Lloyd Honeyghan beat Don Curry was the shock of the decade, beating the apparent heir to Hagler and Leonard in savage style that night. He actually held every belt possible back then, the British, Commonwealth, European, IBF, WBC, WBA titles and was in the Guinness book of records. I remember it like it was yesterday, a underrated and sadly not mentioned anymore. 💯 Hall of famer

Honeyghan lost this fight the year before when Starling beat the crap out of him. Pre-Starling fight, Honeyghan was brash, cocky, full of confidence with a big punch to back it up. Starling nullified that punch threat and stripped off all that cockiness from Honeyghan. Some fighters never bounce back after their aura has been taken away from them (Hamed and to a lesser degree Tyson for example). No doubt Honeyghan's confidence was fragile going into this and once Breland hit him, he was back in that ring with Starling and getting a doing. Which Breland duly handed out.

@@rovingwarrior3710 Don't be silly. Fighters are humans and have weaknesses and frailties like the rest of us. They aren't robots. Curry was obviously weight drained, he doesn't lose to Honeyghan otherwise. That was Honeyghan's peak as a fighter though. It is well known that he never had the same focus after winning the title and making some money. He had those bad hands too.Everyone knew this at the time. Starling was too much for him, but he was maybe 80% that night of what he'd been at his best. For Breland, he was completely shot physically. Watch his earlier fights and then see the kind of shots drop him here. Anybody who knows boxing can see he has no balance, no legs and no punch resistance. Breland was a stellar amateur, but got nowhere near that level as a pro, but here he looked like Hearns, which he absolutely was not.

    • @rovingwarrior3710

@@johnniea4684 You are very silly by commenting without making any point. No cares about your weaknesses and frailties in lfie, either you perform well or you don't, and that's the bottom line. You are no expert and despite how impressed you may be with yourself, and have no clue on what would have happened that never did happen. When Curry fought Honeyghan that wasn't the first time he came into the ring weight drained, but it was the first time he was beaten. Fighters styles have as much to do with how they perform against different fighters than how prepared they are and maybe more in some cases. My point is that Honeyghan fans overhype his best performances while downplaying his worst by trying to simplify it to just saying he was "shot" (whatever that means, is it british slang or just an excuse made up for honeyghan?), totally dismissing his opponent's abilities. The outcome of Honeyghan's fights were just as much about his opponents as they were about him.
A factor that seems lost on many of you is that many fighters who achieve success early on are never the same fighter after the first time they receive a bad beating, as if it does something to their psche and makes them realize they aren't invincible, but losing is still losing.

Yeah pretty much. If you look at Honeyghan's physique during the Don Curry fight and compare it to this, you can see the huge difference in his conditioning. Now that's taking nothing away from Breland. I still think Breland would have beaten him because Lloyd's twitchy reflex defense probably wouldn't have been able to counter Breland's reach and ring intellect. It was a great era back then.
