In my day we used to just kick a hole in the head. That's the way my grandpappy thought me. Both methods are fine. Personally I prefer the kick method and I would encourage everyone to give that a try.
+Marc Crossland It's only necessary if you want to put a mic inside the kick to capture more definition and punch. Whether you need it or not really just depends on what style you're playing and what sound you're going for.
