My family and I had a blast at MGM. We loved the backlot tour. My daughter and niece were selected for the Pearl Harbor stunt once. We loved the exploding oil tanker truck stunt also. This was back when Disney had vision and was highly entertaining.
I have fond memories working for Disney as well but I was a photographer at MK... But the thing I did not like is when you had "FLOAT" on your schedule, and that meant you did not know your location until you got to the park. so you had to bring all your outfits for the different locations or go to wardrobe to get the right one and again had to get there early. Now they have one costume for photopass. I will forever remember my time as a CM.
I visited the Disney MGM Studios about a month after it first opened, and it was something special! Loved the back lot tour, and the special effects (like the giant bee from 'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids') section. Of course, there was no Tower of Terror yet, but we had The Great Movie Ride, which I will always remember fondly.
Thank you for sharing, my first time there was soon after it opened. I loved the backstage tour, seeing Herbie and certain houses, I think like the Golden Girls? Remember they had a mini recording studio there, still have the cassette tape somewhere ahh they mad a teenager feel like a recording star! Got picked to be in Indiana Jones once too! It was great fun.
I remember when the studios first opened the Cast Members had to share lockers. I liked my personal locker at EPCOT. We had an exhibit called Futurecom that no one wanted to work because it was boring. Until a girl flashed me her breast while I was working the telecommunications monitor. The entire room saw it and I had a crowd. The place became popular amongst the Cast members after that
As a Disneyland Cast Member, I work in Disneyland and will say that A LOT of people In Star Wars/Toon Town Attractions wants to work Star Wars Rise Of The Resistance because of being able to act for First Order and Resistance. Second choice is often Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, which is actually my personal favorite to work given how relaxing yet fun it is to work.
I really miss the old Disney/MGM Studios from back in the day. The Backlot Tour, The Great Movie Ride, The Hunchback of Notre Dame show, Sounds Dangerous, Millionaire, etc. Not saying I dislike it now, but so many fond memories of the way it was.
From '91 to '06 no matter how hard I tried to appreciate that playground it felt like a punishment and that was as a guest. Always did love the Backlot Tour ( not the tank bit, just the tram and AFI bit). Was gutted when they stopped it and borderline offended when they also got rid of Great Movie Ride.
I was actually picked as an audience participant in the Pearl Harbor tank show. It was amazingly fun. And yes, being sent to oversee a screaming mob of children would be purgatory
I was picked for the tank show on my very first visit to Disney/MGM Studios. I was so thrilled. That same day I was also chosen as the "Death Scene" guy in Indy show. They must have really loved my Hawaiian shirt hahaha
The Great Movie ride was fantastic... not perfect but I hear mainly because the ideas for the end of the ride had to be scrapped and so we got the movie theater montage. I found that a bit off. It wasn't BAD, just maybe too long (because you had to often wait for the B group to get loaded in). That said, losing this ride really changed the character of Studios once and for all. It now has no theme whatsoever. It's just a bunch of stuff now.
I totally get what you are saying. It did sometimes take a while for all the cars to load in to the theater. But I still loved GMR and I actually enjoy Runaway Railway too. But I do give the nod to GMR as a film buff lol
@@HEAVYMETALSL my understanding is the end movie montage room was also considered to be a further wizard of Oz scene where the riders are told to pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, and then it would open to reveal a gathering of a dozen or more figures of the greatest movie stars as iconic characters. Maybe licensing for that was crazy or it was just a budget buster, so we got the movie montage instead. The thing is that you never know. I'm sure the imagineers have tons of great ideas so I take it with a grain of salt. But I always thought the last scene went on a little too long. In the end I miss the ride because it represented the best of Disney parks: an original idea that told a story, engaged the guests, and went above and beyond the standard to do so. Was it perfect? No of course not, but compared to the current era of everything being a rehash, I miss what theme parks used to be.
We bring a cooler bag with ice packs and fill it with snacks, powerade and water bottles and save money that way at the disney parks. Also never get the lightning lanes. We just go when we know its not the busy times of the year. I get where your coming from when families can only come during the holidays.
We too often take our own lunches into the parks to save money now. When kids meals are so expensive, and adult meals are even worse, you almost need to. Well at least my family does. LOL
When I drove Safaris it was Rafiki's. Funny enough, I ran into a a girl I worked with at Busch Gardens in HS in the Boneyard and we hit it off right away, even stayed together after our programs were over for a few years. I wonder where she is now...
On the positive side Cast Members still called customers "Guests" then instead of the contemporary "Friend". I swear I was called "Friend" so many times by complete strangers (cast members) during a recent visit to WDW, I nearly fell into a South Park episode. You know the one..."I'm not your friend, Pal".
Yeah I I do wish we could go back to that time of using sir and but given that they said there's a point 05 chance of someone not living the way that they were given it first I don't think that's going to happen again anytime soon but yes we do need to have another word then friend "howdy friend, can you just not pee on that wall" it's so weird.
I was tank at studio back lot in 2003 to 2005, and they would make us leave to go to fantasmic, and they would make us do PAC around 2 every day. Not a punishment but a weird way to make sure they got 8 hours out of us.
I know it’s very weird. On my end the source file has stereo sound out of both speakers. For some reason RUclips is only playing it out of the left. But there is no way for me to try to fix it unless I take the video down. I’m sorry :(
My number one question that has never been answered is how do they get the old musty smell into the haunted mansion? I have loved that detail ever since I was little. Thank you!
I never seriously thought about the smell. I'm not sure they pipe anything in for this attraction. I know if you work there you aren't allowed to smile though. I had a friend that worked there and she had to get moved because she was constantly grinning.
I was so sad that they got rid of the backlot tour. It was my favorite attraction at MGM. I love the Star Wars saga, but I don't like the new Star Wars area of Hollywood Studios. It just doesn't hit. IMO. I do remember taking my kids to Honey ISTK. Even as a guest, it was maddening. Didn't stay long.

Mk was probably the tea cups because I could see a lot of people getting sick. Epcot clean up crew for mission space same reason. You already said the histk playground for hollywood studios and definitely the boneyard at ak
Tea Cups is a good one. Fun fact: I puked in a trash can once after getting off of tea cups because my family went spin happy on me. Mission space never bothered me though.
@@RandomGamerCory well it’s always the option not to work there. But if you’re gonna work there, unfortunately there’s not much you’re gonna be able to do about it.
Oh, Jungle Cruise was by far the attraction everyone wanted to work if you were any bit extroverted. You could improvise and mix it up with the guests. And a lot of people love Custodial actually. You get to walk around and interact with guests all day.

How much pocket change do we all have and do we have any rights to a movie that at least 5% of people thought was mediocre that we can use? And so we got this… awkward play place that was about as enjoyable as a McDonald’s play place. This of course was just my opinion. What I really wanted in Disney was more of runaway railroad, haunted mansion, PotC…. And splash mountain was there but not yet open. I don’t know if I ever got to ride splash mountain come to think of it. If I could wish for one thing it would be the original larger plan for frontier land, focused on more immersion in a larger space.
