  • Let's take a look at Palladium's Robotech RPG the Invid Invasion. We will also do a deep dive into the into the rulebook. This book is my favorite Palladium Robotech Rulebook because of my love of the series.

Loved invid Invasion. Was a great setting for an RPG I 100 perceny agree. Thanks for taking the time to cover this!

I totally agree, my players always preferred to play during the Invid invasion, they liked the idea that they did not have to be beholden to a government or military commanders and they loved scavenging for weapons, ammo and mecha. We had some fantastic adventures some of which even involved space combat with the Invid which is cool because there are some cool space craft as well as the normal mecha.

So this was where the mini missiles first appeared before becoming the main heavy weapon in Rifts. The Sabre mech reminds me of my favorite heavy cyborg from Triax, the Gold model which also had twin retractable forearm blades.

Agreed. This was always my favorite generation to play in, and the supplement "The Return of the Masters" allowed us to introduce characters to and from the REF series. G-95 factory satellite became a repeat scenario /character in our campaigns

It was really fun to drop Robotech characters and mecha into Rifts. Soon we will be getting almost all of the Macross series on Disney+. I've always loved the Palladium rule set. It was precise yet smooth with lots of room for nuance. All of their different RPGs were great. TMNT, Beyond the Supernatural, Ninjas and Superspies, Palladium Fantasy... Adventures would last sometimes weeks...

Played these 25 years ago. Really enjoyed the paladium roleplaying system and love Robotech.

Robotech RPG was the first tabletop RPG I ever played. Invid Invasion indeed was the best of the three sagas for tabletop RPG purposes but having said that Robotech games felt somewhat limited when it comes to variety and the system was oversimplified.
The whole MDC (mega-damage-capacity) system always seemed somewhat wonky....you can always argue that if you wear MDC armor then you can run your character off a 100 foot cliff, fall and not die when you hit the ground because falls do SDC damage. I think that if they wrote rules for mecha similar to those in Maximum Metal expansion for military vehicles in Cyberpunk then it would've been far better.
    Suggestion for current players:
If you're playing a veritech pilot, see if you can get an old style Valkyrie veritech fighter instead of Alpha Fighter or Beta Fighter - granted they carry less firepower, have fewer bonuses, less MDC (as I recall) but they run on nuclear power (enough fuel for 20 years) instead of protoculture which seems to always run out. This means fewer issues with looking for energy supplies and invid can't track your protoculture signature nor do they get bonuses targeting protoculture sources when they fight you.

Mixed groups were always easy to run, even in Macross and Southern Cross (outpost duty where full squadrons were not needed was my go to approach.)
    Cyclone Rider was by goto.
Looking forward to your take on New World Order and Strike Force.

Giving shoulder mini missile launchers to the "battler" cyclone (scott and rand variant) was a concession made by palladium, as those variants never fired missile from the front (motorcycle mode) or from the shoulders (armor mode) during the show. The only missile they had were the forearms launcher that scott had.
Only the "saber" variant used by Lancer had the mini missile launchers on the shoulder/front

Wow! Are you serious! I thought the battlers and saber had shoulder missiles. Sees like the Saber is OP.

@@RichardtheDungeonCrawler yes. I am serious. In the show, neither Scott or Rand use it.
The new iteration of the RPG Made by Strange Machine Games take a correct approach to this missile System.
However, in the show, we see for both Scott and Rand that a targeting System Is deployed from the shoulder. But the saber Is also show using this targeting System.

The Beta fighter was capable of delivering the Alpha/Beta combined unit into orbit. Invid Invasion was a great setting, but I tended towards The Sentinels because it was like Robotech and Star Trek combined.

Agree. My first Character was a Garudan (male) fighter. It was really fun to play (roleplaying wise, it was a mess the mechanic aspecto of the game).

@@exequielfri1352 True, Palladium's system was not particularly well suited for some things, but every group has their own house rules to smooth things out.

In the Invid Invasion I played a type of Don Quixote character held over from the Second Edition who traveled around in a APC camouflaged with piles of garbage, so the Invids would ignore it.

Invid Invasion is great, and I thought Robotech II the Sentinels was great too. Did you ever get that or the REF Field guide?

Too bad the Alpha & Beta couldn't combine for a bigger robot. The Invids were a cool alien race.

@@RichardtheDungeonCrawlerI liked the characters and the Mecha, especially the Logan, it has a unique look, we usually played Invid Invasion, so I would play a survivor of the last war, and, yes Cyclones are cool.
