I believe I've viewed most of your videos multiple times sir. I still need to complete the multi-part videos, particularly those for shotgun reloading. Although, I have 2 close friends who are avid reloaders, one who specializes in shotgun reloading across the board, I even forwarded your clip to him as a reference source. I'm a fan of bottleneck rifle cartridge reloading and would like to gain more experience with straightwall cartridges such as the .45-70 (including reloads for black powder with paper patch lead bullets) Well, I sure hope we are blessed with your continued presence for many years. My dear friend from the tri-state area, whom reminds me of you in terms of his broad background in firearms and reloading, passed away during October. I've never known anyone more benevolent and tolerant, and will miss him.

This is all the basic geometry that anyone would have learned in high school. Whenever I see people wondering things like this, I smile to myself thinking, "You already know the answer if you went back to your high school math days, but you were probably asking yourself back then, 'When would I ever use this?'"
This man is a treasure chest of knowledge. There are or used to be charts that would tell you what height your front sight needed to be in relationships to the height of your rear sight, but that was just an approximate number due to differences in bullet weight and hang time of the bullet in your barrel. When you change bullet weights that will change the impact your bullet. Increments are very small on longer barrel guns and larger on short barrel guns. If you install a peep or receiver sight on your rifle you can bank on putting on a taller front sight to put you on target. Nowdays, most people use scopes, but it's useful information to have. Back in the day you could walk into any decent gunshop and they would have a box with different height front sights and will different widths. If your rifle was shooting high at 100 yards you installed a taller front sight. If it was shooting low you would install a lower front sight. Just the opposite of the rear sight. Some guns come with taller front sights so you can choose your load and you can file the front sight down until you are on target. Glad Benny is doing well.

I always wondered about the sight ramp stair case steps on a rifle, for shooting with iron sights, more then 50 or more then 100 yards out. On all my rifles, if its my single shot H&R handi-rifle in the 308 Win or 270 Win barrels or my new Ruger Scout in 450 BM or my Win model 70 its all set on the first step or notch on ramp to shoot 50 yards out with iron sights, just for hunting deer or hunting wild boar in Florida when on vacation. If I am in woods I will just usually use iron sights. If I am near the field I will use a scope. Just speaking for myself cause with my experience in hunting most animals I got is most of them were less then 50 yards out. Did have a small problem with my 45-70 Marlin guide gun after I bought it a few years ago with the front sight. It was shooting to high or to low, don't remember which it was now. Marlin sent me another front sight and same problem. So if I remember right my gun smith put on a shorter or longer front sight post on the rifle and had no problems ever since. Do remember my gun smith did not file the front sight down, but that is a good idea if you have to make front sight shorter.

Now the problem is, that while bench rested, the gun shoots about 1" high at 10 yards with CCI Standard Velocity, and a little higher with Mini Mags. About 2" high at 25 yards. I have my rear sight all the way down. I cannot change the front sight, and I can't make it taller. Do I need to get about 1/32nd of an inch removed from the blades of the rear sight? What would you suggest? What would you do if it was your gun? Thank you.
Yes. Clean first with alcohol, then apply a good cold blue such as Oxphoblue. After one minute, clean off, repeat alcohol and blue three times, then finish with oil to set it.
It's worth noting that if you have run out of adusments on the sights, it's probably a good idea to ask someone else to shoot it before you make permanent changes to the gun.
That reminds me...if your over 16-18 and don't know how to adjust your sights.. learn before you go to shooting range and hunting. Seen too many grown men fumbling around with scopes and sights at gun ranges making complete asses out of themselves, going through $30 20# count box of ammo only to say ," close enough" and chuckle and head to their vehicle.I sometimes ask if they need help if they look like they want it.
Thanks, but understand that the issues are entirely unrelated. I'm describing how to adjust shots that are on paper, but not to zero. Your rifle or handgun is striking the paper other than where you desire it for whatever point along it's path. Bullet drop involves the trajectory at ranges other than that.

I was taught to remember the acronym F.O.R.S. Meaning forward (sight) opposite and rear (sight) same.

My 30-30 rear sight was all the way down and hitting a foot high at 50 yards, so i ordered a 1/8 inch higher front sight.... perfect now.
You have an approximately 18.5 inch sight radius between your back and front sights.

I would say 90% of people with a scope don't know what 1click =1/4 moa at 100yds means etched into the turret..
I think that depends on your particular scope , some scopes have 1/2 values & also 1/8 value adjustment .
That means one click will move the point of impact about 1/4 inch at 100 yards. Correct?
You really should have used a poster board or graph to illustrate this. It would help some understand it easyer.
