Teachers go out of their way to not just to share their information, but to let that thought or knowledge be relevant in person's life. Personally, to me, teaching is to share one's experience. We keep saying that we learn the best through experience; "to fail and try again". Indeed, failure is one of the best instructors and countless teachers have experienced much more than us, meaning they failed more than we probably did. They're there to inform us their experience and knowledge from said experience so that we may be able to not repeat their past mistakes. To give what is important effectively and to restrain to give delicate information that may lead students to do the wrong things possibly out of curiosity or jealousy; teaching is very influential, yet with its great power to influence how many people act, we must hold on to the responsibility of teaching that will ultimately give the student the best idea of what is right or wrong in such subject matter. The decision is a student's responsibility, yet the basis of their decisions are ultimately decided by their level of understanding of the world. A teacher may increase their level of understanding, or decrease it whether intentionally or not.
I think a video about how to be a good STUDENT would be a good follow-up video for this one. I was watching this video in my statistics class this morning, realizing how my professor exhibited many of these traits, but there I was watching a video about how to be a good teacher, not paying attention to his efforts. So the irony suggests a video on being a good student would be useful too.
The School of Life I'm guilty of expecting others to know something that I haven't taught them, thinking that they would have learned from watching me complete a task. Being a good listener has helped me to discover where I can facilitate learning for the person that I'm working with. I have learned as much from others while teaching them as I set out to teach.
1) the good teacher never blames another person for not already knowing. 2) good teachers don't get angry 3) good teachers can admit they don't know lots of things 4) good teachers pick their moments 5) good teachers are also good students
If you’re a teacher who searched this up, then know that you are appreciated since you wouldn’t be watching this video unless you actually cared about teaching kids properly 😊
My 6th grade English teacher was literally the best. She was an engaging teacher with the kids (which is a good way of kids liking your class) and she was funny. Since she was engaging we all wanted to be in her class and everyone liked her. If there was more of her our school would he more enjoyable and we’d probably learn better.
In my 20's I often went camping with my neighbor/best friend and her family. I love to camp but unlike her, I wasn't raised outdoors and had to learn a lot. I can still clearly remember their reaction to me rowing a canoe, which is more complex then one might imagine. Every time I lost control, their reaction ranged from ridicule to all out rage. I'm 40 now and to this day I associate canoeing with something negative and will make any excuse to avoid going. I realize how irrational this is but that's the effect a shitty teacher has on our subconscious. So when we meet a person who utterly refuses to attempt an activity we consider simply, it can most likely be traced back to a bad teacher somewhere.
As a teacher, there is only one point I partly disagree with. It's not always the teacher's fault if a student (as in, a pupil at school) doesn't learn something properly. Languages, maths etc. can not be 100 percent learned and remembered without some self-discipline of the student and his or her own effort to think about and study the resource he has been given access to through the teacher. And I guess that goes for 'life lessons' too. Without the motivation to listen and learn, even the best and most passionate teacher cannot access somebody who is not ready for it. Of course there are many reasons for why a student learns (or doesnt learn) the way they do, and ideally, a teacher would have enough time and freedom to look deeper into every students individual struggle. However, the educational reality we live in nowadays can make this really hard.... :/
Zimtfuchs true, it cant all be the teacher's responsibility. They did make this point in a roundabout way, and rather briefly, by saying that good teachers are also good students.
I think that line may be more about accepting the responsibility to relate to others' frame of understanding. It's more of a preparatory step for the instructor's mindset.
sunMMVIII yeah but you could also look at it this way - if a good teacher needs to be a good student, then he'll cater well to the good students and not as well to those who arent as good as him, simply because he's never been a bad student himself. This is problem one frequently faces if they are predominantly self-taught. People know when their teachers are empathetic to their situations. A good teacher with a good background may not be able to provide that for a bad student. In that case, the bad student must find it in himself to improve his communication skills and participate, because honestly, who are we kidding? Are all of us really understood all the time, let alone when we're in school and are bad at expressing ourselves? A teacher's gotta teach, not read minds and predict what might be incredibly unpredictable behaviour.
I'm talking about communication skills in general. I wouldn't touch a conversation that is directly about school and teachers. That topic is about as hot and unproductive as many political conversations, haha.
sunMMVIII haha, so true. Then again, this particular video is emphasizing on scenarios where we have to explain ourselves to someone else regarding something. So I guess its kinda... both about real teachers and just normal folks. I used the example of school teachers because thats that one time in our lives when we are prone to being influenced by our impression of an authority figure. Thats when the real changes occur, I think. Anyway, good talk.
This is something I've been giving a lot of thought to and the primary reason I'm going into education. We need to train our teachers better and pair it with a total reform of the education system. Learning should never be a humiliating chore, it should be fun. What is the point of life if not to learn and to have fun, after all?
This is really important for a lot of social debate, especially here on RUclips. Many people online call people who won't listen to them ignorant insult them or talk down on them not realizing that they approach they use is why conversations about social issues goes so rough.
This video was awesome! As a professor, this is very easy to relate to. I had to go through all of these things at one point or another from both the student and teacher perspective. Its always good to start a lesson from a position of humility, it keeps one from glossing over things or condescending to the other person.
I wish more teachers understood that they don't have all the answers. My faith in academics dropped significantly when I realized that a lot of my teachers were saying things that were wrong, simply because they thought they had to be the authority on all areas of knowledge instead of admitting their own ignorance in some some things.
1. Never blame another for not knowing. 2. Don't get angry - slightly detached and slightly pessimistic approach. What you have to teach might not be understood. 3. Can admit you don't know lots of things. 4. Pick your moments. 5. Be a good student.
This is a great reminder to always check up on ourselves and our method in teaching. Sometimes we just go along the path without clearly examining whether we're walking on it carelessly or not. Thanks for the video
If only all of us were good teachers and good students how effective communication would be! :) Great video, I'll try to be more aware of my faults whenever I try to communicate something to someone or help someone understand something.
I send these videos to friendly constantly because I believe they are perfect for getting a grasp on so many things in life. Thank you for this free content. I will gladly support this channel more when I can!
Your videos are so powerful, insightful and informative. I find myself rewatching them to make sure I get as much out of them as I can. Thank you for your channel and for all it aspires to be.
I would love to become an art teacher because of my passion for art, just the thought of sharing the things that changed my life artistically is so beautiful to me.
MyArtJourney I personally never understood the title art teacher because I believe art can not be learned... or thought. Art is found by one self always. Here in Germany we have officials and “experts “ tell us what is art and what is not. Such thing rub me in quite the wrong way.
Tonybmw1988 That's an interesting point of view. In my eyes the techniques of art can definitely be taught, such as perspective, color theory, anatomy and how to draw what you see, ect ect. Now once you learn the basics you can do whatever you wish and you will of had a background of training as your tools, like Glenn Vilppu says, "There are no rules, just tools".
Tania Sugimura Yes! And RUclips is a start! In fact I reasently finished editing a video explaining my process when drawing. It's something like 45 mins long but I hope someone can get something out of it. XD
It's also important to note that it is ok if your student doesn't understand everything at once. Sometimes, explaining things that are not completely correct is just the first stepping stone to explain a broader, more complex subject.
obviously watch the entire video, but for reference here are the five prerequisites of being a good teacher as discussed: 1. The good teacher never blames another person for not knowing. 2. Good teachers don't get angry. 3. Good teachers can admit that they don't know lots of things. 4. Good teachers pick their moments. 5. Good teachers are also good students. good luck friends✨💗
Although I had never even considered I would ever teach anyone anything, partly because of being acutely aware of my own flaws, the opposite has revealed itself to be the case more often than not. I have ended up teaching my parents, my sister, other people, as much as they have taught me. I have an eye for their issues by virtue of being outside of them, usually, and they have an eye for mine, and to take up the roles of both student and teacher as we traverse our existence is not just a fact but a common occurence makes the message you impart of vital importance. Thank you for the insightful video.
I watched the Aria The Origination episode that teaches this not too long ago! It's amazing how true and how extremely difficult this kind of regiment is to follow. We must keep an clear mind and an open heart when embarking on the trek of teaching.
Thanks for the video. Any teachers here have some ideas to respectfully bring a class back to focus if it gets out of hand? Talking like 30 students. I give high energy language classes and a lot of times in one class it gets out of control, other students say they can't work because people are too loud etc., between activities. I don't like shouting even though I see other teachers do it (done it on the past gets you no where- I'm also quite calm by nature though)
I used to work with kids with disabilities. Don't talk down to kids, talk to them like they're adults and they will usually act that way. Without respect, you're not going to teach a dog to sit.
The most important thing:Students feel your energy that you do everything with passion and fun;no fear of making mistakes;also make them reflect😉Be authentic,Be yourself😎That's it!
I want to teach my knowledge of playing piano, especially to my nieces and nephews and friend's kids, but I just can't seem to find the patience to do it. I know it will be a great skill for them when they're older, it's been very benificiel to me both finacially and personally, but I get so frustrated when they make the same mistakes over and over again. I don't get angry with them, but I lose interest in teaching them. This video helped a little bit, hopefully I'll find the patience to really teach them someday.
Teaching is my spiritual gift and I can honestly say I can work on 4. I typically like to discuss things at that exact moment because I believe either A I won’t care about it in a day or 3 and that whatever I say won’t be taken serious. Lol and B I want to have all the facts laid out right then. Pride issues I suppose. Every teaching moment I can have I want it. 😩
id like to change the "dont get angry" to... "control your temperament" Not only anger, but most other emotions can also mess with the learning process... one can also feel intimidated by a student... or projected... some times will feel euphoric. But it is not a sin to feel... as long as we remember our freedom finishes where the other`s start. Do not fear anger, fear allowing it to take over you or your reactions.
(3:15) "No one ever learned anything under the threat of humiliation." Isn't that the basis of boot camp? I only know from the movies, so maybe everything I know is a lie, but it seems like humiliation can be a pretty powerful motivator. Evil. But powerful.
It is impressive to conceptualise that there is a philosophy for almost everything in life. And, more so, so fulfilling that we can actually apply philosophy to every day life. The important questions that philosophy, in many cases, raises ignite and tackle important areas of our day to day lives. Additionally, having individuals dedicating their time to tackling these real-life issues is invaluable. A topic such as this - How to be a good teacher - may look obvious and easy to overlook. However, the matter it addresses has immense contribution to our day-to-day lives, probably over generations. We can demonstrate this in a simple scenario: a good teacher, as described in this video (and whatever could be added), could actually influence a generation of individuals that would, in return, influence another generation. This, ladies and gentlement, tells us we must think critically about things that may sometimes look obvious but may affect our lives. And thanks to The School of Life.
All your films are so full of knowledge and each one goes a long way to make at least for me immensely wiser and knowledgeable and every bit of it is a truth. This video is not an exception to this. But for the topic I want to share my view of a teacher. I believe in the thought that teachers can't be made to become one like an artist they are born. Thi fact is a proven track since we started knowing things from Gurus who always taught us lessons that gave us the essence of knowledge and how to hone them to pass on through generations of the fore. I am citing an example of a recent past when there lived a student in Calcutta who was known to be mediocre during his time he was in college. When he, Mr.Lalit Mohan Mitra tried to get admitted in the then Presidency College, he was rediculed and debarred from the posh institution he so dearly wanted to get in as being a third-class-passed. Later he became a great teacher of Chemistry and many students thronged to his class and after a the craze became so overwhelming that the then British Calcutta started calling him Ladly. This popularity brought the Presidency College at him and offered him with the prestigious head of the department in Chemistry in that college but he refused saying, "I am still a third-class." Gone are those days of teachers and only you are laughing stock if even tried to be one!
A crisis is not a good time to criticize (is there ever a good time to criticize?!? 😁) but it can be a good time to teach. If you help clean up the mess (i.e. solve the crisis) and keep a good-natured attitude about it, there's no need to wait three days to teach a lesson.
Daniel Baqueiro lol, I thought about that but it really isn’t a good idea. I had a teacher in history who put films EVERYDAY and made us do the assignment. He fell asleep a lot and didn’t explain much. And that that’s why I failed my trimester. I would ask for help, but he didn’t explain things well.. glad I’m not in his class anymore..
Nice points! Thanks for the great tips! It seems worthwhile to think about these ideas in the context of teaching oneself. Are you patient with yourself? Do you have unreasonable high expectations of yourself? etc. Let's love ourselfs together
Humility is the opposite of pride. People rarely learn when they are prideful. What is your basis for claiming that no one learns "under the condition of humiliation?"
I like how your first example of a teacher is a kid teaching an older person. Humanity evolved because of language and a key point about language is transferring knowledge. But just like any transfer, it involves the recipient just as much as it involves the giver. And some recipients are dumb.
however, if you have been humiliated by someone, it doesn't mean you haven't learnt anything. You've learnt something about them, for example (that they respond a certain way, or are a bad person). You learnt but weren't taught
The most important skills a teacher can have is to have empathy and the ability to yourself into the shoes of your student. You can't see the world from your own eyes, you have to see it through the eyes of your students. If you can't do that, how can you know what is needed for them to get progress and also learn and understand how the world works
Hey. I feel like I'm the student in some of these skits in the video. I've been trying on and off to make games, design RPG sessions, and other things, but I always have difficulty just making a map. As in, I don't know how to fill a space with content that's actually fun to play in or follows a cohesive design. I keep creating lists of overarching details, but what I *need* are all of the little things. Everytime I play Dwarf Fortress, the whole complex I dig out turns into a mess, and don't ever ask me to build a house for you in Minecraft. I feel like I'm missing something important which would make some professional game designer pull out his or her hair and exclaim "HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW THIS!?" But, I don't. And putting forth more effort to grasp at straws just doesn't seem to make up for it.

Should be considered standard though! 🙄

Can you subtitles in korean?
"Nobody has ever learned anything under conditions of humiliation."(3:13) That alone makes this video worth the price of admission!

Camilo Rodriguez u definitely find one 😜
thanks man
Thanks 3>
Damn- I’m a bad student
The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires

Paradoxically you failed because it didn't inspire at all. Not a great teacher
Stelios Toulis damn you didn't have to do him like that.

I think a good teacher is someone who can spark the students' curiosity to learn more about what is being taught in the classroom.
Yes!! I've always had a good curiosity of everything and I want my students to have that.
As a college English tutor, thank you for this video!

Haha but as a student of the humanities, I would argue that not even mathematics are absolute :P
1. Never blame another for not knowing.

Not only anger, but most other emotions can also mess with the learning process... one can also feel intimidated by a student... or projected... some times will feel euphoric.
Teaching should be taught as a lesson in every school
The animation is on point as always, and this video has many good points!!!
Thanks for this video. I've just starting teaching and this is really helpful.
As a spiritual teacher, thank you. I want to be a great teacher one day
This is the best channel! Thank you.
Brilliant graphics. The artist is extremely talented and inspirational.mThank you..
There is little gap between living life like a teacher and feel sissy. You never argue, insult, be rude, but always polite.
What a great video. I have been a terrible teacher. Back to school for me.
Life is based on the skill of learning and teaching. The better you can teach and learn the better your life will be.
I don't understand how someone feels like disliking these videos?
excellent video
A crisis is not a good time to criticize (is there ever a good time to criticize?!? 😁) but it can be a good time to teach. If you help clean up the mess (i.e. solve the crisis) and keep a good-natured attitude about it, there's no need to wait three days to teach a lesson.
It s' important advices for you be a good teacher in the future
In my school we have a event when last year students teach chosen subjects to junior classes. Hope, I’ll be good teacher
How to be a good teacher: put on a film
Daniel Baqueiro lol, I thought about that but it really isn’t a good idea. I had a teacher in history who put films EVERYDAY and made us do the assignment. He fell asleep a lot and didn’t explain much. And that that’s why I failed my trimester. I would ask for help, but he didn’t explain things well.. glad I’m not in his class anymore..
I need to show my teachers this
thank you for this knowledge
Before considering a subscription to the service advertised please do some research. They seem to be a shady company ripping of many people!
thanks for all the videos
Nice points! Thanks for the great tips!
It seems worthwhile to think about these ideas in the context of teaching oneself.
Are you patient with yourself?
Do you have unreasonable high expectations of yourself? etc.
Let's love ourselfs together
This video is very useful, thank you for your awesome videos

Humility is the opposite of pride. People rarely learn when they are prideful. What is your basis for claiming that no one learns "under the condition of humiliation?"
I like how your first example of a teacher is a kid teaching an older person. Humanity evolved because of language and a key point about language is transferring knowledge. But just like any transfer, it involves the recipient just as much as it involves the giver. And some recipients are dumb.
I am a school teacher. Thanks alot
Win friends and influence people.
however, if you have been humiliated by someone, it doesn't mean you haven't learnt anything. You've learnt something about them, for example (that they respond a certain way, or are a bad person). You learnt but weren't taught
amazing, thank you
Thank you again!
Thank you for sharing such a amazing video :)
The most important skills a teacher can have is to have empathy and the ability to yourself into the shoes of your student.
You can't see the world from your own eyes, you have to see it through the eyes of your students. If you can't do that, how can you know what is needed for them to get progress and also learn and understand how the world works
I was taught that good a teacher teaches to the test in a one-size-fits-all fashion.
Please make a video on how to be a good student
Thanks I always played school and I’m always a bad teacher lol😅

I feel like I'm missing something important which would make some professional game designer pull out his or her hair and exclaim "HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW THIS!?"
But, I don't. And putting forth more effort to grasp at straws just doesn't seem to make up for it.
Teaching is one of the best ways to find out how your world view is distorted
