Honestly, Rick, you sound like the Bob Ross of plant care ~ and that sir is a huge compliment. You are very encouraging and I appreciate all the info you share with us. I look forward to sharing plants with my grandkids too! Love you videos!
African violets are among a number of plants that have been described as "totipotent" - any cell can be induced to form an entire new plant. Years ago during my undergrad, I took a grad level plant tissue culture course, we took little squares of AV leaves and put them in sterile culture. Dozens of plantlets formed from the surface of the squares. That one you showed with plantlets forming from the upper surface reminded me of that lab.
David Jarrell , very cool thanks for sharing, I want to get into botany, in a educated manner, but don't know if the money is there , or what type of work is available around me
My grandmother used to grow hers in a jar of water and the babies grew in the water...wish i lived near you so i could have the leaves you don't want to reuse... finally figured out why i had a hard time with my African violets. I thought they needed to be dry before watering again! Realized that was what caused them heart failure! Can't let the riots get dry!... love you Rick! Keep the taking up and we will keep the learning up! Not great English from a former English major at Penn State but after teaching for over 45 years i appreciate what you are doing! Thank you and God bless you and your family. Have fun with your granddaughter
Rick, has half a leaf, sticks it in the soil, gets babies. Me, carefully cuts leaf stem at 90 degree angle, plants leaf with the end 1/2 inch below soil, makes greehouse for the little pot, checks every day, never gets a single fricking baby. Lol
So many examples, I love this video Rick and no matter how experienced we might be we still learn a lot from other peoples experience. And look at all those babies, they are absolutely adorable!
......you always have a kind word. .....and yes....lots of videos on how to do it right.....mistakes are more valuable sometimes ....I agree...best Rick
I accidently ran across your you tube page when looking for information on African Violets. So glad I did! I am also into Orchids so I think your page will be very helpful. Thank you.
Rick, thanks so much for the informative videos on the African Violets and the orchids! I love them all! I grow a lot of African Violets and a lot of orchids LOL I may have to add on to my house! For the babies at the end of the video honoring your wife, I would gladly pay for anything that you send, whether it's a leaf or African violet baby. I am always looking for a new varieties. Keep those African violet videos coming!
Love your videos, I have learned a lot from you Rick. It is an addictive hobby, I’m running out of room for my av’s and babies. Thank you so much, keep up the videos! E.
I was binging on your videos and decided to check out all the new ones I recently purchased with the glass lol, saw little yellow crawlers by the pollen sacks and freaked out. Already had some garden safe, fungicide 3 . So I used that, but my question is what are they? I have tried reserching and nothing on yellow bugs that are to tiny to see with naked eye . Thank you
……..those are thrips……..they eat the pollen, the pollen sacks are mostly protein......Neem or Bayer works well...…...remove the blooms to assist in ridding the violets of them...
I seem to have done just about everything wrong there is to do wrong - too many leaves in a pot, all in perlite, too upright, too long a stem planted too deep... This is my first attempt at propagation and I was so excited to see roots out of the bottom of a pot just now but now I'm wondering if I should just start again. Sigh...
To get information, maybe you know....can you plant violet leaves in the Aerogrow gardens, under the LED lights, in the peat pods that they provide? With the bright lights, the pods would be moist, not wet, it turns out these new gardens don't have a constant flow of water to them, only 5 mins each hour, to keep them moist, wouldnt that make for a perfect setup to grow leaf babies? Have you tried any thing like this? I got a 'Harvest' AeroGrow garden for Christmas, so its a small one, only 6 growpods, 20 Watts of LED light, full spectrum grow lights, and i am going to grow at least 1 regular garden in it, you know, hydroponically, but I have so many violets ,and want more of my rare and fantasy ones, I thought this would be a perfect set-up to grow them. What do you think, and have to tried something like it?
I haven't tried air rooting on violet leaves.....but I bet it would work great, they root very fast in just a glass with water....adding the air will just root them even faster i bet.......if you try it let me know how it went........viewers would love to hear about it...
If/When I do it, it isnt air rooting, the ywill be in peat-moss plugs, and they are watered, turns out every 5 mins. once an hour, so it wont be sitting in water either, to rot. I think it will work to. I wish i had a camera to video tape the process, but I dont. (Donations will be gladly accepted:) !! But I can post still pics. along the way, from start to the sign of leaves...Depending on how the seed garden does, I might be trying this in a week, or 4 months. Might try just 1 plug, and leave the rest seeds. IF some dont sprout. Then i can do both.
Hello Rick! Thank you for answering my question on the type of wicks you use. I have one more question and then I should be set. What type of fluorescent light fixtures do you use? I notice you lay a 4 foot fixture on the shelving, where it lies directly on a wire shelf. I have the same type shelving and am having difficulty finding the light fixtures that are safe to lie flat on a shelf. Please advise. Thank you and I truly enjoy all your videos!
Wise and very useful suggestions, thank you. I still don"t grow african violets as I already have so many plants to take care of, the orchids and the garden... i have two different species of wild violets, they are ground covering and fragrant too. However the next time i go to the plant store and see a beautiful african violet I might not resist...
Do you keep lids on those containers / totes? Do they need lids for humidity or not necessarily? I’ve got three in soufflé cups with lids. Finally rooted but anticipating the babies growing. Lids will be in the way.
Great hints on what not to do as I am about to start this hobby , I’ve liked and subscribed from Australia and I’ll look forward to more of your work Rick Cheers 😀
Enjoyed this video, Rick! Was curious if you ever cut the top third of the leaf before propagation and if it helps the leaf root faster... I have seen it done in some videos and not others and am wondering if it makes a difference. Anyway... thanks for this video & useful tips.😃
great question....yes i have....I think it helps some....others maybe not. its odd.....some leaves you can drop on the ground and they sprout....others......i put down dozens before getting one to root....has to be genetics...Thank you for watching
Próbáltam keverék földben gyökereztetni,3-4 hónap volt mire kijöttek az első pici levelek, most kókuszrostot próbálok, megnézem itt hogyan sikerül, mennyi idő alatt ? Most 1 hónapja ajándékba is kaptam sok levelet, nagyon kíváncsi vagyok hogy a ca. 10 féle ibolyából, ami ca. 30 levél a kókusz rostban hány darab és hány hónap alatt fog kibújni ?
......if they are sealed in a container...I will water well, when I set them...then maybe not for 3wks......and then only if they need it....the leaves tell you....wilt or curl..after 5-7 wks babies pop out.....then they use more..
I am new to this sort of thing but the thing I found most of all was that it takes time to form leaves. I just expected babies in a few weeks but it took two months to start seeing them. I was really not very patient. But yeah - I have 8 babies started so far. I'm so excited to see what happens - yeah. I wonder Rick if I could ask you a question. One of leaves is shooting out a baby off the leaf itself (not off the stem part). It's just at the base of the leaf where the stem starts. I was wondering if it will survive and grow bigger. I've never seen anything like it on FB or on You Tube. I am going to let it go and see what happens. But was wondering your thoughts.
Rick, I am a new viewer and have watched many of your videos Question - where do you find the wicks for your growing culture? I have had poor success with synthetic wicks and need some advice on where to buy. Thank you - love your videos!!! Sharon Blalack, Spring, Texas
very kind Sharon......thank you...….I use white nylon shoe laces......from the dollar store...……I think maybe 3pr in a pack for $1...….I cut them into 6" pieces......
My mother in law would somehow create minitures from cuttings and they stood small with beautiful blooms. she wasn't one for teaching her secrets but I would love to know how she did it.
hello Ashley....great question.......most the time I droop them in water, just cause Im busy, trimming plants.....and then place in soil within a few days......usually babies pop in 5-8wks...seems to be faster. Fingers crossed........
hello rick I just wanted to ask you if you have ever heard of putting aspirin in water and adding a few drops each week to keep your African violets healthy it acts as an antibiotic for the plants . My grandmother did that all the time and I do it now and it has saved some avs from the brink of disaster . Just wondering if you have ever done this ? thanks
......interesting idea.......no Ive never heard of that.......will have to check into that.......those tricks from grandmother usually had great reasons behind them......thank you...
lol.........I got over that fast......well It took 100+ violets then I started tossing leaves and giving plants away.....I use 2parts peat and one part perlite.........you can add more peat for a mix that stays more moist or add more perlite to lighten the mix and dry it out faster.....
oh no grandpa is a push over LOL I so know what you mean my grandson can do no wrong and he just asks grandma and im getting it LOL . yep he is 4 as well . Loving this video .
Hi. Cool video. Do you ever cut leaves half off before planting them so more of its energy goes to making baby leaves and also helps with way less umbrella effect? And cutting the stem at an angle? Just curious since they all had full leaves in this video. Thanks.
Rick L. Orchids Thanks. Can you put a link or links in the description showing past videos where you did this? I’m a newbie and don’t want to mess it up. I only have one African violet with not a ton of leaves. Thanks.
Any av related video just makes me want to mess with mine. I love getting lost for an hour or two watering or checking each one. I have a major problem with new avs especially store bought. I love to prune them for them to have that symmetry look. So I end up with leaves.. I cannot bare to throw them away lol.. So I have a ton of leaves. I'm getting better at tossing them but it still hurts. Ive overcrowded mine and will check and take out the ones that have gone bad and any of them that have a good size babies. There's still quite a few that are in the back and hanging in there but not as much growth as the ones in the front.
...Heather, thank you for the kind words, I'm the same way.......violets, orchids, ...outside garden.....its zen time...growing babies is part of this hobby.......who can resist.....mine as you saw are packed in sometimes........they manage.......again, ..thank you for all you kind words.........means so much.
....usually in 5-8 wks they pop up.......depends on variety, temperatures etc.....tug on the leaf gently.....if they are rooted them brush some of the soil away to expose the tops of the roots........new shoots should appear soon after....if they are planted to deep, they sometimes have tough time popping out of the soil surface......
Candy......I use damp peat mix to plant them into, If they are covered the peat stays damp till they root and start babies usually......I dont water usually but maybe once after planting them......
Rick L. Orchids How do you control fungus do you sterilize the medium with boiling water or do you spray with peroxide? Can the cut leaf go in immediately or should it harden off? Thanks!
I live it. They are growing that's what maters. Your goofy starts should correct themselves given enough time. Maybe you noticed my upside down fishtank in front of No names tank? I was going to put orchids on it but I do want to grow something of yours. And the violets stay short even when in bloom and would look nice their. So yea we can talk and try to figure it out. I'd like that if your agreeable. But I was not able to figure out private messaging so I don't know how we can talk. This works at lest tell we get to the part that we need to exchange private information.
Based on another video I watched where the author used half leaves, couldn't you cut the leaf to give room for the babies to come up toward the light? Not just at the get-go, but as the babies form. It seems like there'd be more energy from the whole leaf to get things started, but as the babies form, you cut the leaf then, forcing the plant to push the energy into the starts... Totally theorizing here....
Such helpful info!!! What an awesome Granddaddy!!! Do you cover your containers? Thanks so much for your help, my AV that was my favorite(now passed) Aunt's is now thriving! Because of what you told me I was able to save the plant. Thanks again Rick, you're a doll!!!
Thanks Sherry, that makes me smile.......the little cups stay in the big clear box covered to keep humidity up....my grand kids are my pride and joy.......your very sweet
You forgot the other don't; don't plant more than one or two leaves of a variety unless you want to be inundated with babies. Fortunately my stolen leaf only produced two before kicking the bucket. :-D
Oh, and Av's can pop babies just about anywhere, but girls *really* pop them anywhere, particularly from between the lobes. Bizarre. Just wait for it to get bigger, then cut it off and treat it like a sucker. Should be fine.
I have come to the conclusion that my African violets are not getting enough Sun they're nice and green and Hardy I cut them back I've made for babies from their Leaf cuttings and there are now growing but they've never given me flower😞👉👵👈
Lol wel good luck controling a 4 year old 😂 and yes eberyting she does is perfect and what she wants she can gets😍 that the right grandpa additude. Yiur the sweetest i tell you if she ask to have tea with her dolls you sit on a tiny chair and drink out of a tiny cup... in sure and now tbat image is stuck lol . Oooo miss booths bleu angels are doing amazing. And still propogating wow. Thank you for sharing. Thanks to your video my leaf has babies, I had the leaf to far down in the dirt once I remove the dirt babies showed up.

@@ellenhaben1217 very sorry to hear that Ellen ❤️
Thanks for all the great info!
I've always called it "Setting a leaf" as this is what my grandmother called it. Reminiscent of a mother hen setting her eggs/chicks.
......wonderful sentiment and memeory.......Ive head the same...
Great video- thank you!

Hi ! I love it all.,are you sale some leaves ??
please let me know. thanks
When putting down leaves or even babies, do you put them in some sort of hot house/terrarium?
Rick, do you water the potting mix after you pot them or just leave them to dry?

Do you sell , share your violet leaves. I would love to have some of your violets if you will and are able. You take care
not at this time........If I could I would give you plenty
How much water should I be giving my cuttings. They have rooted but no babies yet.
Thank you Rick you are the best I like the way you think 👏👏
My mother in law would somehow create minitures from cuttings and they stood small with beautiful blooms. she wasn't one for teaching her secrets but I would love to know how she did it.
Hi Rick I have a question, the you planted directly to the soil?
or you putting in water fist to rudder? thanks 👍
hello Ashley....great question.......most the time I droop them in water, just cause Im busy, trimming plants.....and then place in soil within a few days......usually babies pop in 5-8wks...seems to be faster. Fingers crossed........
Hi Rick , I planted directly to the soil , and I am afraid if that is not going to work 🙏😣
what else can I do? ?please help me!
soil is fine.......you dont want the soil wet, just damp, and air holes in cups, or container......plenty more where they came from.....no worries.
Thank you so much! ! Blessings to and family 🙏
hello rick I just wanted to ask you if you have ever heard of putting aspirin in water and adding a few drops each week to keep your African violets healthy it acts as an antibiotic for the plants . Do you cut the roots off the large leaf? After you replant the babies. Cut or not to cut off roots to restart mother leaf.
Good morning. I love your violets♥
Thanks Nilza.......and good morning to you.....
Do you have a video on your violet mix? My problems is I can't throughout any leaves.

the 4" & 6" pots I get from Amazon........the saucers are from Lowes....

You'll get better. Eventually you'll be able to toss undersized babies too. Not easily, but it can be done. :-)
Ola Rick boa tarde, fako do Brasil. Você vende mudas dessa variedade de violeta? Obrigada
I am a newbie so how many leaves do you put in a cup 1 or 2
Could someone please write the main points? My English is not good and ge talks very fast. I really want to learn his tricks.
Can you plant leaves in the winter or just the spring?
…...anytime time you wish...…..
How long does it take for the baby to start to come up thank you
I miss you so much that I am watching your 3 year old videos. How are you?
How long does it take for the babies to grow? Mine has been 2 months, no sign yet.

Rick L. Orchids Thanks, I did find one hiding behind one of the leaves, hopefully it will make!!
hello i just bought one today and its a white and purple one
i wanna ask how often do u water the leaves use in propagation? thank u
Candy......I use damp peat mix to plant them into, If they are covered the peat stays damp till they root and start babies usually......I dont water usually but maybe once after planting them......

Totally theorizing here....
.........absolutely.....and a great tip for others here......Ive done it myself to allow.... them to grow easier around the leaf..........thank you
Do you sell your AVs?
Kathy, I don't sell any.........I give some away when I get extras........you welcome to message me.....Thanks......Rick
Rick L I don't know how to message you🤔
go to my channel header, and click on about....then send message....
Long time no hear. Hope all is well.
Great
How many times can the same leaf be propagated
......several times.....as long as the leaf is still alive and able to produce new shoots.
What if the babies are under water?
......Ive never done that method.....but Im sure some of the same suggestions would apply.....very interesting.
can I use sand insted of perlite
sand works great for drainage but can also cause media to retain moisture longer......just use caution...
I have come to the conclusion that my African violets are not getting enough Sun they're nice and green and Hardy I cut them back I've made for babies from their Leaf cuttings and there are now growing but they've never given me flower😞👉👵👈
.......I bet your right, they need light and food to bloom.....
Great video! I also have some propagation videos on my channel!
I will have to check them out........thank you
