I was stationed in the USS Puget Sound US Navy 6th Fleet Flagship home ported in Gaeta 1980 - 1983. I'm almost 60 yrs old and still this beautiful city remains my favorite place on Earth. The best times of my life were here. The best friends, the very best foods and overall culture. There are many restaurants that I frequently dined at, especially the Tratorias. At the time my favorite place was "il Gambero d'Oro" in town. That was the best place for Spaghetti Alla Carbonara and Penne Arrabiata. In Gaeta vecchio a local named Gino had the best Calamari Fritta. Bar Ermes on the water front often had Arrancini that I have craved ever since. Before it sank, The Pizza Boat was an awesome place to have dinner. Usually I had pan pizza next to the cinema at the opening of Via Indepenza... Or at Pizza di Franco e Franca behind the cinema in a tiny street off of Via Fratelli Bandieri. I had 2 Italian roommates who were in the Italian Guardia di Finanza. They taught me a lot of the culture and language. We often sat around playing Scopa and having a beer. We saved our empty Peroni liter bottles and filled them with espresso, froze it and carried it to Serapo beach for a nice Cafe Giaccio. We had a great friend Mario Grossi who was both Italian from Campo di Mele and partly British raised. Our apartment was a popular place to party amongst the many English and French girls from the bars in old Gaeta and Americans from the ship. The best toasted Sub sandwich I've ever eaten to this day was from Bill and Nella's bar across from the Navy Port. It is called Rendezvous now ran by the daughters whom I remember as girls about 6yrs old. Vick ran a nice bar next to the Navy base gate who everyone lived, especially his father Nino (r.i.p.) Arlette and Claudio ran the Red Light bar, Lou ran the Splash-b-Way Bar, I liked the Hide Away bar a lot. The "Otto e Mezzo" was ran by Rita and Sal they were gems! (R. I. P.) The 8-1/2 bar is now owned by Maurizio who previously owned the California bar I think it was called. The old Papillon bar I believe is now owned by my friends Graziella and Amadeo. I still listen to Pino Danielle from Naples. I once even saw Mario Merola sing (ask your grand parents). Gaeta is where I left my heart... Not San Fransisco! javaratusso gm**l dotcom
@@lucadicecca22 Buona Sera Luca... Wow, I do wish I could come back to Gaeta. I hope most things have not changed! When I was there we still had to use a Telefon Gettoni at the payphone... Lol If the fisherman still display and sell their daily catch along Via Lungo Mare and people still go for a passagiata after eating... It's still great! By the way, your English is super good! I was wondering if you know or have heard of the people I spoke of in my previous comment? My email is javaratusso at Gmail.Com OK.. Feel free to send me some pics of Gaeta. I'd love that!
