What the US government wants is for its companies to be allowed to invest in other nations' oil industries for a cut of the profit. In Venezuela's case though, oil has absolutely nothing to do with the US's role in the ongoing crisis, because what the US wanted was a free and fair election. They sanctioned Venezuela because Maduro rigged the last election, and reimposed sanctions because Maduro was trying to undermine the opposition during the campaign. Now, what they want is transparency on the results, because there is basically no transparency from the government on the counting of votes or the results of the elections.
