LOVE LOVE LOVE this! It took me years of gardening to figure out that certain bugs are better at pest management than I am. It's their full-time job to eat other bugs. Now I just hand-pick leaf-footed bugs and leaf-hoppers and intervene for spider mites. Everything else gets to run its course bc nature balances it out if I wait.
This is a great video! I try to let beneficial insects do their jobs, but I'm kind of new to Arizona so I'm still learning which ones are beneficial and which ones are not. Your video helped a lot in that respect. I also love to plant beneficial flowers for the good insects and let many of my veggies go to flower to attract more. Thanks again and would like to see more on this subject!
I've been pesticide free for a few years now and it's made me get slightly more comfortable with bugs 😅 the wasps especially have never stung me or been an issue, I appreciate them and have had far less pest pressure compared to when I was using neem oil frequently
The only thing I occasionally use in my garden is BT. With that said, I’m thinking I last used it in the fall for cabbage loopers on young brassicas. Once they get bigger, I will remove some leaves and feed the chickens. I don’t like to use neem oil mainly because it causes the sun to burn the leaves. My biggest issue is squash bugs. I feel like I can barely grow squash at all. Last year my battle was epic. I had probably 10 varieties of squash, and wound up harvesting maybe 2 winter squash and 6 summer squash. This year, I planted 4 squash plants, they got them all. I’m waiting to plant more in a few weeks, hoping it will be late enough in the season, and I’ll get some squash. I’ve tried picking them off, vacuuming them off, duct tape for eggs, nothing works. I’ve been looking into kaolin clay.
Such great information! I was surprised to see hummingbirds eat aphids off my roses. Every spring I get a container of ladybugs 🐞 and let them loose on the roses, also for the aphids.
Gracias! I've moved to northern Mexico (desert climate) and have started from zero with gardening here. Your channel is a life saver and I appreciate you!
Both aphids and squash bugs get in the flowers and kill pollenation. I have to hand pollinate. I’m waiting for more beneficials. I’m in Palm Springs area and it’s tough but learning daily. 5 years later and always learning something new! Enjoy your videos!
Ohhh I’ve been seeing assassin bugs in my Arizona garden and didn’t realize they are beneficial. They were enjoying my yarrow flowers hehe. Thank you for this information
Really needed this video because I had flying bugs only in late afternoon.. going to try and get a pic but they are very small looking flys hopefully they are good
I have a bunch of assassin bugs on my carrot flowers. I've been watching them the last few days trying to catch flies that are attracted to the flowers.
Perfect timing, Angela. Help!! I will get an app to identify the insect that destroyed my lettuce crop. In the morning all was well, by evening gone. I left overgrown parsley for the ladybugs in the neighboring raised bed. Along with the parsley I had successful potatoes and rhubarb. All of the potato plant leaves were GONE at nightfall yet fine that morning. Under the parsley I found a nest with 16 eggs.
Hi What about red firebugs? I'm in Mesa, AZ and I have tons of those everywhere by my garden, in my garden, on the wall....are they bad or good? Thanks for always supplying lots of information in your videos. I love that it pertains to where I live and grow. tfs
Your lavender is so beautiful! May I ask what kind is it? I kill every kind here in Florida💔 The video was SUPER helpful 🎉👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Thank you for all you share🙏
Have you ever heard of Arbico Organics? They are based in Tucson and have a ton of different beneficial insects! Including those that thrive in the the heat
I haven’t had to spray anything in my garden for a long time. It’s true that nature will eventually work itself out. I’ve planted more flowers and added bee houses. But now I’m seeing damage to my roses from leaf cutter bees. I planted a few roses and they are still very small and the leaf cutter bees are really causing damage to the leaves. They also seem to love my grape vines. What do you recommend for this issue? Since it’s a beneficial causing “damage”. Thanks
@@GrowingInTheGarden lol. That’s funny. I didn’t even notice your beautiful arches. Did you get your wall trellises from the same company? And that amazing obelisk you have in one of your wooden pot things?
I never seem to have balance in time to protect my produce. I have grasshoppers right now so bad when i walk to the garden they part like a red sea - I don't think the garden will survive them. When I shop for plants or seeds for the garden my husband always says I spend more on feeding the insects than our family. After 4 years of so many lost gardens I am too discouraged to continue.
The tough part of being a beginner is that, I'll go do something that I think is right in my garden... Then later that day, or the next day I find out I did the wrong thing! 🤦♀️
Right………. But I have so many birds friends nesting or visiting in our yard that I rarely see those big no bugs gold finches, house/carolina wren ,Carolina chickadees, cardinals my power house friends wipe them all my yard is 70% native 20% brassicas 10% annual it works!
I have some flower starts under my grow lights inside and they have thrips, I think! Is it ok to take transplant them outside if I can't kill the thrips first (it seems impossible 😞) or will that lead to an infestation in my garden? I have noticed many lady bugs in my yard and so I'm hoping that natural predators take over...
Hi Angela, what about termites? They seem to be in the entire yard in Sun City My husband wanted to know what we should do? We are getting rid of the rotted palm tree and rotted oleander.
I have a Jalapeno plant that I noticed had lots of plant ants on it. Inspecting it, I noticed it was because they were farming aphids. Any recommendations?
From one Master Gardener to another...this is one of the very best videos I've ever seen on this subject! Thank you!
Wow. Thanks so much, appreciate it.

Such a great video. Adding native plants is key!

I'd take a year or two off. If you don't want to do that, don't plant until later in the season for sure.
I have really been wanting a video on bugs for a while so thank you!! This has been very helpful 😁

Yep, for sure.

My best guess is they are good bugs!

Sounds like you found the culprit!
@@GrowingInTheGarden Maybe Thrips.
I just lost my tomatoes to Spider Mites. I cut them back as much as i could, cropped the top, and put them in water to re grow them.
I like this perspective and will definitely adapt. Thank you!
Thank you for the helpful information you always provide!

Awesome teaching Angela. Thank you so much Sister ❤😊
Great information as usual, Angela! Thank you!

Generally seed bugs don't damage plants too much.
Water dish soap with apple cider vinegar is great
Your lavender is so beautiful! May I ask what kind is it? I kill every kind here in Florida💔

French lavender - lavender is easier here in Arizona because we are so dry - it doesn't like it too wet. Glad you liked the video.

I tolerate the leaf cutter bee damage - seasonal and doesn’t hurt the plants
°× 😊🙏 Thank you so much for all the tips Angela 🙏 °× Needed help with my parsley and Came across your Channel ✌️ °× Much Appreciated 👍

I'm so sorry.
Not only are we allowing beneficial insects to do their job, but we can save a lot of money not buying all those pesticides!

I bet your garden sounds amazing. Beautiful birds too!
❤
YES!
So many gardem groups I'm in:
AAAHH A BUG IT MUST DIE!!!!
Any bug gets that response. Frankly, it's horrifying.
So far I’m doing all the right things but them beneficials better get to stepping. My milkweed is covered with aphids.
Pretty common on milkweed - it usually resolves itself.
💚👍👍
What can I do with carpenter bees coming after my hollyhocks? Thanks for your guidance!
Cosmetic damage only - they are beneficial pollinators. I wouldn't worry about it.
Every single flower i have planted this year has died. Either from seed or transplants. Could you do a video just on flowers?
Here are 23 flower growing videos: ruclips.net/p/PLrnbT_X1WuhAYVRilmbtwYCmTXaXGAABq
This 1% caused 70% damage to my cabbage, tobacco, calalou, dill wtc.
So sorry. It does feel like more than 1%

I wouldn't knowingly take thrips out to your garden. Try to get rid of the thrips first.
@@GrowingInTheGarden Can you recommend a good method?
Hi Angela, what about termites? They seem to be in the entire yard in Sun City
My husband wanted to know what we should do? We are getting rid of the rotted palm tree and rotted oleander.
I would check with a termite professional.
I have a Jalapeno plant that I noticed had lots of plant ants on it. Inspecting it, I noticed it was because they were farming aphids.
Any recommendations?
You can wait and see if beneficials show up or spray them off with water a couple times a day for a few days
On a lighter mood ANGELA absolutly resembles a lady bug🕵🕵
My garden is plagued with crickets and scorpions at night! Should I leave them alone?
I wouldn't spray anything. My husband does hunt scorpions and black widows.
