Even though Froome only finished 17seconds ahead of the chasing pack I think this was a big show of strength from him and did more damage psychologically to his tour rivals. It was exciting and also scary to watch at the same time lol
It also created a day at the Tour that will be remembered for a long long time, it's epic moves like this that make World Tour cycling so exciting, and create cycling legends.
@Donald Drumpf I have a cyclist friend...they are skynny, but muscular, most of us have fat and muscle on arms...and ok, on arma..but, trast me, you dont want them to use their foot to kick you. Think about Sagan legs? Huge muscle.
Risky? On a dry descent it's FAR more risky to be in the pack. Froome is not just a climber like Quintana - he's also one of the best TT guys, so it's no surprise he could hold the gap downhill after the hard climb. Attacking at the top is road racing 101.
you talk about risk v. reward but this is a defining moment. One that will put fear in his opponents and will be remembered by rivals, fans and the media for years and years to come. yes Froome is a monster on the climbs, one of the best TT riders out there and oh yeah BTW if you think he can't win solo on a descent BOOM! Sagan talks about the beauty of victory. you can win ugly, use your team to do all the work, sit on the wheel and follow, or you can go out and own the race. Attack and show everyone you are the strongest and deserving of the tittle Champion. This is what Chris has shown us. He smashed it. That was epic shizzle.
You missed a lot on this ride. The people designing the race wanted to make it harder for Froomy to win. that's why they put in those downhill finishes. Froomy wasn't as interested in the seconds he gained as he was in making a statement that this tour was his regardless what they threw at him. He was demonstrating he was willing to take risks to win it all. The other thing you missed was the setup. Froome planned ahead by putting on a 56 chain ring, in case he had a chance to escape. In addition, he set the peleton up on the third climb. Coming to the top of the third climb a competitor for the King of the Mountains was all set to take the points. All of a sudden Chris jumped out and passed him for first. You could see the rider look over at Froome saying what are you doing? But Chris won both the Tour and King of the Mountains last year, so he set up the idea that he might be making a move for that jersey again. That's why Quintana thought he could get that bidon, because Froomy was just going for the points. By the time he figured out what was going on, Froomy was outta sight. I disagree that his top tube peddling wasn't more efficient. These are the pros. They check this stuff out. They train on downhills and the fastest way down. Chris had an advantage with his 56 chain ring and he made the most of it.
+David J Tyler although now we find out that the French were right, again( he is a cheat. arhh well, can't wait to see which cheat wins the tdf this year ) I'll be sleepless in Australia, again !
Of course the reward was worth the risk, he held onto the yellow jersey for the whole tour after this. Saying that he should've waited is just a guess, he could've easily put himself out of contention on other climbs or descents, or even just sitting behind others in the peleton and getting caught in a silly crash. He gained the yellow jersey and with it, the unwritten cycling rules; which would work in his favour if he had a mechanical. Got to risk it to get the biscuit!
An interesting point that nobody talks about in analyzing this win was how he set it up on the prior climb. I can't remember now who it was - a Frenchman, I think - who was wearing polka dots that day, wanted to get the KOM points and on the summit before this one Froome jumped him and took the KOM points and then sat up and coasted and the Frenchman was gesticulating angrily at him - like "you didn't need those points, why did you steal them from me?" So, by having done that on the prior summit, it lulled everyone into complacency on this one - they were thinking "We don't know why he's grabbing those KOM points, but he's just doing that again" and expecting him to sit up again - which explains the slow reaction that let him get that initial gap.
Love how so many of the commenters are such experts. Never been pro, never studied science, never ridden this course, BUT - they know so much. Impressive.

Froomy is so tactically brilliant this tour. I love him, but I hate that he won. primarily because of sky tactics. If he was on a different team or if they used different tactics, I would enjoy the GC battle more.
Dude! I didn't know you did race-interp videos. I was just looking for highlights from this stage and found your vid. This is good analysis and fun to watch.
I think the risk vs reward was worth it. This stage cracked the other teams mentally. It showed that Froome can win uphill, downhill, and on timetrials, it also showed (again) that no other team can compete with the strength of Sky (Ineos). Froome doing this forced all contesters to be even more mentally focused and alert then they were, draining their mental fortitude even more. This was a brilliant move of Froome and shows (like how he won the Giro in 2018) that he has a lot of the qualities of the legendary greats that could win stages in all terrains and conditions.
NIce recap. Quintana won't win a tour de france while Froome is still at his peak, if he ever does. He just doesn't seem to have the tactical acumen or the tenacity to really take it straight to his rivals. He always loses the tour early in the race and then has to work hard to gain time back.
And now that Froomey won't participate, he still doesn't have a chance to win since Thomas is replacing him with Egan Bernal as backup xd Quintana won't ever win the yellow jersey as long as team SKY/INEOS are involved in the race xd
Chris Froome, what a legend, what a man. The best part must be when he punched that yellow man in the face lol. I'm so excited for TDF 2017, I will sit benched front of the TV whole July.
Great video, thanks! I was not a BIG fan of C.Froome before, but after what he did in this downhill he has got all my support! You need to be a REAL champion to do this, taking some risks of course ... but this is the most important bike race in the world so riders also have to take risks if they want to win!
The reason movistar couldn't let Sergio Henao (don't know how to spell his name) go is because they can let a sky team mate go as then froome would have some body to help when he does go. Either way, Chris froome would have gone because it's a win win. Either everyone uses all their effort chasing Henao or Froome has a team mate to work with after he goes.
The reason they Movistar didn't let Haeno go is because it meant that if Froome attacked Quintana later in the stage, he would have a teammate up the road to help pace him. This would have given Froome a ton of help. Valverde had to chase Haeno to prevent giving Froome an advantage, nothing to do with Haeno or Sky winning the stage. Secondly, you are wrong about slowing down over the top of a climb. By convention that is where water bottles are always handed out so riders can catch their breath and drink over the top. I agree Quintana should have been more careful and his casualness lost him the stage and time to Froome, but it was a surprise unconventional attack by Froome and certainly not what you learn at 'day one at cycling camp' Furthermore, the your claim that Froome shouldn't have attacked because of risk vs reward is also wrong. What a cool surprise to discover that VC has a video on that 😅
From the 'time' stand point, I agree, one could argue that it wasn't worth the risk. From the 'Froome's image' stand point, this changed everything for this guy (just like the attack on the flat with Sagan/Bodnar).
It’s called panache. With this stage, Froome earned the respect of many French fans. Not that their respect helps Froome much, but it was a display of panache that should be respected.
Thanks bro, I was really pumped on the ride vlog but as where most my videos seem to get 5k+ views in a week, the last 3 have struggled to break 2k. RUclips struggles.
Probably, but I didn't saw the last videos appearing in my subscriptions page. The interview with the guy and his mules was so dope! Definitely needs some more attention.
Nice video mate, you should do more of these it was interesting and you break it down into more detail and reveal things that you wouldn't realise when just watching on tv. When I was watching it on TV I didn't even know Quintana dropped off I was focusing on Froome Nice :)
It is only a bad idea if it doesn’t work, it was only to risky if he crashed. I say he needed to win this stage because they did everything for Froomie to loose this tour. This was Chris letting them know he was going to play by different rules.
Important caveat: Froome had his mechanic mount a bigger outer chainring (54 I think), so I suppose he had this kind of attack in mind before the stage even started.
sorry to tell you but a tour de France with 2 time trials like the 2016 one, is made more for Froome, remember that from the 4 minutes he won the tour, he got 3:15 from the time trials, from this attack he just got 11 seconds
Nice breakdown, road racing isn't my thing but do find the tactics, etc interesting, thanks. Question, is it not the difference between the greats and the rest of us that they are prepared to risk it all should they need to?
Not even close to a Froome fan but I love that he nailed that guy running alongside the riders. Stand still and enjoy the race instead of being a hazard, dork. So foolish and dangerous.
I'm a bit late to the party, great video! I disagree with the risk/reward thing though, the conditions were perfect for descending and except for a few corners it was very straight. And his reward? A stage win and the psychological advantage surely must've been worth it.
That looks like a Greame Obree position!!! well done froome taking some cycling lessons from the past. you don't need alot of watts in this position the Aero dynamics will save you all the extra watts.
600W from the top tube? No way. That position is quite hard to pedal from and I doubt Froome ever trains that. And how can you both say that Sky calculate everything and the pedaling was worth it but also that the attack was too risky and not a good idea? IMO, awesome riding by Froome and great attack!
No one ever mention the Osymetric chain rings. If there is one place they excel is descents. Other guys are spinning air and Froome had, in effect, a massive chain ring.
LOL, dude, you don't tell a winner I don't think you should have done that, it was too risky, blah blah blah. I swear you were on the other team and just ticked off he stole your glory or something.
Hi! Good video... Dont agree with you about it being too risky... To the contrary the risk was worth it because Froome gained 13-20 seconds in GC... Pro cycling is a risky sport... Sky ear-marked this stage as a great opportunity, obviously they did a recon of the stage, knew the descent & performed on the day... It just gave Froome another option/weapon in his arsenal... It was really clever & well executed & contributed to him winning the tour.... Dublin Dave.
Sky laser beams away all his energy b/c they're robots lmfao. OMG it's been so long since I've seen this, but this line sticks in my mind all the time.
you've got a lot to learn. what froome did was very unorthodox for a couple of reasons. Usually the aerodynamic advantage of the larger group behind is going to catch a solo rider. 95 out a 100 times this is a bad move as a way to win just the stage let alone the whole race. The other reason is it's only stage 8. the hardest climbs don't come until stage 18, 19 and/or 20 and that is where the race is controlled if you leading or won if your not. It's normally a very bad idea to expend so much energy this early in the stage. If you look at the guys that go for stage wins early they are usually no threat to the GC and if you look at how the perform the next day you see what grand tours are all about. There are proably 20 riders capable of winning an early mountains stage that's not a mountaintop finish. All of them will perform badly the next day and they have no chance at GC. Chris took enormous risk her to prove a particular point and silence some of his critics. He's been dissed for being a rider that just looks at the power tap numbers and rides to a target that allows him to be strong in the second half of the third week. And it is true that is his style and truthfully the style by degrees of anyone who wants to win the overall. It is the smartest approach, especially in the bread and water era were in now where they can't risk doping. Cleaner sport is mostly good but it means less attacks and less aggressive racing. It is in fact less exiting to watch. Froome has been sensitive to the criticism that he's not capable of an attacking style like for instance the dumb assed Vincenzo Nibali who lost the 2013 Vuelta Espania because on arguably the hardest climb in all of racing he couldn't resist trying to break Chris Horner who was one of the smartest racers the sport has ever seen and he stayed withing his numbers and reeled in every on of Nibali's faux attacts, then completely broke him on the steepest part of the climb. tinyurl.com/ybldrxtq Nibali almost comes to a halt when he caves. That's what can happen in week 3 if you expend too much on an early stage like here. And it's what happens if you attack too much. Even though it's often not a very smart way to race fans seem to love attacking riders. Froom is a great rider I think going over the top realized he wasn't totally gasses so he gave it a dig. He's and incredibly competitive guy. Once he got a gap he worked probably harder than he should have to keep it. The move only got him 16 to 23 seconds on the contenders. It's not where he won the race. The next day was hard. They let a break win it but the contenders got caught in heavy rain and a hailstorm at the top of the last climb. Quintana might have had a go if not for the conditions. There where was a rest day. Froome won the race on the time trial. If he hadn't one this race in an attacking manner he'd have had to hear critics complaining his big lead going into the mountains meant he won in a boring fashion, gaining on the TT and defending in the final mountains stages. They can't say he doesn't attach any more. But the point is you're all wrong about what you say as they went over. What he did was very risky audacious and very uncommon. Technically it was a bad idea that could have backfired. The race isn't won in the first week.... usually. I mean, Horner won that Vuelta with a huge first week attack but that was a mountain top finish. You usually can't keep a gap on descents alone. Not the way it's normally done. It's ok.. it's a very complex sport that takes years to wrap your head around.
Chris Froome was super pissed that day! Hitting that spectator in the face and then going ape shit on the descent!! His ego could of got him in real trouble!
Yeah, it was a risky move, but don't underestimate the psychological damage that he inflicted on Quintana by doing this. The tour wasn't just won on the time gaps. In my opinion, by the time they hit Ventoux, Quintana was psychologically broken.
The video completely fails to mention the most important aspect in this which was how it was set up on the previous climb when Froome attacked near the summit as if he was doing so for the King of the mountains. When he did the same on the final climb his rivals just assumed he was doing it for the same reason, ie, the KOM. You do stress very well though the crazy risks he took on the descent and whether it was worth it. It came off and he looks a hero but it could so easily have ended in disaster.
It wasn't that the course was built for Quintana, it was that the course was built maintain suspense longer into the race and prevent any rider from opening a big gap on a mountaintop finish that early.
thats why Chris Froome is so awesome, compared to Wiggo in 2012, it was as boring as hell to watch. And back then Chris Froome already shown his charisma in the mountains. But yeah, i also dont think its worth the risk but hell of a show
Froome put out 400-600W in that position? Nooo way man :) I just saw a while ago a GCN video checking if pedalling in this position made sense, and they found it did not. In my personal experience supertuck is an excellent way to gain speed on a descent without pedalling. I don't see why it wouldn't be faster if you put out even a small amount of watts during supertuck. In the video he is at 78km/h, I think in the biggest gear he would have to spin like crazy to get that 400+ power. Somebody please prove me wrong :)
You have to admit the all those who keep saying that Froome and Sky are predictable and have made the tour boring must have been choking on there words as risky as it was it was needed to not just show the Pelton that Chris is gifted individual but to show the whole cycling community that his got what it takes to kick butt !
Even though Froome only finished 17seconds ahead of the chasing pack I think this was a big show of strength from him and did more damage psychologically to his tour rivals. It was exciting and also scary to watch at the same time lol
i agree, the same the stage before ventoux when sprinted second to sagan..great racing for the spectator ... supreme..

From the 'time' stand point, I agree, one could argue that it wasn't worth the risk. From the 'Froome's image' stand point, this changed everything for this guy (just like the attack on the flat with Sagan/Bodnar).
Everyone gives Sky shit about being boring, then they do some exciting shit, and then people criticise them for taking risks.
It’s called panache. With this stage, Froome earned the respect of many French fans. Not that their respect helps Froome much, but it was a display of panache that should be respected.
When I saw the phrase "downhill attack"
I swear I was i thought i was going to hear some eurobeat.
What a let down.
Just brilliant. So funny. Your take down of Kintana's capitulation and complete dismemberment was brutal but fair.
Somehow missed some recent videos. Enjoyed this on, made me laugh several times :)
Man, the last 3 or so videos seem to have done really bad vs others. RUclips be hatein on the VC
+The Vegan Cyclist the last three videos have been great tho!
How does copyright work for using footage like this? Love it and wondering why we dont see it more often
This one fell through the cracks. I tried to do more and get flagged EVERY DAMN TIME.
@@TheVCAdventures it's a pity. Great idea.
hey don't be mean to Dan martin :P He's for me the rider that gave the most entertainment in this tour :D
Saroua so true
very informative and funny. Great editing as well. Good work bro :)
Nice video mate, you should do more of these it was interesting and you break it down into more detail and reveal things that you wouldn't realise when just watching on tv. When I was watching it on TV I didn't even know Quintana dropped off I was focusing on Froome
Nice :)
Love this commentary, not stale at all
It is only a bad idea if it doesn’t work, it was only to risky if he crashed.
But wait, was it 13 vs 1? You didn't really clear that up. lol. Great video sir. Keep em coming. 🥑🥦🥕♥️
That looks like a Greame Obree position!!! well done froome taking some cycling lessons from the past. you don't need alot of watts in this position the Aero dynamics will save you all the extra watts.
Hey vc! We want more of these!
600W from the top tube? No way. That position is quite hard to pedal from and I doubt Froome ever trains that. And how can you both say that Sky calculate everything and the pedaling was worth it but also that the attack was too risky and not a good idea? IMO, awesome riding by Froome and great attack!
Great explanation. Loved this video. pedalling whilst humping your top tube, just made me laugh when I saw it live.
nice vid! whats the song at the beginning?
Janelle Kroll - Sunny Days (BKAYE Remix)
I rewound that scene again and again, that was fantastic!!
Great commentary, baller ass attack too, Froome really earned this one
do you have something against quintana?
Yes well played Sky, as they said no one seen it coming.
even 1vs1 on the downhill hill, Valverde is a top descender. It shows just how risky Froome descended not to get caught.
you need to get a job at NBC, I enjoy your commentary much more! Good job!
Sky laser beams away all his energy b/c they're robots lmfao. OMG it's been so long since I've seen this, but this line sticks in my mind all the time.
This downhill attack might go down in history as the one thing that'll make him a legend rather than just another forgotten tour winner.
Brilliant quality video 👍👍👍👍 could watch this one all day lol😀😀😀🍺🍺🍺🍺
3:47 that shift actually look pretty robotic
you've got a lot to learn. what froome did was very unorthodox for a couple of reasons.
Froome has been sensitive to the criticism that he's not capable of an attacking style like for instance the dumb assed Vincenzo Nibali who lost the 2013 Vuelta Espania because on arguably the hardest climb in all of racing he couldn't resist trying to break Chris Horner who was one of the smartest racers the sport has ever seen and he stayed withing his numbers and reeled in every on of Nibali's faux attacts, then completely broke him on the steepest part of the climb. tinyurl.com/ybldrxtq
Nibali almost comes to a halt when he caves.
The race isn't won in the first week.... usually. I mean, Horner won that Vuelta with
a huge first week attack but that was a mountain top finish. You usually can't keep a gap on descents alone. Not the way it's normally done. It's ok.. it's a very complex sport that takes years to wrap your head around.
please do more of these !! loved it !
Unrelated question, what is the point of noses on saddles?
Chris Froome was super pissed that day! Hitting that spectator in the face and then going ape shit on the descent!! His ego could of got him in real trouble!
But just when froomy starts the attack nairo only stays like 10 seconds on the front of the group then valverde comes back and lead the group
Yeah, it was a risky move, but don't underestimate the psychological damage that he inflicted on Quintana by doing this. The tour wasn't just won on the time gaps. In my opinion, by the time they hit Ventoux, Quintana was psychologically broken.
"Quintana is a little baby" - Actual quote from a Cat 3 cyclist.
Cat 2 now buddy... but I dont like him, he is so boring to watch. This was kinda meant to be a comical thing and it didn't really work out
hes 1,67 and 59kg so its not that wrong objectively LOL
The video completely fails to mention the most important aspect in this which was how it was set up on the previous climb when Froome attacked near the summit as if he was doing so for the King of the mountains. When he did the same on the final climb his rivals just assumed he was doing it for the same reason, ie, the KOM. You do stress very well though the crazy risks he took on the descent and whether it was worth it. It came off and he looks a hero but it could so easily have ended in disaster.
one of the best vids on the net
It wasn't that the course was built for Quintana, it was that the course was built maintain suspense longer into the race and prevent any rider from opening a big gap on a mountaintop finish that early.
thats why Chris Froome is so awesome, compared to Wiggo in 2012, it was as boring as hell to watch. And back then Chris Froome already shown his charisma in the mountains. But yeah, i also dont think its worth the risk but hell of a show
Really enjoyed this .... made me laugh numerous time Thanks for the chuckle!
200th like. Another GREAT vid, yo. Thanks!
Are you ideas of ice and fire? Voice sounds similar
The ‘Yuut!’ is why I subscribed :)
Hahahaha nice video man, you have a very funny way to show the things
Froome put out 400-600W in that position? Nooo way man :) I just saw a while ago a GCN video checking if pedalling in this position made sense, and they found it did not. In my personal experience supertuck is an excellent way to gain speed on a descent without pedalling. I don't see why it wouldn't be faster if you put out even a small amount of watts during supertuck. In the video he is at 78km/h, I think in the biggest gear he would have to spin like crazy to get that 400+ power. Somebody please prove me wrong :)
Was it about the power, or was it about the look? Everyone watching was shocked.
I love the commentary, sounds like Miranda Sings
You have to admit the all those who keep saying that Froome and Sky are predictable and have made the tour boring must have been choking on there words as risky as it was it was needed to not just show the Pelton that Chris is gifted individual but to show the whole cycling community that his got what it takes to kick butt !
You should do more breakdown like this!
I certainly hope not!
