    I have nothing but respect for Robert Osborne who was much more than a TCM host. Thank you to Sally Field for sharing her thoughts about Bette Davis and her timeless movie, Now Voyager. I myself love this movie and watch it at least once a year .

    I've always loved the old black and white movies and the range Bette Davis had made her one of my favorite actresses, if not my favorite!! Her movies always had me glued to the TV set because her characters fit her talents so perfectly!! Now, Voyager is one of my favorites of hers!!

    Harumph. Why dump on different styles of acting? Why not just appreciate everything for being of its own time?

    I guess Sally Field has conveniently forgot that before SHE became the respected Oscar winning actress she is today, she once flew amongst the birds as a flying nun, and kicked the beach sands as a Gidget.
    Thumbing a pretensious nose at a trailblazer doesn't make you interesting. It makes you a "Method" bore.

    A great performance holds up in any decade. Orson Welles has said the greatest screen actor was james Cagney who gave it his ALL on every take. and was brilliant...check out Davis' turn as the Cockny waitress Mildred...any actress including Sally has a long road to travel to even touch the hem of Bette Davis.

    Very stylish and romantic movie, and thus somewhat dated. But as film, marvelous. The last scene is exquisite (in spite of the cigarette allure). And loved what Sally Field said.

    Have NO idea what Fields is babbling about...DAVIS is simply fascinating in Voyager...THATS WHY it holds up..thats why its still brilliant...watch the LETTER SALLY dear....and watch a mesmerizing tale of lies and deceit.done BRILLIANTLY.by Miss Davis..how she weaves her tale of lies..THEN must finally confess.the truth...simply fascinating...THOSE were golden yeard

    TIL Sally Field has very limited taste. The movies of Bettie's era had real glamour, real theater, real drama. I tire of all the grim dark realism of Field's time.

      And Sally has so many over the top moments - from her performances to her award speeches - very ironic to hear her describe Miss Davis in ways many would describe Miss Field.

    • @Kris9kris
      @Kris9kris 3 года назад +1

      What Sally Field said is absolutely true, kind of axiomatic, if you will: you simply can not overlook the tastes of a particular era.
      The benefit of hindsight blinds us in a way in recognizing just how different people were a decade ago. We might as well be aliens to them with our contemporary sensibilities.
      In fact, it’s something that is echoed/summarized perfectly by Ian McKellen in the Dick Cavett Show, saying that what e. g. Henry Irving did in the late 19th century: that would move people to tears in that particular era, at the height of the British Empire, would elicit roars of laughter today. His notion of reality reflected/corresponded to the reality of the times in which he lived in.
      Bette Davis always insisted even later in life that acting should be a little bit “larger than life”, which is a remnant of this particular stage tradition. It’s the age-old argument between traditional and method acting. Nowadays, all the big-name actors represent the latter category, because that’s what *the majority* of people want to see. Anything other than becoming the character with all your fibres of being would seem ungenuine and melodramatic. Not to me personally, I’m an old Hollywood nutcase, but to jour average joe.
      This kind of shift in perceptiveness is reflected in other areas in filmmaking too. I mean, imagine a Korngold score or a Max Steiner score rooted in the 19th-century European common practice accompanying one of those capeshit movies or Game of Thrones. People would be more confused than Elena Ceaușescu when asked about basic chemistry.

    • @thomstephens
      @thomstephens 3 года назад +4

      @@Kris9kris so correct! Sadly Ms. Field doesn’t recognize how much of her acting is like that of Miss Davis but in a later era. The irony is hysterical - “You like me!! You really, really like me!!!” Or from Steel Magnolias - “why??? Why?!!” She is cut from the same cloth but less of a personality and 2 Oscars - just like Miss Davis. She spoke quite foolishly in this interview because she does exactly what Bette did but doesn’t realize it.

    Field's Oscar is for Norma Rae; one of the most forgettable, dreary films/performances ever. The nerve of her to get on a pedestal about Bette Davis. I can't eyeroll hard enough

    Meryl Streep does a much better evaluation of Bette Davis's acting prowess for TCM. No offense toward Fields BUT.... Given Meryl's brilliance, I am much more prone to take her opinion far more seriously.

    I always get a kick out of these actors especially post 1960's who condescendingly critique the Patriarch's and Matriarch's of acting of the the Golden Era. Yes the acting styles were different and true at times melodramatic...many of whom were stage actors and were accustomed to projecting their acting in a more grandiose way in order to trigger an emotional reaction to a live audience. While it may be said that "method actors" are the more skillful, I'm not so sure. Artistically, there was something far more beautiful and poetic in the acting style of "Thespians" pre-dating the 60's, I'll take Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Oliva De Havilland over the likes of Meryl Streep, Sally Field or Glen Close ANYTIME of the day.

      Sybil (won an emmy for one of the most challenging and exhausting roles an actress has ever taken on in television and film), Norma Rae, Absence of Malice, Places in the Heart, Murphy's Romance, Steel Magnolias, Forrest Gump, Lincoln. Sally Field hasn't been thought of as just a flying nun in decades. Her acting ability is right up there beside Bette Davis, Kate Hepburn and countless others from Hollywood's golden age. She is one of the most beloved and respected contemporary actresses of all. Two oscars, 3 emmys, 3 golden globes. Yes, we like her, right now and always, we like her.
