I have been on five cruises over the past two years. Two were solo. My wife and I will be celebrating our 34th anniversary in Alaska on another cruise in the Spring. But my wife is not nearly as interested in travelling as I am and unlike me, she isn't retired. let me be clear, the _only_ thing stopping me from travelling solo a _lot_ more than I do is money. Solo is awesome. I eat alone, I enjoy the entertainment alone, I go ashore alone, and I love it all. If I had the cash, I'd be off on another adventure in a flash. Let me add that I have a cognitive impairment that causes me to be forgetful and easily lost, so I don't wander far in ports without taking precautions. Like downloading maps on my cell or sticking with group excursions and cautioning the leader of the group to keep an eye on me should I wander. As for getting lost on a cruise ship, that's actually kind of fun.
I did my first solo cruise last Spring. A few months after my wife's death. I realized, too late, that I'd not been taking advantage of some of the solo specific things available. I'm not really the type to go to a solos morning coffee, but I need to over come that. I didn't take advantage of shows as I like to linger over a late (7:30ish) supper. I need to look into early show times. Lots of things like that to make a better cruise for me. My next cruise is right after Thanksgiving this year. A Transatlantic on a tiny ship. Chris and I did one on the sister ship in '19 and loved it. Now to see how I feel about doing it solo. Thanks for all the suggestions, David
Thank you for sharing---those are great tips, and it goes to show that we can look around at what we like or need, and try to make adjustments so we can enjoy our cruise our way. I hope you enjoy your solo cruise coming up! Thank you so much for commenting.
My first (of 3) cruises was a solo Disney Cruise Line trip (I'm a big Disney fan). I did it to prove to myself that I could live/travel solo. Great trip!!! You offer great advice. Thanks!!!
I'm about to do my first solo cruise in July 2024. I booked it last March and I am both excited and nervous. However, ultimately I'm ready for this new adventure.
Thank you, this is excellent, well thought-out advice (esp eg taking account whether your friends want to be deluged with messages etc 😂). Inspired by various RUclips cruise vloggers, I am taking my first cruise in a few weeks (solo) and have just watched all your solo tips videos in quick succession. They’ve been very useful and encouraging. Much appreciated!
@@realestatebykemi I think the only requirement is that all pieces must be able to fit through an xray machine like they have at an airport. But I would check your cruiseline's website for sure. For example, here is Royal Caribbean's www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/questions/onboard-luggage-policy
I’ve booked a 7 day solo cruise. I’m ecstatic! I do worry about safety tho. I’m really street smart so I’m hoping I won’t run into anything that seems sketchy after I do it. Ie… taxi rides, etc.
I appreciate the thought process that inspired this video. Hopefully people watching will have some ideas to make traveling as a solo easier. One question though…often, as I watch your videos, you refer to your traveling as ‘we’ rather than I. So, I was wondering, do you actually travel by yourself or are you traveling alone and making arrangements to meet someone who is traveling alone on the same trip or are you traveling with your friend or spouse? Guess I’m wondering how you define traveling alone. To me, traveling alone is having to navigate all the planning, transfers, managing opportunities to make friends, etc on a cruise. I really do appreciate that you offer a solo perspective as an exclusive channel. I think it is needed. Thank you for all you are doing thus far.
Thank you so much! I think I only used "we" in my Mediterranean cruise blog. In that case I traveled with my son and we had separate cabins. I don't consider that solo cruising. And my videos will sometimes include videos and information about cruises taken with family. My channel emphasizes the solo cruiser but will also include general cruising information for everyone, I hope, and I can't wait to share some of my Alaska cruise adventures which I took with family. Ordinarily when I talk about solo cruising I mean I am traveling entirely by myself. That's my personal definition of Solo Cruising, stepping onto the ship without knowing a soul on board. And as you said, managing every last detail by yourself. I know others define it differently and that's perfectly fine… Some people refer to themselves as solo cruising When they are on a cruise with friends but each person has their own cabin. And some people travel together but spend all their time doing different things and some people see that as solo cruising. My definition is the same as yours, traveling entirely alone.

The biggest concern is paying the solo supplement price. Paying double the price is just ridiculous and expensive

I've done a few Disney solos myself. Love Disney! Glad you enjoyed your trip.

Congratulations! Very excited for you. Please come back in July and tell us how much you enjoyed it. Where are you going?

The loneliness will just keep coming even I make friends on ship, which is what I feel, but at least I make friends, and I do feel happy about it.
Thank you for sharing 😊
Excellent tips! Much needed! 🙏🏽
Do cruise lines have a size limit on suitcases like airlines do?
Thank you!

For safety reasons women traveling by themselves should always say 'we' to make people think they are not alone.

Cost is my concern.
I want to lay around, sunning and eating for a week. Read, knit, drink coffee and eat desserts.
Sounds like the perfect cruise!
Money. Looking for solo pricing.
