Bro that sewer scene lives rent free in my head, 0 was my first Yakuza game and it was just such a memorable moment. Also he whooped me in the first fight but the sewer one I manhandled him cause of Beast Style, it felt great.
What makes Kuze so good, is how he's a real person. He isn't a Herculean god with unparalleled physical strength like Kiryu or Amano, he really does have the build of a boxer or UFC fighter, and it's his knowledge of the fight that allows him to go toe to toe with Kiryu and escape relatively unscathed. He is also a reflection of Kiwami Kiryu, in design especially, with their shared belief that they must follow through with what they desire - Kuze yearning for power, and Kiryu wanting to protect his family. He takes off his jacket to reveal Enma (judge of the underworld) because he believes that he has the right to decide Kiryu's fate, to judge him; but in his final fight with Kiryu, he leaves it on, he knows who Kiryu is, he knows he has lost his right to decide Kiryu's fate and that he has unleashed a 'monster' on the world. It wouldn't surprise me if someone had called Kuze this when he first debuted as a boxer, but like how he 'misjudged' Kiryu at the start of 0, he does so again now - before thinking Kiryu was worthless, and now thinking Kiryu is heartless; when in reality Kiryu's humanity will always keep on the right path. Again Kiryu is a reflection of what Kuze considers a 'real' yakuza, who will do what he must to get what he wants, and for the first time Kuze isn't strictly wrong - he just doesn't understand that what Kiryu wants isn't his own success snd power, but a happy life for the people he loves.
And not to mention that Kuze had the biggest impact on Kiryu instilling in him tenacity. He was in a twisted way, a coach and trainer to Kiryu. Even though Kuze was only in one game his influence can be felt throughout the whole series: it's no coincidence that Kiryu dresses very similar to Kuze wearing a Light Grey suit and white snakeskin loafers.
i saw Kuze reasoning and liked him in the end, he has to follow Yakuza order whether it's legit or not. he is a true yakuza and attacking Kiryū is his job.
Kuze is my favourite lieutenant because he was telling the kiryu truth, Kiryu was thinking so noble about Yakuza life, he was thinking like it was a box match and when you lose you have to get out, but you should fight as long as you are alive if you choose that kind of life, just like Majima After he met Kuze he thinks different tho imo
Kiryu thought being a Yakuza is cool, because he saw all the respect Kazama got. He just never saw how ruthless and romanticized a life of crime can be. Kuze was the one who taught him that in the end.
I really love how Kuze and Kiryu parallel eachother, Kuze's whole being shaped by being a Yakuza, and, to see how easily Kiryu would discard it just to save those close to him, it angers him to the core. And, only after their 4th fight did he starts seeing how, while differing in their beliefs, Kiryu's are just as strong as his own. It also might be a stretch, but the fact that Kuze's fuckin glasses tell a lot about him(First fight him being proud and keeping em on, second fight discarding em because Kiryu's a threat, 3rd fight keeping em on because he still refuses to see past Kiryu's "weak beliefs", and coming off the 4th fight by Kiryu's punch, not to return in the 5th, as he recognises him as a true Yakuza)...God, this game was such a golden trip.
