Lloyd Honeyghan beat Don Curry was the shock of the decade, beating the apparent heir to Hagler and Leonard in savage style that night. He actually held every belt possible back then, the British, Commonwealth, European, IBF, WBC, WBA titles and was in the Guinness book of records. I remember it like it was yesterday, a underrated and sadly not mentioned anymore. 💯 Hall of famer
@captain kirk yes even a suddenly shot brook was beating Spence for 8 rounds...than only when the eye went...Spence was able to match brooks superior work than overtake him
Honeyghan lost this fight the year before when Starling beat the crap out of him. Pre-Starling fight, Honeyghan was brash, cocky, full of confidence with a big punch to back it up. Starling nullified that punch threat and stripped off all that cockiness from Honeyghan. Some fighters never bounce back after their aura has been taken away from them (Hamed and to a lesser degree Tyson for example). No doubt Honeyghan's confidence was fragile going into this and once Breland hit him, he was back in that ring with Starling and getting a doing. Which Breland duly handed out.
Two years previous Honeyghan stopped Jorge Vaca in three for the WBC. Here Breland Stops Honeyghan in three for the WBA. In the next year of 1991 Vaca would Stop Breland in Sacramento on the Tony Tiger Lopez vs Brian Mitchell undercard. Funny how the fight game turns out 🥊

Starling proved that a busy fighter could cause Honeygan problems, and Mark followed that strategy to a T. Curry cut too much weight before that fight, but I agree, this wasn’t quite the same Honeygan. Strategy and styles or not.
