my supervisor for my dissertation who was my professor throughout my degree helped me a lot to get through the final year because of how badly I dealt with the pressure and the strain of finishing everything in 2021 that was still impacted by the virus.
i still talk to him sometimes on LinkedIn and I do want to eventually meet him again for a talk about our everyday lives and when i think about his help, it bring me to tears of happiness because of his kindness and when i thank him for it, he would always say it's my pleasure and it was my own hard work.

so life sentences are usually for:
      - murder of 2+ people (aggravated murder)
      - murder with “severe cruelty” (id argue this case qualifies but he was a rich man. money has *a lot* of power in russia)
      - sexual assault of a minor if the perpetrator already had a conviction of SA of a minor
      - sexual intercourse with a minor under age 16 if the perpetrator already had a conviction of a sexual crime against a minor
      - terrorism with nuclear/radioactive materials
      - hostage taking that resulted in an intended death
      - organizing a criminal organization (this is for the person at the top of the hierarchy like a mob boss)
      - production/selling of illegal drugs, usually if it’s in high amount
      - trafficking illegal drugs, usually if it’s in high amount
      - “infringement on life” on a government official to stop their political activity or for the purpose of revenge
      - sabotage resulting in intended death
      - infringement on life of a person who executed justice/law enforcement official
      - and genocide
so yeah, really varied. it’s wild that drugs charges can result in a life sentence but not this heinous crime

i'm sadly from russia. cases like this perfectly demonstrate how police work here and how defenseless students are, compared to rich "big shots". I study at a film university and the only time professor was actually fired for harassment was ... because the harasser and the victim were of the same gender ... yes ..... it's that bad.
although before that there WERE cases of harassment of young women by men, all of it was hushed up and victims were shamed and\or called "problematic". and if someone ever try to sue their harasser, he takes his "honored artist\director\actor\engineer of ussr" title, money, "connections" and as a result victim gets tons of victim blaming or exclusion from uni and so on.

When all of this happened then a lot of people talked : his misbehaviours were WELL know by almost all his napoleon reenactors friends, but "you know he had great costumes ! We could not ban him !". The whole reenactment sphere is guilty : if one day someone said "stop" then this young woman might still be alive.

The problem is that you get cancelled by the big people in the reenactment scene when you try to say something. And then you cannot warn the newer reenacters... There is at least one very well known Napoleon-reenactor who is also going after young women and nobody can say a word because he is friends with all the big people..

You still can't talk openly about your position otherwise you risk not only your life, but your family and friends. The stories about children taken away from parents and parents sent to jail for 20 years are unfortunately true and far more common than a couple that actually get media. Heyo, I'm a native Russian born in St. Petersburg. You have no idea how much - till this day! - how often people joke about St. Petersburg as about "the city of dismemberments". 🤔 Ironically, this is not the only scandalous case that happened at that very same period of time that was involving someone dismembering a victim. Also - twelve years is I would say a "normal" sentence for a murder in Russia. We don't have 40 years like USA. Basically, the bigger sentence after ±20 years is life in prison. There are rarely any exclusions.

Corruption at its best. Don't be fooled. He likely feels no remorse. It's just an act. He saw Anastasia as an object, an extension of him rather than another human with a will of her own, intelligence, and dreams. This is what most women experience in life, albeit maybe not to that extreme. I'm grateful for the men and women with empathy and morals out there. The world can be ugly, but it would be far worse off without beautiful souls out there to counter and fight evil. Stay safe everyone ~

As a native speaker, I can tell you that he didn't even try to act any significant remorse in a proper way. On the published record from the court one can hear straight away from his intonations and word choice, that pronouncing this text in the court for him was just a lame play and a formality to perform in order to decrease his potential sentence.
The only person he seemed to be sorry about was himself. And the words, his family, closed friends and lawyers were telling about Anastasia were absolutely infuriating. They portrayed her to be a monster and Oleg to be almost the hero for saving the world from this "terrible woman". It was all so full of rage and misogyny, that I felt sick to my stomach after almost every of their interview to the press
