Another quality video as always Nick 👌I find on overcast days just before it goes dark is more productive on my local canal and on in summer dawn as the mist rises of canal is best for catching a big brute. I'm still learning everytime I go out on the bank, but always take something useful from your videos. Hands down best channel on RUclips......tight lines bud
That is so kind mate, thank you. Yes, I’m the same … always learning. Best to be like a sponge … I try and soak it all up!!!! I get better results at dusk, but prefer being out at dawn if that make sense! 👍👍👍
Excellent it’s good stuff. Maybe also check out AFW Knotable wire in 6 or 11lb. Just started using that and now I don’t need to heat and twist. It’s completely knotable. I use figure of 8 loop knots to attached a clip and a small swivel 👍👍
I imagine it all boils down to the season really. Late autumn nights can get quite chilly and at dawn the water is probably as cold as it's going to get whereas at dusk, after the often warmer daytime the water is closer to the optimal temperature for the day. In the summer the circumstances are the opposite and at dusk the water is still really warm whereas at dawn the water is closer to the optimal temperature after being chilled down all night.
As Autumn arrives and the boat traffic on my local canal subsides (not so much this year due to the Pandemic and the lack of foreign holidays) and the water clarity improves, dusk is the time for me.
Definitely dusk for me has I ve only been able to get out after work recently with a lot of success compared to fishing full days last yr seems to be all about short sessions late afternoon love the videos can always take something from them n always learning something 👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Exactly what I love to hear. Even if you take away something small then it’s all worthwhile. Check out the other comments too, they’re quite interesting. I love to learn from others! 👍👍👍
I've personally found in summer dawn is very productive but for every other season late sessions are the way to go. Sometimes the feeding window to catch a big perch is as short of 15 minutes at the point of light transition from evening to night-time. I have never had a big perch during darkness but a good few when it's only just light enough to fish without a headtorch
Exactly the same for me mate. It’s sometimes a very small feeding window when it’s half way between day and night. When the light levels drop but it’s not completely dark. 👍👍👍
Overcast dawn or a summer morning for me now on, summer afternoons with blaring sun, wind and air pressure makes them abit finnicky where as overcast dawn even summer the water seems a touch clearer and the shoals seem to be more responding too naturals, love figuring them out from the best channels here 💪🏻

@@Lifeonthebank yes , a 3 or 4 turn half blood , moisten it and then pull the tag to tighten the knot up slowly. To be honest it can be a bit fiddly lol . I did a similar small test on my local Perch stillwater through Nov. 6 sessions, fished dusk up to 1 hour into darkness, then returned the next morning for sunrise. I fish static baits. SCORES: DUSK = 6 Perch over 1.5 pounds, 3 were over 2. DAWN = BLANK every time
Thanks for sharing that. Interesting and very much what I’ve experienced too. I still bump into anglers that swear by dawn sessions, hence why wanted to dig into the subject a little! 👍
@@Lifeonthebank here's my take, I hope I have experience as I consider myself a specimen Perch fisher. Some simple facts to start .. we know they are sight based ambush predators. So lowering light becomes cover for them and it's a stimulant. That's why they get more active as the light drops .. they are STIMULATED to hunt and feed by the ambient light change. They will continue into the night if not fed quickly but it slows down as detection gets harder in the intense dark. In the morning as the light returns they get a small window BUT IF they aren't already fed (satisfied) so that's why I think yes they will feed at dawn but many are fed from the night before so it's less intense an instinct. I think this habit increases as they grow older and larger as fish become the main diet. Younger stripys will feed throughout the clock, faster metabolisms and they are looking to gain size in a race to be safer. So in summary, larger Perch in particular turn on to hunt at the end of the day and into the night as they usually have not eaten properly all day. Yes they will feed at dawn but its a matter of probability and thats higher at dusk. Often the 'edge' between a blank and a fish.
Brilliant Nick, bizarrely I'm out at either dawn or dusk depending on my time slots and work. Prefer Dusk but, strangely just a couple of weeks back, dawn looked bang on in dull conditions but didn't get a bit until the sun was right up?? Left me scratching my head . Well done mate 👏👏

That soft strand knot is a but complicated, the 10lb will hold very tightly with a 2/3 turn blood knot. I also Albright straight to braid and again it is extremely strong. Hook traces just use a perfection loop and slide the component on mid knot. All three knots are tiny.
Love the videos. Trying to bag some perch on the Lea this winter. It looks like you've got braided mainline tied to a fluro leader and then a wire trace?
2 turn blood knot is all you need to attach Esox 10lb wire trace, pull tag end and trace end evenly when tightening knot down no need for all the faff, p.s like your videos
@Life on the bank yes no kinks providing you pull not down evenly. leave a slightly longer tag end than usual makes it easier. Only 2 turns required, seems mad but it works 110%
Thanks for the quick reply really appreciate it .I can’t get hold of AFW only on e bay and it’ not the right breaking strain. I use the E-sox wire 10LB with crimps I guess what I am asking would it work with crimps all would they add to much weight
Great video. Do you mind if I ask what rivers/canals you are fishing and general location (not exact locations of course)? I'm having no luck whatsoever on the stretches of Lea Nav and GUC near me in Herts/North London. Would really help
Honestly your traces will be more reliable if you make the twists neater and tighter, it's so easy, if you make 1 twist first then set the wire tag end at very close to 90 degrees on your finger, grip between thumb and finger, a twizzle stick or forceps on the ring of the swivel and make turns untill you feel the whole tag end has run out.... the time It could fail could be your time for a pb, I've had personally and seen many traces done uptight slip 🎣😎

How long will you spend in one spot fishing Lures ? For perch... its a canal im gonna fish next.. but its like a big cul-de-sac (blocked at one end and runs up towards the right side and inwards) but iv seen big perch caught in the basin in the dead end so to speak,, iv also seen them as you can see down a wall at one inlet into clear water... I seen a bloke catch on a live bait and it was easily 3 pound! This was few years back tho.. but I'm gonna spend a few sessions there to try get a big pb perch. It's were the river aire meets the leeds/Liverpool canal just out of Leeds Centre. Big strong water inlet pushing out into it too. Perfect place for big perch I think. Iv been told knowing big perch are in the stretch helps so my plan is to fish it a lot for next couple months. There's different swims around the basin and along a long wall. Sorry for long winded message, unsure how long to dpend in each swim. Love your videos btw thanks 👌
It really does depend on the situation. If I’m ‘searching’ (ie new stretch, haven’t a clue where they are) then I’ll only have 5 or 10mins in each spot. However, if i suspect I’ve found them or the area looks prime then finesse methods spending much longer in far fewer swims (up to an hour or so in each). 👍
Dusk. Been tonight absolute disaster. Lost two lures and traces to hidden snags. What breaking strain do you use on the reel before your trace? I'm using 6lb but considering upping it to 8lb

Smiler 😆 brilliant!
😂😂😂 happy little chap! 🤣🤣🤣
Love the vid👌🏻
Thank you mate. Cheers for checking out the vid! 👍👍👍
Missing the videos but always keeping up on insta
Thanks for following on Insta mate. Will get as many videos out as I can. Thanks as always 👍👍👍
Gotta be dusk I get up early for work can’t get up early for pleasure as well 😁
Can be a struggle 😂 Dusk better for perch results imo anyway, although prefer the solitude of dawn. 👍
great video, whats the rod and reel setup
THANKS! The all-round perch lure rod / reel for me currently is the Korum Snapper ZT, 7ft 8. 2g - 14g. 1500 Korum Switch reel 👍👍👍
Sorry to bother you Sir,
What is the make and sizes of the swivel & link swivel you use in making up your traces please?
Thankyou
Phil
Gotta be dawn for me had 4 perch over 40cm this year
I’ve caught some proper lumps at dawn too. Sometimes leaves me with mixed feelings!! 🤔
@@Lifeonthebank yeah I think it depends on the area your fishing too but you can't go wrong with dusk or dawn tbh
Dusk as I feel you end on a high where as with Dawn you end when it going pants! 🤣
😂 yep, I’m with mate 💯 dusk for me!!! 👍🎣
Dusk. Been tonight absolute disaster. Lost two lures and traces to hidden snags. What breaking strain do you use on the reel before your trace? I'm using 6lb but considering upping it to 8lb
My braid is 11lb, leader is usually only 6, but sometimes step it up to 10 depending on the situation. I’m a dusk man too, definitely. 👍
@@Lifeonthebank I'm using a Korum Snapper 6ft 6 rod just got it. Will it take 8lb line. Don't want to over stress it. Also when is the fast net due out to buy 😀 cheers and keep up the fab videos learning loads 👍
Hi friends....good video I like 👍...
Thank you … really appreciated mate!!! 👍👍🎥
What rod/reel combo are you using pal?
Korum ZT Rod, 7’8, 3 - 18g. Switch 1500 Reel. 👌👍👍👍
Please excuse my ignorance but is night fishing itself not effective for perch?
I am able to fish from a garden that backs onto the Lea by Broxbourne Rowing Club and may try it. If so what methods might be favourite?
I do love these perch videos mate always a good watch...what size clip swivels are those as ive bought 2 lots and one was too small and the other too big 😂
Not sure off top of my head. I’ll take a look and get back to you mate. Check the breaking strain too, which is sometimes printed on the packets.
OK cheers buddy...dusk is definitely the best part of the day for me when it comes to perch 👍
Think it depends on the venue and time of year
Definitely seems to change depending on venue. You see a difference between autumn and winter?
@@Lifeonthebank yes deffinatly I find towards the end of the season middle of the day more effective
Definitely dusk for me
It’s definitely what the majority are saying mate 👍
What rod and reel do you use?
The rod is the new ZT lure rod by Korum Snapper. The reel is awesome. It’s called the Switch by Korum. Best lure reel they’ve done by a mile! 👌
@@Lifeonthebank Thank you for getting back to me I don't suppose you have any links for them? I noticed there isn't any under the video :D

Belter perch mate👍
i just go when i can be bothered... i suppose dusk is best for a specimen...but its the day out im more up for really.. the unexpected
I totally get this. You go when you can go! 👍
Dusk because I'm not a morning person 😃 Why is perch fishing a winter sport over there?
I fish with lures and through summer there’s too much weed around. Plus I think moving around in winter helps keep you warm so a nice way to fish at that time of year. Finally, for me there’s too many other species that feed well through summer to target. But ultimately there are no rules around this, Crankbaits in summer for chub and perch can be fun! Enjoy your fishing 😉👍
I definitely prefer dusk
Me too 👍
Dawn😉
Interesting. Spoken to loads of anglers that would agree with you!
So the magic words are "Nothing! Literally nothing!" Right?
Hi Peter, don’t totally understand but thanks as always for checking it out!!
@@Lifeonthebank That's what you said to "talk that one onto the hook", early in the vid.
Dusk 100%
Yep, 💯 agree mate! 👍👍👍
