My name is Danielle Romero, and all my life, I have romanticized Louisiana.
Growing up in New York, it represented a place where I could step back the sepia-toned life of my great grandmother, Lola Perot, who died before I was born.
Now, it was time to go back to Louisiana--although I had no idea what the truth would be or what questions to ask---who was Lola really? Who were we?

Years ago this old man met an Asian looking man. This was in a community college in Brooklyn. We asked what part of China he was from. He said, "I'm not Chinese. I'm russian." We all said bs, cleatly he was Chinese. He explained that he had been Russian for many generations and spoke the language. I remember being angry. On the subway ride I was wondering why the anger. I realized that I was the issue. We want to put people in nice little boxes. Makes us feel better about ourselves, I guess. This guy just wouldn't fit into a nice definition. But I was the problem. Checked my attitude and we went on to become good buds. Here is the really bad part. I should have known better. I arrived in the US as a little boy. No English language skills. I just saw an interview with Marisa Tomei, who is half Italian, I think, and she said that when she got into acting, she was turned down for lots of parts because she was "too ethnic". She had to do some research to figure out what that even meant, because she said she wasn't raised with a very strong sense of being Italian. There's no surprise that her first big part, that got her a lot of attention and awards, was as the daughter of an Italian-American mobster! He then said anyone who doesn't have a majority percentage of Sub-Saharan DNA is white. When I told him my DNA results are approx 10% Native American, 40% Sub Saharan African and 50% European , he couldn't explain why the same things that make him white don't apply to me. This is a great question. I have one for you (no hostility either!) Do you believe we should continue to call all asians "yellow people" or native americans "red people"? I am quite proud of my European ancestry and have done a lot of work learning about my italian side, with more to come. I hope more people connect to their ancestry.
Crayon colors should not be the way we see others or ourselves. The US Supreme court struggled to define white over and over again, and that is because white is neither a country, not race, nor ethnicity.
ETA: If folks want to use crayon colors, that is fine, but it seems sad to erase your actual ancestral culture and lump them all into one faux-homogenous grouping. My Italian ancestry is nothing like my Irish side. @ovan-ud2fs

      @dantesabatino5429 7 месяцев назад +1

@TomDonovan-ud2fs Ironically you’re erasing diverse European cultures by generalizing them all as a color. Furthermore she’s right that racial categories are too amorphous to define as many dark South Europeans aren’t perceived as white from Italy and Spain, while loads of Middle Eastern celebs like Dr. Oz(Turkish) are perceived as White.

    • @dantesabatino5429

@TomDonovan-ud2fs Sure there can be colloquial definitions of anything but that invalidates the supposed reality of race which therefore doesn't exist both genetically and visually. North Africans, South Europeans, and South Asians(India) don’t resemble our respective continents.

This is exactly why so many of our ancestors got obsessive about claiming their own identity. If you admit you have ancestry of another race, even if you could pass a otherwise someone thinks you're obsessed with denying the other side. If you admit the oppressed side has had problems, someone on one side thinks its an act to pretend you give a crap about them & wants proof you would die for them or wants you to go away & stop associating with them altogether & someone on the other side thinks you're a traitor. Everyone else without a dog in the fight is suspicious & thinks you're up to something shady. What the hell are you supposed to do, then?

The most powerful thumbnail to me was the lil Italian Girl with the Title "No Desk For The Dago!" It was like the Norman Rockwell Portrait of Ruby Bridges. That video got 50k views and I'm sure it inflamed many . I feel many Americans are aware of our nation's racial strata system and want their identity group to be seen in the highest , meaning white.

In Germany we have a long lasting discussion about how guilt and responsibility is connected to what our forefathers did. Of course this discussion focuses on the time of the Dritte Reich, but there are obvious overlaps with the discussion about race in the US, also with colonialism.
However, my personal experience tells me that these topics are very complex and difficult to discuss in terms of getting out a productive exchange of opinions. In many cases it´s about the difference between guilt and responsibility. It´s unethical to built up a bogey by telling people that the other side likes to implement restrictions on you in order to carry the can for crimes of your ancestors. That´s not the case. However, there is responsibility for a society to learn and develop, using experiences of stuff working well just like stuff that didn´t. It´s critical to maintain exact definitions of all we talk about in order to make sure that there are no misunderstandings as well as no bogeys or rethorical campains, which is, unfortunatelly, a very complicated thing to do.
Found your channel interesting. Alle the best from Germany!

Ignore these idiots. You are doing great work in researching your history and telling us all about not only your family, but about what was going on at the time you are looking into. "Race" is a very interesting topic and some people would rather use it as an excuse to divide us instead of bringing us together. And I wanted to add, that people who say that the expression "colored" is derogatory, they don't know the history of that term. My grandmother used that as a respectful way to refer to an African American before the term "black" became popular. I even knew a woman who was from he Caribbean who preferred being called "colored," to being called "black." She was very, very adamant about it too. I love what you're doing. The problem is that people in the Americas are, unfortunately, walking around in a state of delusion when it comes to their ancestral lineages and socially constructed groups in the Americas. The Americas, where the vast majority of the modern population with foundational roots, regardless of their appearance, are descended from some combination of European, African, and Indigenous peoples, if not all.
Even when presented with information that clearly contradicts their nation's ideas of "race," people just can't seem to shake off the conditioning and reject the appearance based lies. We say it's nuanced but is it, or are we just doing the same old discriminatory things our ancestors did? Don't internalize the projection. Much love to you cuz.

I find your audio/videos very informative, thoughtful treatises, and heartfelt, so I can see why some find offense and "vent out", as the truth...Even yours...Can be a painful reminder for others to recognize within themselves and their families that "history" within families is not so cut and dry...As most families do have a few "surprises" and not all is as it...Or they seem to be, and devastation to one's egos and identity, are at the heart of it. But the truth is the truth, no matter how hard it is to accept and live with. But your strength and perseverance will carry you through no matter what and let others deal with their own acceptance...Or non-acceptance, as it is their own problem and struggle. Some people can be so nasty when fearing the truth about themselves and their family history and identity. And P.S.- on single drop or acknowledgment of any Black blood can send other people and their family historical beliefs into paroxysms of panic to full meltdown....As they try so hard to hate and invalidate you here. Peace

Yes and you have also explored these things within the context of looking deeply into prejudice and cruelty within the society you live in and the effect in the generations of these things - how p people tried to make improvements on their lives meaning they were often forced toc conceal their heritage and adopt identities for their children.
In dealing with the power of prejudice you disturb those who are unsure of their own place or heritage. You are creating an open exploration of contentious ideas. With great respect.
Families exploring heritage also discover members who were born out of wedlock or who were raised by grandparents unknowingly. These issues also have intense reactions. 😳

    Hi.
Events and issues you discussed on your channel are common experiences especially for Black Americans.
I am glad that you’re discussing these topics from your family history.
I am from mix race heritage, that includes a large chuck of European genetics. I shared that only to give you one of my foundations to my perspective.
I have families from the dark to the white complexions with many stories.
The following is for your viewers FYI:
    1. Nearly all or most Black Americans have various (wide range) degrees of African and European genetics.
    2. Technically, Black Americans are generally at least BI racial. It could be Bi, Tri, Quad races or more.
    3. Bi racial doesn’t automatically mean half and half.
    4. Obama was likely half (50%) and half (50%) because his father (reportedly) was 100% African and his mother was (allegedly) 100% White.

Just remember that most people are idiots who blindly accept what they're told. Color is irrelevant. I'm an amateur historian and also among the first families who came from the other side of the pond, in 1610, on my mama's side. I'm quite sure I'm Melungeon on my daddy's side, I just haven't found out as much about his side yet, but I do know that Daddy was cousins with Elvis through Elvis's mama's side. All I'm saying is people are scared of information that contradicts their worldview, and scared people lash out. As for myself, I'm just glad I'm here, lol! It’s informative and educational. Learning helps us understand the world better. Regardless what the topic is about.
People think ignoring race topics makes you a better person but in so many cases it’s just ignoring the problem.
The more we learn about our history and where we come from the more we understand each other.
My Panamanian friend dealt with bullying by African Americans and she was called a Hispanic wannabe. But if they were properly informed they would know that Latin America does have a black population that speaks Spanish and they also have Spanish surnames. Due to ignorant stereotyping, we obviously need proper education about these things. And thanks to social media things have gotten better because it’s sheds more light on what people don’t know.
I’ve learned a lot from your channel.
I appreciate your content, coming from a mestizo who wishes people were more informed of what that is rather than telling me people with Amerindian blood don’t speak Spanish.

Saying that white doesn’t exist as a category when so many people identify as white, is sort’ve like saying a particular ethnic group or religion doesn’t exist, and so it’s understandable that some people would be upset by that in my view. Saying that these categories don’t exist just because there is so much disagreement about them is like saying God doesn’t exist because there is so much religious disagreement.

These terms are just invented demographic categories Chinese Asiac persons used to be termed mongoloids. The new updated categories should be to ask a person do they identify as rigid attitude / flexible attitude or good / bad or tolerant / intolerant or open minded / close minded or accepting / unaccepting or biased / unbiased or judgemental / non judgemental that might have persons be a tad bit introspective to question how they really are and how they represent or want to be evaluated within peer groupings

I would imagine the majority of comments would be positive. lts actually been quite an ingenious method to use your personal and family history to demonstrate the complexity and nuance around race, identity, nationality and identity. People tend to get an over simplified version of history which can lead to binary thinking so you are either black or white, good or bad, citizen or alien. Some may prefer a simplified orthodox world view where history and culture is owned exclusively by clearly defined groups and this could the origin of some of the hostility. But personally I've found these videos have been a fascinating opportunity to debate and recontextualise the our interconnected history. History is like love, its supposed to be shared.

Keep going! Ethnicity as social constructs should loose its significance as defining privilege in our society. All are valid & beautiful!

You are doing an amazing job educating people on history and social topics that the world tries to deny and ignore. Thank you for being brave enough to do this especially when you don’t have to. There are so many of us from diverse mixed backgrounds that feel like our history has been erased, so it’s amazing to have a place where we can learn the truth about the struggles that people like us have faced in America and in other parts of the world.

A person should be proud of whatever they are and all that they are, etnically, culturally and nationally. I find it sad how that there is hate for anybody. If you find out you have part African ancestry, as I did, though you look white as snow, embrace it. Also if you look 'black' but find out you have 15-25% or higher of European ancestry as do most Americans of black ancestry or something else, embrace it and be proud of it and be glad you are here and alive. Though part of your origins may be rooted in something bad, had it not occurred, you would not exist.

I'll say this I might not agree with some of the things that you're saying including the Francis gualtin skull thing.- Because that also was white supremacist hogwash that passed off as ( race) science, which racism played into a lot, but the one thing I do see that you are doing is picking this apart for yourselves and I like the fact that you not only admitted that you had black. Ancestry,( which some people don't- you even said that you are trying to claim black even now in your conversation about reparations so i dont understand that one comment that accused you of doing so.. ) You're trying to sort all this stuff out because you don't understand not just about your family history but also about race in history. I'm familiar with a lot of the things that you're talking about because I study it myself, just because I like studying human history, especially when it comes to all the race stuff because of what has happened to my own lineage here in America and just the overall concept of that because of people like. Joel Rogers and Cheik Anta Diop and lot of others. I appreciate you not being afraid to look at that. Those that are saying you're" anti-white" because you point out the construct of whiteness, which is the reason we have a lot of these classifications don't like the truth and are basically snowflakes and comparing you to "nazis "they're projecting. They want to be comfortable and coddled I do feel that sometimes you're dismissive of certain things especially with the black experience ( but of course you dont really know) much of what you are speakin on with this "race thing " isnt our fault . We had or have no power to impose such. If anything we hsvr constantly fought against it. We also cant ignore the real situations we face as a result of such construct which is systematic - labor ,law, poltics , education, entertainment ,religion, sex ,health , war and counter war but then I have to look at it as if you're taking a different approach. Because you don't really know to some degree on why and I appreciate you kind of unpacking that some people choose to run away from it. They use excuses like c, R, t, -which has been actually something that looked at truths much of "mainstream america doesnt want to see . And although I don't particularly wanna put that name on it, because it's not a theory that we faced, it's a bare fact of things that original black Americans have been through, I will say that CRT was one direct way of looking at the things in this country that have not been great - but even before that we have many of our ancestorslike Malcom X Ida B Wells and Dr King talk about these things. Let alone Dr Clarke Rev Wright , Michelle Alexander Joy DeGruy and so many others. We dont have to have w "theory" we have hard facts of much of racism that we are still fighting till this day , . You have a lot of people who are following under blind patriotism. I.e. American fascism, that don't want to look at it yet. They get all hot and bothered when and cry about free speech whenever they want to say they're bigoted rants. As I said, I might not agree with everything that you say. But I'm glad that you're actually having the conversation, which is more than a lot of people do. Peace 🙏🏾☦️🕊🔥🦋

It is indeed a serious Human problem that must be objectively understood so that it can be efficiently resolved by those who claim direct connections to the originators of the"Cradle of Civilization," so that Humans can get down to the real business of the Human Imperative that involves meaningful Human progress through constructive Human endeavors, that are Peacefully productive so that ALL Humans can achieve profitable prosperity.
Perhaps it is embedded in the DNA. If this is true, then it must be reversed and corrected.
I know that the research on DNA and epigenetics is inconclusive.
We know that war and oppression has psycho/social effects that influence cultures and cultural behavior systems, social mores, and customs, to the extent that the mental slavery is accepted as normal.
Europeans were exposed to more than 3500 years of continuous wars and oppression that imposed ignorance and fear, to manipulate the emotions and thinking,
so that conformance and complicity to absurdities and atrocities are blindly accepted as the rule rather than the exception.
The behaviors become instinctive without question, and ovverrides ethical conscience.
They know that "no good deed goes unpunished" and that "no bad deed goes unrewarded."
It is kind of like the "Bizaro World " in the Superman comics.
The same thing that has been happening to them is happening to us.
It occurred for them at least 7 times longer.
They are so mentally enslaved that they erroneously refer to themselves as so-called "white!"
They have had longer time to refine the practices of emotional immaturity that rejects adult responsibility requured to seek and practice truth, as it embraces hypocrisy to conceal their misbehaviors from those whom they control as evidenced by continued oppression and wars.

@@purplespeckledappleeater8738 answering this as a white American who's spent a fair bit of time thinking/reading/talking about America's racial history, Americans are weird about race because we haven't yet come to terms with our collective complicity in wiping out Native culture, enslaving Africans, and creating a culture where "All men are created equal" is and was, at the founding, manifestly untrue. We're discouraged from thinking about race in any meaningful way (e.g., see efforts in Florida and other states to eliminate discussions of slavery from historic material that students are allowed to learn about). And we're simultaneously encouraged to be unaware of any kind of privileges afforded to us as white folks (which are many, once you start digging into it all). If you're interested, and you like to read, some great sources are: Jacqueline Battalora, Birth of a White Nation: The Invention of White People and Its Relevance Today; Rebecca Clarren, The Cost of Free Land; Isabel Wilkerson, Caste; and online courses from WhiteAwake.org.
