Thanks so much for the comment, SBG!! I love watching your videos, many of which inspired me to be creative with this particular Mojave II build. :) I'm looking forward to the next one for sure!! Cheers!
Excellent video that showcases the capability of the Fusion SE. I love your truck as well it is awesome. It has been recommended that I upgrade my Redcat Gen 7 Pro to this system for better performance as I had been talking about getting the Hobbywing 1080 ESC to replace the 40 that comes stock. I wonder if upgrading to the brushless system will mean changing the stock plastic spur gear and plastic gears in the transmission. Still lots to learn and thank you again for sharing.
Thanks so much! Ironically, I actually changed the metal spur gear that came with this truck (eBay purchase) back to the stock plastic spur gear, because the metal pinion gear on the metal spur gear was crazy loud and very high pitched, like nails on a chalkboard to my ears. My transmission is fully stock, so no issues there. Metal gearing would theoretically last longer, but I don't think the investment will result in a noticeable performance gain. For things like that, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. :) I'm certainly no expert in this hobby, but the longer I tinker around with hop ups and performance upgrades, I try to scrutinize every dollar spent and maximize the performance gain per dollar. This has helped me whittle down my upgrade money to the tires, brass, ESC, motor, and transmitter, probably in that order. With the Fusion SE combo, it takes care of two birds with one stone. The HobbyWing 1080 ESC is a great component! I use it in my OG Element Enduro Sendero truck. It made a big difference with wheel speed control, and it made an even bigger difference when I purchased a better transmitter. It's very smooth and quiet, certainly a TOP VALUE in the hobby. While I prefer the smooth action of the Fusion SE, I don't discount the performance of a [good] brushed ESC and motor, especially if you're looking for scale realism and life-like challenge. However, for the camera and just all around visual enjoyment, the brushless combo takes the cake! :) There are more expensive units out there, but again, it boils down to performance per dollar, which is why I chose the Fusion SE for all-around performance. Thanks again for your post!!
Great explained video 👍 we have a few Fusion SE in our rigs now and the performance is night and day. Its one of the first mods we make even before tyres (used to be our first change) as then we can run the trucks on a very stable platform and make tweaks to see what and where to make changes next. Thank you for sharing ❤
Yes, it's one of the best all-around upgrades you can make to an RTR and also a custom truck without breaking the bank. It gets me more curious about the AXE series FOC motors and ESC's, at least for the sake of engaging content. I suppose those are more application specific for the more serious hobbyists. :)
@@crawlingonallfoursRC I got that one second hand "like new" and I used it once at an indoor course. It needs a fusion pro before I try crawling with it again. Thanks.
Greetings from across the Pond!! :) Go for it! This motor is one of the best upgrades for the money IMO. It's not their top-tier product, but it takes A LOT of the benefits of their high-end features and packs it into an affordable package.
Just picked up a fusion SE myself and it's such a huge improvement compared to brushed motor/esc. I remember playing with smaller pinion gears to improve the start/stop stalling at low speed, but the gobs of torque at low RPM with these new generation motors makes pinion gears selection less important. Great video, and channel. Look forward to more.
Thanks for the comment!! :) The original RC4WD 20T motor was actually pretty awesome. It was quiet, smooth, and offered a lot of torque. I believe the Reedy ESC was the weak link. I will likely use the 20T motor on another rig. Although, the Fusion motor is so affordable it's hard not to buy another one! LOL
I have a brush motor and it’s just as smooth as hobby wing fusion. It’s got the ISDT 90 it’s belt driven with the Holmes hobby crawl master. And gen8 portal axles runs smooth as butter and a cheap axial clone scx10.2 transmission
Sounds delicious!! :) Belt drive?? I JUST told another commenter that I was very interested in the Holmes Hobbies brushed products! I was concerned that my video might come off as too generalized against all brushed motors, bc I know not all motors are created equal. I'm a Gen8 fan; it was between a Gen8 and an Element Enduro Sendero a few years ago and I chose the Sendero (which I still love!), but I'd like to get a Gen8 with those portals. Thanks for the tip!!
I always use isdt esc90 or 70 and holmes motors its a combo you cant beat and i run the1800se and i prefer brushed in my trail rigs and brushless in my lcg and i cant tell the difference between the two
I appreciate that. :) I do like to keep it lighthearted, but I have definitely noticed that my product/narration videos have had the most views compared to my other videos. I certainly don’t want to overdo the “amusement”. Thank you again for the compliment; I will keep that in mind in the future.
How many amps were each? I have a kit and an rtr and the difference between the two of them is night and day also. Still not a brushless but not all brushed are equal
That's a great question. If your question is referencing the ESC's, the Reedy spec is 40-amp (which actually wasn't bad for the original Element Enduro RTR) and the Fusion spec is also 40-amp, which seems typical for most intermediate components like these. Each motor type (all things being equal) definitely has it's pros and cons. The 21-turn RC4WD motor that I first installed was relatively quiet, smooth, and had lots of torque. Paired with the Reedy ESC, it was stop and go over while going slow over obstacles. However, it was awesome running on trails and there is a smooth throttle response as you apply input at higher speed. The brushless motors (this is my 2nd one) are more direct with their power output, like it's on/off. I can see why some people don't like brushless. For me, I like to capture my crawlers on camera and I think brushless (with FOC) gives the best bang for the buck. I am dying to try some of the Holmes Hobbies @holmeshobbies brushed products. I have another project in the near future, so maybe I will hit him up. :)
Very good video and great explanations. I also ride an enduro, the V2 kit. What chassis did u use on this build? The truck sits lower and it looks like an aluminum chassis.
Thanks!! I tried to pack as much information as I could without being too boring. :) I'm running the Interceptor chassis, but I'm thinking it's the stainless steel set. Since I bought it used, I'm not 100% certain. Thanks for posting!! :) :) :)
That's a great question. I don't have a small-scale crawler yet, so I haven't researched this. I know I've seen 380 and 280 brushless motors before. I don't believe they have ESC's contained within the same can, though.
Someone knows. :) LOL Actually, you CAN turn it off in the programming. It's designated as the first option as "RPM / throttle matching". You can enable or disable it. If you're more for the challenge, then disabling it will cause it to function just like any other sensored brushless motor / ESC with a 1:1 throttle experience. If you come up to an obstacle the vehicle will slow or "stall" and you'll have to adjust your throttle as you climb over the obstacle. The results will test your skills and be more realistic compared to the smooth controlled action of FOC. Personally, I would never have the need to turn it off other than seeing the difference in performance, which could probably make for a good follow up video review. To be honest, FOC is a little bit of a cheat if you're looking for scale realism. However, the performance is AMAZING, and from the videos I've both seen and also created myself, I think the results of FOC look great on camera, so that's what I prefer. Thanks for posting the question!!
Not sue I have ever had a brushed setup stall in my life ? Good esc will do the job. Using 45turn with 3 cell lipo has been a perfect so far. Have used brushless rigs before never really felt a huge gap in performance honestly. 3 cell gives you all the wheel speed. The 45t motor will get that torque where its needed : ) That being said fusion setup is on sale for less than 100cdn right now. Hard to pass up !!
Interesting. The motor I originally used was 21-turn on 3S and I was still experiencing the "stall". Granted, the performance was more "scale", so I still give it points for realism. I know all motors aren't created equal; I would actually like to get a brushed system from Holmes Hobbies in the future. My Enduro Sendero truck has the stock Reedy 5-pole motor (it's quiet!) and I had replaced the Reedy ESC (from the video) with a Hobbywing 1080 which is a great combination. It performs wonderfully with 3S. The movement is very smooth. Thanks for the great comment!! :)
@@crawlingonallfoursRC Oh the 5 pole sounds like fun. I have always found 35-55turn the optimum for hard rock crawling with 4.5+ pound rigs... paired with 3 cell of course. THis video really helped my finally try out brushless, waiting on my 1800 fusion now for the capra : D
