- Chris Foss was one of those artists growing up in the 70s and 80s that if you were into SF material, chances are you were familiar with his work.
You may not have known his name back then- I certainly didn't, but his style was undeniable and had a profound impact on many artists who would follow in his footsteps.
I'd completely forgotten he'd done design work for Hollywood besides all the book covers. Didn't know about that Battlefleet Gothic painting though. That was surprising.
Some sweet looking space art resides in this here book!
Plus there's still reasonably priced copies in print!

Loved this since the late 70s and 44 years still love it.
I always was inspired by Chris Foss's paintings. From his book covers to the large format reproductions in the pages of Science Fiction Monthly. And of course his design work for movies etc. Great book which I am going to have to chase up.
Just bought this on Amazon. Can't wait till it comes in!
It's certainly a looker!
Great video, just picked this up… always a fan of Foss and Mead.
Who's the guy who's ships always looked like fish? They'd have tons of small window all over it like star trek but they were really vertical? Need stuff there Big Guy!!!!!! Good memories!!!!
This was one of the first artbooks I got when I was able to start collecting them. Of course spurred by Jodo's Dune. This and beyond the horizons by John Harris. Love those books dearly and staggering its been over a decade.
One of these days I'll get that Harris book too. Not sure why I don't already own it!
No time like the present!
By now I've saved your 'Obscurities in Literature' playlist by way of a wishlist. I'll have to wait to get this one though. I just dropped a hefty sum on Takayuki Takeya's 'The Hunters' Angle'.
This looks like an great art book. Nice review as well 😊
Do you know of a similar book but for high/grimdark fantasy ?
Does it all need to be by the same artist?
I really liked Udon's Substrata book. Or any of the Adrian Smith game related artbooks that CMON put out, especially the one for HATE, which is a great companion piece to the actual comic Smith did (and has more forthcoming at some future point).
They're getting pricey, but the Dark Souls Design Works are pretty damn grimdark, from a more technical perspective.
This is one I'll ponder over for a bit.
@@ObscuritiesinMiniature it doesn’t need to be by the same artist. I like to use fantasy art books as inspiration for painting minis
I'd give my eyeteeth for a copy of the Jodorowsky Dune book, the one from the documentary. It was never mass-printed, was it?
Based on the "bible" he had storyboarded? I don't think anything has made it out to the mass market... yet. I'd certain love to see more of it too!
@@ObscuritiesinMiniature Yeah, the one Jodorowsky sent out to the studios and producers. Just the stills that made it into the documentary had me drooling.
Oh, the fuel for sci-fi games between those two covers!
