Mannn...I was getting ready to post damn near the same thing. I'ma be 36 this year and Wild Wild West was the first Hip Hop song I ever remember hearing when I was 4. That was my favorite song at the time.
Slick rock bed time story put me on. I might heard some other songs first but that was the first rap song that blew me away.

I just turned 32 almost a month ago now, and I was born in 89... and my first memory of rap is LL, Mama said knock out and Ain't gone hurt nobody by Kid and play.. not sure if they were released around the same time but those two always come to mind when I think about my earliest memory of rap..
but the most vivid rap music, that I remember clearly, being heard everywhere from(at that time)my teenage siblings, to my whole hood, was Snoop! he had Ohio on smash MUSICALLY.. he was played at barbecues, all on the radio, videos, everywhere ..
that made me pay attention to rap for real because my older siblings and friends stayed talking about rap when I was around.. so I knew alot by age 6

As a 44yr old LA native, I was not a fan of the South's style of rap until the early 2000s, however, I've grown to like the appreciate the South's contribution to hip-hop!

Yes! They still do. Every time New Yorkers talking about the history of hip hop they overlook southern artists that have made key contributions to the genre. I even see them giving accolades to new artists for starting trends that southern artist who weren’t as popular started a long time ago
I'm from New York I was able to recognize Scare Face , 8 Ball, MJG and Out Kast were superb lyricist. That's before I knew who a Tip or Luda was. You had rappers like Luke and 2Live Crew who were party rappers that we didn't regard as lyricist but they had joints tho.
@@ajianic1743 Luke probably was the rapper who got it the worst being that they were so party oriented because that Miami bass music was popping in the South. In fact, the whole Freaknik scene was based of that sound and everyone gravitated to the party style they kicked. It's almost like the Miami bass scene reflected the older style that NY went thru in the late 70s early 80s of hiphop. So when NY advanced the lyricism with the Rakim, KRS-One, Kane, and Kool G Rap's a lot of the rap from that sound was maybe considered limited and more reflecting an older style already done.

Being from the Bronx, I think like most hip hop heads I just cared about lyrics and beats.I didn't care where you were from.That being said my favorite Southern rappers is Andre 3000,Field Mob ( Shawn Jay & Smoke) and Luda!( one of my all time faves regardless of location).
You can tell T I was on point he was looking who was coming in and coming out💯 that's a good sign
Gotta be honest. I was born and raised in the deep south, and I appreciate our heritage, but outside a handful of artists, I was never a big fan of southern rap. Whenever I heard southern rap being played in my presence, it just didn't move me like New York/NJ/Philly rap did.
As a Hip Hop fan, I place heavy emphasis on superior, elite lyricism. I appreciate Emcees who are technical, intellectual, precise, vocabulous, versatile, dynamic, great storytellers -- the aspects of rhyming that require hours and years in the lab to perfect. I like lyricists who make me press the rewind button. When I listen to an artist, I want to say to myself, "damn, this dude/woman is nice with it." If the artist is "conscious," that's icing on the cake.
Plus, I always loved Golden Era boom bap beats with scratching, mixing, and cutting that were largely prevalent in the east coast. The beats were more abstract, jazzy, and creative -- the DJs really dug in the crates to present something unique and timeless.
The southern rappers I grew up respecting were The Geto Boys, Arrested Development, Outkast, Goodie Mob and even some of Kris Kross's records. Later, I discovered K RINO -- who I dare say is the greatest MC I ever heard from the south.
My issue with southern rap is that I never felt that many of the artists (outside of a few select) cared enough about being high-caliber lyricists. Too much emphasis was placed on external factors that I felt had nothing to do with Hip Hop. I'm not saying that New York didn't also have its share of mediocre rhymers who weren't saying anything -- but as a whole, New York still had enough quality lyricists to overcome the few who were not. To me, the south just had too many below average, dumbed-down rhymers for me to develop a deep appreciation for southern rap.
Today, I no longer have respect for New York rap because they lost their way. They sound exactly like the south, which is a cardinal sin because you never copy anyone's style. New York had a nice run, but I suppose all good things eventually come to an end.
💯 triple salute! And I can agree you speak facts. The problem is the record industry is a gift and a curse. The major labels being so close to access made Emcees from NY quick to get a record deal and by doing so give up creative control that garnered the sound in the first place. Now when the record industry and radio decide to move on from the “NY sound” we find our selves assed out like some hoes. 🤷🏾♂️ Trust and believe that’s THE INDUSTRY side though and there’s still plenty of original talent here in the city of Hip Hops origin. Ppl that never stopped doing it like Skyzoo, Smoke DZA, Joey Badass. Really putting on musically that’s far and away from the sound of this new age gangbang drill music madness that a lot of the streets is into. The best sound is that which is underground (not on radio) and needs to be searched for as usual and always. NY we still here🗽🗽🗽

TI was one of the first southern rappers I heard from my generation that I had no choice but to respect as a lyricist.
Before him, I mostly listened to NYC hip hop if I was looking for a lyricist.
Respect to Clipse, who are also southern rappers from my generation who had my respect as lyricists too.
That said, lyricism isn't the only thing hip hop is about. All areas and regions have they're own style. Some styles are more lyrical then others, but that doesn't mean it's not good hip hop.
Hip hop can be fun, thoughtful, creative, artistic, political, etc. It doesn't have to always be boom bap shit. Sometimes, I just want to chill or dance.
Southern hip hop does what it does, and it does it well.

We know for a fact new York radio stations podcasts etc. For the most part don't even promote up and coming new New York rappers. They are forced to go to the south were as a whole, them people don't want to hear no New York drill rap. Its kinda ironic and messed up at the same time

The real respected Outkast, Goodie Mob, Scarface, Mystikal, etc. but "Real" Hip Hop fans didnt respect the South as a whole. Same for No Limit, Cash Money, 3 6 Mafia, Project Pat, etc and their movements. "Real" Hip Hop fans blew them off but once Summer 2003 rolled around (Never Scared (with T.I.), Get Low, Like A Pimp, etc.), there was no turning back.
