to sell the figures individually for Tuppence (2 pence in old money) because like many families where I grew up a complete box was un-affordable. Pocket money of 2 shillings was 2 soldiers 2p each, 1p on sweets and 5p on a huge bag of grapes (for some reason I loved grapes?)! My mother collected 40 or so cigarette packets and with brown wallpaper and paste created a fort with which I could conduct my desert campaign. 100's of Hours holding sieges, hostage negotiations and night time raids. Such amazing memories brought vividly to life by the realism of these beautiful figures.

@@toysoldiernostalgia Thanks for the response and sending me in the right direction! I've spent the last few hours watching your airfix and matchbox videos as well as looking at photos of the sets elsewhere, and at this point I'm pretty sure what I had in that bucket were a knockoff mix of both Airfix and Matchbox army men.
The Germans were all molded in dark grey with a mix of the Matchbox Afrika Korps as well ones from this airfix set like the grenade thrower with the rifle slung on his back.
The "US Infantry" were molded in forrest green and look to be a mix of Matchbox's US soldiers like the officer with the binoculars and raised hand or the heavy machine gunner, but the rest seem to be Airfix's British Paratroopers like the standing one with the bren gun, the grenade thrower with the sten gun in his other had, or the one on guard with a fixed bayonet. Oddly enough though the helmets on the paratroopers were all smooth and missing the camo foliage netting the Airfix ones had which makes me think they're all recasts.
The bucket also came with a couple of small brown cannons, a couple of sandbag bunkers, silver barbed wire, and American as well as modern day Germany's flag with mounds of dirt to stick them into.

An older kid up the road had the Germans & British commandos, I was about six and I was hooked. I used to sneak into Mum & Dad's room where he had an Ice cream container he would throw coins into it. I would raid it and carry a bag full of 5, 2 & 1 cents for the poor store lady to count. Even if I was 1 cent short I had to return home to find a cent! So many summers and winters blissfully spent and used Corgi Tank models as well. Sadly with their recent re-issue, the quality of the plastic just doesn't have that feel. Watching your video brought back the smell and excitement of opening box👏👏

No one ever forgets the smell of a fresh set of toy soldiers.
