I don't he's "sad," he was just being realistic. He knew there were faster cars starting behind him and he would ultimately get passed. Quite frankly, once the race started, I was surprised in stayed in 2nd place for as long as he did.

Fernando, Vettel and Kimi in the recent senior club realized that. Max has realized it among the new generation and is pretty measured in his interviews.

Took even michael schumacher his 3rd season in mercedes to actually set pole at monaco after his comeback in his 40s, albeit he also made it to the front row in china. Given how most good drivers lose performance by 34-35 and leave the sport or retire or are dropped, this is a testament to the fact that fernando achieved something special.

F1 is such an extreme and high intensity sports. It’s completely understandable, even to be expected, that drivers will not stay calm throughout the race. What’s more relevant is from the way he spoke and how he understood and analysed what had happened, Max has clearly become a much more mature, respectable, and even dignified driver. He deserves more respect than many people are willing to give him

Don’t wanna jynx anything, but taking into consideration that both Leclerc and Pérez start further back, i don’t think Max will defend to harsh into turn 1, cause this is the race that he can really create a nice gap in the championship. Also i think the RB is faster on racepace than the alpine an he is just gonna go for a safe drs overtake later in the race, but you never know!
Agree, if he has a bad start he will not take the risk to be taken out of the race. He has a much better pace then Alpine so he will pass Alonso anyway. Also Alonso is smart enough to not make the fight to hard because he knows he will not have a chance against a RB.
yeah, Max isn´t going to risk anything against an Alpine if Alonso get´s one of his blistering fast starts. Just let him pass, wait 1-2 lap, pass him and hope Alonso defends like the lion he does while Max drives of into the distance:)
