35 years ago, my dad had to drive me 45 minutes into downtown to the sheet music store to buy the imported C.F. Peters edition and the metro classical record store to buy the Allegro cassette tape of the Helma Elsner Bach harpsichord music album. A week or two and $30 later when dad had the time and i had the money, I could finally hear and see how to play Bach's 6 Little Preludes. Now I just watch on RUclips instantly. Thank you.

Bach heavily promoted The keyboard instruments of 12 Tone Equal Temperament which most music is based on, not a surprise you like his stuff. There is plenty of music composed much more recently you probably can't stand. Charles Ives (1874-1954) comes to mind for me.

@@ElaenPinillo-yq3quThese Little Preludes are meant for beginners so I would say about a year to two years of piano study. However if you really dedicated yourself to learning these pieces I'd say you could learn one a month like I did. I've only been playing piano for a year but I also had about 7 years of violin study behind my belt so I didn't have to start with the absolute musical basics. My first ever piece I memorized was BWV 934, the Little Prelude in C Minor.

Love Bach, but so difficult to play somehow. You can kind of cheat or cover up mistakes with the pedal with Chopin and other romantics 😅. From this book I only played the one in C-minor, I guess the easyist, but still so difficult in a mathematic sense. Cant really explain… but nontheless, fan of the 3 B’s: Bach, Beethoven and Bartók ❤🎵. Thank you for this video 🙌🏼🫶🏼. Happy to hear it again 🙏🏻🎹

Paul, what edition of this score are you using for this? I've got three different editions.. the Schirmer "Performance Edition", Barenreiter, and Henle editions, and all three show an ornament on the fourth d/f pair in the second measure. I actually came here to see how you played that particular ornament, only to find that you are omitting it, because it's not in your score.

  • @joeblue6325

Paul, like many other pianists, plays appogiaturas as acciacaturas, which did not exist in Bach’s time. Ex. Second measure BWV 934.

They are C c d D E e in the video instead of C c D d E e in terms of BWV numbers; on the other hand Paul's order creates a good alternance of tempos and moods (at least to my ears)... so take your pick!

Ok, now that we’ve established you can play Bach (and any other piece for that matter) extremely fast regardless of mood, rhythm, cadence, ornamentation and simply “feel”....is there something else in music that perhaps you are omitting? Music needs to breathe, Maestro, yes, take a breath. It’s the silent spaces in between notes that makes a musical work satisfying and real. Just something to consider.

is it the piano or mic overload that makes the playing so staccato and harsh like in the second piece? I feel like its not floating , dab dab dab dab dab dab dab dab , maybe its just not my kind of playing , dab dab dab dab, its especially the faster notes, the left when playing slow is much like the way i learned playing, allways the most close connection , not this dab dab dsb dab dab , like the bass in the third piece , it for me is closer to a delicate nuanced touch

    • @ruperttmls7985
