    Awesome interview!!! Thank you so much Omar for setting this up and of course big thanks to Mr. Waid for coming on. Kingdom Come is the greatest DC story of all time. Fight me. Haha. I have never read a comic written by Mark Waid put it down and thought to myself, meh, didn't care for that. He is amazing at what he does. I wish had the time to read more of his work. I still haven't read his Flash run! He deserves all the respect he gets and then some. Thanks again guys. Take care and peace. P. S. Waid on Superman!

    Mark Waid has an AMAZING story regarding his time at Fantagraphics. Apparently, he would throw temper tantrums every day at his desk because he knew the boss wouldn't come in until 10am. This story can be found on google and is in a published book.

    • @mwaid
      @mwaid 3 года назад +4

      Yeah, a LOT of stuff can be "found on google," including explanations of how we never actually landed on the moon. As far as the book goes, a lot of those claims about me were unfounded or highly exaggerated--that's what happens with thirty-year-old stories--and if I recall correctly, not even the book claims I "threw temper tantrums every day." But your claiming that is exactly why that kind of misinformation can be "found on Google."

  • @rickymcn1
    @rickymcn1 3 года назад +5

    No one can deny that Waid was an amazing writer and was a cornerstone of comics for many of us over the years however he is also everything wrong with the western comic book industry today. Writers who behave like this man, the way he speaks to long standing fans, the constant virtue signalling and (alleged) interference with creators trying to get independent comics off the ground are just a taste of how far this man has fallen. I will never open another one of his books. You are free to enjoy his work, I would never dream of telling another human being how to behave (unlike Waid) but just know that the reason manga absolutely smashes western comics in sales and has taken over all the floor space in book shops is because of people like Waid. Remember, his court case was settled with a non-disclosure agreement. That was Waid's stipulation. Meyer would want to shout the result from the rooftops. He sits alongside Dan Slott as one of the most pretenious and fan hating white knights in the comic book industry. Omar, I love your channel dude, it's obvious you have a great love for what comics used to be so you know exactly what I'm talking about.

    • @NearMintCondition
      @NearMintCondition  3 года назад +7

      I'm going to say one thing about all this without going into a debate. MANGA has been dominating book sales since 2000. The year of Tokyopop. I'm not sure if there have been youtubers reporting this like its something new, but I do find it interesting that some of my viewers have been bringing this up more and more lately. It's a double edge sword though, manga sales are phenomenal in the book market, but in the direct market it's another story. Not that the book market is nothing to write home about, since they are the reasons companies like Dark Horse stay afloat if you look at the numbers of sales DH did in the direct market.
      Anyway as a guy that worked at a comic shop and was there at the beginning of the manga boom, it does aggravate me sometimes when people act like this is the beginning of the end for western comics. The grass is always greener too, I don't hardly hear anyone bring up the counter argument when talking manga sales. People in the western world can make a good living writing and drawing comics without killing themselves unlike some mangaka. Or the editorial mandate from Young Animal or Shonen Jump...no way would any creator in the west put up with that. Or the overhead for that license and how much the profit is for companies like Vertical. There is a reason companies like CMP, Iron Cat and One Comics went under. Damn, this would have made a fun episode instead of writing down my thoughts. :)

      @@NearMintCondition Apologies for bringing the mood down. I know manga has been doing a lot better for a lot longer than most people realise. I think why it's so top of mind for everyone is due to demon slayer outselling the whole industry combined just by itself and the top 20 graphic novels being all manga for most of this year so the levels of embarrassment are at critical levels at the moment. That isn't my focus here though. It's Waid's treatment of customers and his peers. From calling fan's white supremacists (including black ones) to having people banned from cons for trivial questions, he's just a nasty piece of work. Again, apologies, I genuinely wish none of this needed to be said but as Waid likes to point out from his ivory tower, actions have consequences. Anyhoo, looking forward to your future vids and hopefully we'll get that New Warriors Classic omnibus Vol 3 announcment that my OCD has patiently been waiting for 😁

      I think there should always be room for this kind of criticism even on this channel. Creators like Waid take actions and have criticized a lot of other subjects through their work in comics and social media. There is no action without consequence so it’s more than likely they will get called out for it. Which in a respectful manner should always be possible.
