    I have a different perspective on what happened with the Robert Hannsen affair, having been the CIA technical representative to the FBI during 1983 and had to work on occasion with Hannsen, who had to interface with me on technical issues relating to support from the CIA. During my tenure as representative to the FBI, I was approached by one of our Counterintelligence agents who showed me information that there might be a Soviet agent in the FBI, and since I was working with the FBI, I was chosen to deliver the bad news , this cause Hannsen to go ballistic and write a memo, in which he stated that I was interfering with his work. After going thru the archives, I found information that a project that Hannsen had worked-on had been compromised to The Soviets, but it didn't matter, since I was removed from the project and went on to other assignments. The rest is history.

    At 1:32:24 Brian Kelly's widow thanks Mike Rochford and the panel for publicly saying that the 'FBI was wrong' in pursuing Brian Kelly of the CIA as the suspected mole. And then, Mike R. confirms Mrs. Kelly's statement and repeats it again, the "FBI was wrong." I don't know if the FBI said it anywhere else. Though Mr. Rochford is not a polished public speaker, he holds a wealth of knowledge and is worth listening to.

      What if you believe your own setup is/will be compromised?
      If unknown person A has info that matches with existing agent B, then A has access to intel.
      Should your own agents betray you, you could lose A and B. Or just lose B..
      Deliberately not knowing seems a valid strategy. I note the Russians had Bob's prints off the bin bags saved. They might not have access to prints but they know this holds Ramons irl identity.
      Of course, your dangle point is also correct, and should it be known that an agency accepts paid intel without IRL attribution it sets up issues as you describe, plus deliberate "dangle bombing" to create friction, delays and confusion to an opponent's intel acquisition, like a intel based Slow Lorris attack.

      The agents get public recognition for winning a case. They recieve awards and federal funds when they can prove to the public that they are succeeding. This creates some competition between the two agencies. They have turf wars. There are also laws separating jurisdiction between the agencies. So, depending on which agent takes a personal interest in a particular criminal, they get personally invested in each case. They start taking ownership of the cases. They want to be reimbursed and praised for their labor on a case. Sometimes they get reimbursed for each case, right? They have review process every quarter of the year, right? Do you really think the agents aren't trying to catch a particular person because they know there's money in it? Corrupt agents will torture innocent people if they think their mark doesn't know enough to defend themselves. I can't believe you don't know this stuff.

    As to understanding Hansen and Ames, no matter how complicated they are and contradictions in their characters; they all had money as a factor and I think ego and feeling undervalued or unappreciated was also a factor in their treason. What I can't understand is how they could live or justify the fact that fellow agents risking their lives and helping our nation were no doubt tortured and killed because of their treason. Nor do I understand causing such high level damage to our nation revealing extremely damaging information to our country. Also why are military men given a death sentence for rape and these spies who the same as murdered fellow agents get prison sentences and even some get out after years or get true life in prison? It seems to me their crimes are worse. It doesn't make sense. These traitors should be considered the same as war criminals or serial killers. Also if you have to be willing to take a polygraph to be in these intelligence agencies, then why not make it law that they can be subject to audit and justification of all funds not explained by their salaries. And there has to be a test or way of weeding out those who appear susceptible to becoming spies. Ego problems and a person not feeling they have reached their potential and resent it. Maybe narcissism plays a part in their character. I think talking to family and friends being interviewed could weed these people out.

      Its a philosophical argument that no one can win. Just like lawyers, priests have obligations of confidentiality. There is a reason for that obligation. I think Hansen's wife should have been prosecuted for treason too. She had to be aware from her husband and the news about all these agents being arrested and killed in Moscow and figured out she should come forward. The priest and probably the Catholic church knew also and at the very least should be fined. If they are required to report child abuse, they should also be required to report treason that endangered our nation and caused the death of several agents.

He's obviously embarrassed having been hoodwinked, bamboozled, deceived, duped, and made a fool of my a young man who had only been an FBI agent for 3 years. What amazes me is Hanssen actually walked into the Russian embassy to offer his services with apparently no fear of being seen.

    • @MurrayJoe
      @MurrayJoe 6 лет назад +1

      No, Robert Hanssen didn't walk into the Russians embassy, he wrote a letter to a diplomat and inside that letter was another letter to the KGB officer in charge of counter intelligence. The Russians didn't even know who Hanssen was nor even who he worked for the CIA, FBI or NSA. As Mike Rochford said, the Russian didn't care, they trusted him because of the information he gave them and he had supplied them with the encryption keys, also Hanssen's information backed up the information Aldrich Ames was giving and vice versa. The KGB told there agents not to go near him or linger around the drop zone, they didn't want upset him or compromise him.
