Great tips, the mayapples are also my go to indicator for when to get out and look. I hope that you can get out and find some more this season! Springtime for us here in NC has already come and gone
I live in Southwest Michigan the county of Ottawa. Every year here is scarce and a very hard hunt. If we end up with a dozen for the entire season, we feel satisfied. Because there is years that we only find a couple. We never get the baskets full like some places I’ve seen in Michigan.
Sounds to me like your identifying ashtrays? I am definitely not a tree expert either. But the ash tree I think of as poplars tree. And they have grooved gray bark at the bottom, which turns smooth, going up and pure white. Very tall, majestic trees.
From roughly Remus to Thompsonville is a good area to look. Mesick has a morel festival. Also, Clare to Houghton Lake, and from Kalkaska to Petosky. Ask the DNR where they have done clear cuts about 15 to 20 years ago. Aspens are usually the first trees back in a clear cut. In southern Michigan, expect more white morels and look for dead elm trees. I also heard dead ash trees support white morels.
Where at in michigan? Im in barry county michigan. I find a few thousand every year and everyone i no if they find 30 a year thats a good amount for them im not exaggerating i have photos to prove it but what im saying is i find them by the hundreds in cherry trees that have autumn olive bushes in the cherry woods and locust trees are also mixed in like u said i do alot of walking dont get me wrong im spending 3 4 5 6 hours everytime i go out but its worth it just figured id guve u a little tip idk if they have alot of cherry trees like that up north tho there not cherry trees that produce actual cherrys but its the cherry tree that has the darker rough looking bark good luck take a look at my little video I posted on my channel and the photo I have on my background
Yeah I’ve been smashing them, I got my limit three nights in a row. I catch them out of Lake Huron so I get to keep eight and they only have to be 13 inches+. If you catch them out of the river or inland lake, you can only keep five and they have to be 15 inches+.
Why is it a "white-black" thing with you brother or is it sister! Peace -- I'm just talking crap so don't pay no attention to me, I've got nothing of value to say here
Glad to have you in Michigan brother! Hope you've enjoyed your time!
Try using a leaf blower will clear out area to find them :)

I agree about the timing of morels and mayapples, but I have never found morels around mayapples. Anyone else?
Of course you will find them around Mayflowers...lol
The only thing we found so far is a Hognose snake.
