I've been a big fan of these dev's ever since they made Rabi-Ribi. And at the time I regarded Rabi-Ribi as the BEST game in the Metroidvania genre. Now coming from the same people, TEVI has been a blast to play so far and definitely took everything Rabi-Ribi did and made it even better. And having fully voice acted lines was a treat. It's definitely taken Rabi-Ribi's spot for me for one of the best games [if not the best] in the genre out there. It's a damn shame a good chunk of people will miss out though because not everyone is into the cutesy anime/chibi art style, I personally really like the art style, it's just so freaking cute, and Tevi is new best girl. Her design is just wonderful.
No shortage of great indie games this year, huh?
indie games are the future of gaming, they keep getting better while aaa games keep getting worse. i still can't get over hollow knight releasing for $15. it's longer, more fun, more polished, and overall better than most aaa games that release for $60.
silksong is supposed to be at least 5 times the size of hollow knight, and i've seen people say $30 would be too high a price for silksong. that's the stupidest thing i ever heard, they could sell it for $60 if they wanted and it would still sell really good and be worth it. there's no way they should be selling a game that huge that took that much work for $15.
i'm guessing it'll be $30, maybe $40.
hollow knight is already by far the biggest metroidvania i've ever played, so one 5 times that size is ridiculous to think about, that's just massive.
What’s your favorite indies this year?
@@Hemogoblin117 Astral Ascent would be my no. 1.
@@Hemogoblin117 Welp...Tevi lol
Tevi is in a bundle w/ Rabi-Ribi and Last Command on Steam... sounds like an essential Winter Sale buy.
A lot of the sprites scream that the artist has some things in common w/ Nagatoro's mangaka.
Thanks for this review, it got me to give this thing a shot and 15 hours in I'm ready to call this one of the genre's best
Please do a review of compile's Gensei Suikoden Plus on the switch (out today)
Rabi-Ribi is one of my favorite games of all time, very excited to try Tevi.
It has so much charm
I loved this game. I hope it gets proper DLC treatment to iron out some of the plot points from the last few chapters.
Sounds like a great game i might have to take a look at this 👀 🤔
thanks for showing us... yup, I want the game. Hope it goes on a good sale when I eventually get enough money for it. :}
Between this and Astlibra Revision, I’m in side-scrolling RPG heaven!
Don't forget Afterimage.
I started playing astlibra 2 days ago without ever having heard of it. Just got to the swamp area and having a blast
@@Leaf__22 oh it gets waaaay better. I like how the game starts with you overpowered so you see what it will be like and then knocks you back to nothing.
@@blackswordsmanguts hadn’t even heard of that one. Good eh?
I was hesitating between buying on the Switch or on Steam. End up buying on both. My way of investing on a company I want to see it make more game.
Thanks for the review. Quite a statement!
Thanks!
Looks like maple story artstyle
I thought this too while playing. Even the fungus enemies have a maple story vibe. I love it
This is my GOTY 2023 for sure
Feel like the dialog and some of the voice work would wear on me and force me to quit early.
Gameplay looks solid tho
Loved the other game. This looks like a day one buy for me for my Steam deck!
I kinda want the game but on the switch its like $35 and thats a bit much for me. Unless the game runs at a locked 60fps. Not paying an extra $5 if the port has issues
I friggin loved Rabi-Ribi (owned it and have beat it on PC, PS4, Vita and Switch). I have no doubts that this spiritual sequel would be just as good and seems to be even better! (Haven't actually seen the review cause I wanna go blind to the game lol)
Whoa, that's great! I adored Rabi-Ribi and I didn't realize that this came out. I'll need to see if the Switch version runs fine, but if it does, it's a guaranteed buy. Thanks for the review!
Does it have English voice acting or Japanese only?
Japanese audio only
i swear her surname is not inaba
So many metroidvanias, you guys might want to do a top 10 metroidvanias of 2023 or something.
Let’s goooo thanks
I enjoyed what I played of the demo and jumped on its spiritual Prequel Rabi Ribi immediately during the sutumn ssle. I'm glad to see TEVI turned out to be such a fantastic game. I'll keep it on my radar once it goes on sale.
Rabi Ribi is one of the few games I e played multiple times.
hmm looks good.
Is this Pekora?
What stands out to me is the combat system its actually really deep you can call it devil may cry-ish
Raging about vigil as it has been on my wishlist for ages. I could have got it on sale a number of times but was waiting for a switch announcement. Had I known it would be removed from steam I would have downloaded it. Funny thing is if it does return to steam there will be a rush of downloads guaranteed lol. Might benefit the developers in the long run.
Man, I hope this gets a physical release for switch. Though, I don't think Rabi Ribi ever had a physical release..?
It did on ps4 and vita. Pm Studion is doing the console release they always do physical
Excellent, thanks!@@NoisyPixelNews
Port it to Switch please!
It is on Switch
Switch port begging is so common nowadays they even do it for games that are on Switch too 😂
Did you know Tevi means "ass" in guaraní? this will only be funny for one country though 😂
Love it
Wasn't expecting that score. You have piqued my interest...
Yay
Anubis boss kicks my ass and take loads of punishment
It's too bad that a lot of people actually come from rabi-ribi, and in their review compares it to rabi-ribi. I mean sure, the game are similar, i won't deny that. But they both have very good quality, and giving a bad review to tevi because you didn't find it as good as rabi-ribi isn't justified, as you are comparing a new game to a legendary game. But i think the review will only go up from the intial release. The true pleasure come after a few hours, when you start to master tevi's attack. And while at the first few hours i was like "yeah, it's good, maybe not as good as rabi-ribi, but definitively in the same tier, just a bit lower", after 50 hours i think it is clearly above rabi-ribi. Especially the combat system who is confusing at first (like in rabi-ribi, there are attacks that i haven't really used until 800+ hours), because al lthe attack do more or less the same damage, but still have a very good synergie between them. The only thing i am bit worried is the end-game lifespan. When you finished rabi-ribi, you had 3 more chapters until the true final boss, then you can loop a few times to get harder ennemy (though i might just been blind and didn't find the NPC in tevi that loop), and with dlc you can have 3 new bosses and the real true ending, or fight main bosses, but with different bullet-hell. It's always clear that you still have a lot to do even when you finished the game. In tevi, when you finish the story, the game more or less tell you "well, that's the end. Go around and find things or something". Implicitely you can restart with all max difficulty, and from the start it looks like i will have more challenge then the loop bosses of rabi-ribi. But i'm not really sure how much time it will take, and if after another option for more difficulty will come up. But for the end-game content, i think i just need to trust gemayue. From what i understand, rabi-ribi was in this state at first, and today he has more hours on tevi than rabi-ribi (which is impressive by the way, the guy have 8000 hours on his own games)
Maplestory!!
Cute ❤
Wow a 10
Great video, I hope all your wives have bold character designs.
English dub would be nice
Have to wait for another 20 days to play this in Europe. Ughhh!
It will be worth it!
Remnant 2 just dropped on gamepass now i have to buy this I don't have enough free time in my life 😅
Again no playstation release :-/ don’t get it why devs miss out a good opportunity.
game of the year? that's quite a stretch...
decent game in a genre filled with good games, i would say it's about an 7-8/10
way too much dialogue though, like an jrpg amount of dialogue, which really broke the pacing for me
After you beat the game, you unlock the ability to remove all dialogue. You also unlock a free roam mode which allows you to do things in any order.
i dont like the anime art style but ill take your word for it!
Lol this channel and its scores man.
Sorry we enjoy games
I’ve already given my GOTY (and ❤❤) to Dave the Diver
I could easily love this game, Metroidvania is my favorite genre. The thing is I fucking HATE chibi... this is a huge NO for me.GLHF to everyone else.
Just reached chapter 7 and am already burnt out on this game. Rabi Ribi was way better in my opinnion. The game has an uninteresting story with dark undertones that dont suit the games cutesy artstyle, would have been better to just keep the wacky vibe from rabi ribi. The story is also boring and convoluted with too much dialogue. Combat was fun at first but quickly becomes annoying, the turning point for me was when i unlocked the golden dodge mechanic, from there more and more moves kept being added on. This in combination with the sigil system where i had no idea what over half of them did meant i pretty much just face tanked each boss and button mashed the melee button and range attack. At least in the beggining combat was straightforward, hit the boss while dodging bullets, later on some of the attacks seem to be undodgable and your expected to do some sort of special dodge move that the game gives you but never really learned about. The bomb throwing mechanic is also a pain in the but and stops your gameplay flow, you have to stand at just the right spot in order to pitch the bomb where you want it to go, have fun spamming bomb pitches over and over again trying to land it into a small crevice. In the beginning they also give you a dive kick move that they show an break certain obstacles, this is never used anywhere else and ive already reached chapter 7. I am honestly just finishing the game cause ive already reached overthe halfway point and am currently finding if there is a true ending or not cause i have no plans to replay this game whatsover in order to unlock the true ending.
so obvious this is a paid promotion
I wish
40 hours?! I just don’t have that time to sink into it. Kinda wish devs would pull it back a bit and give us tighter 20-25 hour games. Maybe just me though
Then people would just whine about it being too short. Never satisfied…
I agree but I know I’m not the target demographic anymore. A wife, 2 kids under 4, and a career doesn’t leave a lot of free time. I used to loved 60+ hour rpgs but now I mostly stick to things I can pick up and play in short bursts.
Bro 40 hours is the perfect length.
@@buckchuckgaming597I’m in the same boat. I think we’re just old lol
Then just stop playing when you want to stop.
Cookie cutter looks better than this
NO
bing Bong! You've been caught using RUclipsr voice. Have you ever wondered why all of your positive comments seamlessly flow into a criticism, even if it's a non sequitur? It's because you're unwittingly parroting a vocal cadence that determines the flow of your analysis. Each up inflection flows into a down inflection, almost like you're in a hypnotic trance induced by the invisible demon, Algo Rhythm. Don't blend into the vapid video essay chorus; find a voice of your own.
What the hell…
@@NoisyPixelNews Just look up any other video essay and you'll hear yourself.
Bro. I’m a 34 year old man who owns his own home and does this on the side because I’m passionate about the gaming industry. I don’t have time to put on that influencer voice for you and pretend I’m excited about things when I’m not. How about you go watch those video essays? - Azario
@NoisyPixelNews Alright bro, just a heads up in case you haven't noticed.
What the fuck did I just read
Looks like a decent game but I think you're overhyping it a little.
Tell that to the 45 awesome hours I had playing it
Hoping for physical release like rabi ribi.
Me too. I have Rabi Ribi on Vita :)
Braindead comment. I'm about 25 hours into the game and it's amazing.
There are a lot of good games out there with similar battle systems and exploration / rpg elements. maybe not exactly metroidvanias but the ones with a similar feel to them. Personally I wouldn't call something 10/10 just because it's good, in my opinion it should be something to define the genre and likely enhance it to reach a different height.
THen again the author puts a lot of 9/10 to some visual novels that looks extremely generic to me, it's like something I will never play so his definition of 10/10 might be just a good game but for me it is perfection.
I think 40 hours is demanding too much from a metroidvania player.
This isn't a RPG.
Okay but it has character levels, stats, equipment crafting, and character customization, but it’s not an RPG. Cool.
Strong disagree! Almost all Metroidvanias are RPGs. Also 40 hours is perfectly fine if the game is good. The recent Afterimage also takes dozens of hours to complete. So does Astlibra. If you explore everything then Rabi Ribi can be considered quite lengthy as well.
