1:53 It's not that the mushroom is transparent, it's that while the mushroom is emerging from the block, it's behind the layer the blocks are on. Presumably then the stars are on the same layer as the ? blocks, or on a layer in front of them. Regardless, as soon as the mushroom is fully out of the block, it pops in front of the stars. At 12:29 you see it again with the mushroom coming up behind the bars in the window.
this made me realize I kinda want the full compilation of Kosmic's romhack "I've never gotten to do this before!" examples can we get people timestamping each time he does a "first" ??

Have you ever played 'Journey to the West' smb1 hack? It's pretty new; made by someone going by the name of Inkbox in 2022. So, yeah, pretty new. It's one of the best hacks I have ever played. And I've played a ton of them. On a regular game, you cycle through 4 different characters, a monk, a bird,(EDIT: Maybe it's a monkey? or a tanooki suit?) a couple others things (EDIT: a friar and a guy with pointy ears?) that I'm not sure what they are exactly; and have infinite lives. (EDIT: their powerups all look different.) It's a complete hack and is extremely refined. One of my favorites.

The characters are a Monk, Son Wukong (The Monkey King, which served as inspiration for Goku and many other characters), a Pig-Monster and an Ogre Friar. Also, it seems like Kosmic played it earlier this year, so thanks for pointing me to more content!
I want to take a drink everytime Kosmic throws for content and/or gets hit by something easily avoidable but I would've died of alcohol poisoning like 30 Romhack Wednesdays ago if I did 🤣
Do you normally stream on Tuesdays on Twitch? I've slowly been getting comfortable with that platform after some close friends started DJing on there so I've started following gaming RUclipsrs that also stream on Twitch. It's been fun interacting in the chats over there.
I'm not sure exactly how it works, but some of the collision logic only checks if you are inside a block, not whether that block is visible or invisible. So basically, if you are partially inside an invisible block, you can clip through walls, because you are already colliding with a wall. In the case of one-tile gaps, you fall through because you don't get the usual corner boost you need to get back up after falling into the gap. (While walking over air, you fall slightly, but when you hit the ledge on the other side, you are high enough that it normally automatically pushes Mario back up, letting you walk over one-tile gaps. But if you don't hit the ledge, because you're already colliding with a wall, then you just fall and die.)

they're on the same layer. the NES only has layers for sprites, tiles, and the background color
