so life sentences are usually for:
      - murder of 2+ people (aggravated murder)
      - murder with “severe cruelty” (id argue this case qualifies but he was a rich man. money has *a lot* of power in russia)
      - sexual assault of a minor if the perpetrator already had a conviction of SA of a minor
      - sexual intercourse with a minor under age 16 if the perpetrator already had a conviction of a sexual crime against a minor
      - terrorism with nuclear/radioactive materials
      - hostage taking that resulted in an intended death
      - organizing a criminal organization (this is for the person at the top of the hierarchy like a mob boss)
      - production/selling of illegal drugs, usually if it’s in high amount
      - trafficking illegal drugs, usually if it’s in high amount
      - “infringement on life” on a government official to stop their political activity or for the purpose of revenge
      - sabotage resulting in intended death
      - infringement on life of a person who executed justice/law enforcement official
      - and genocide
so yeah, really varied. it’s wild that drugs charges can result in a life sentence but not this heinous crime

i'm sadly from russia. cases like this perfectly demonstrate how police work here and how defenseless students are, compared to rich "big shots". I study at a film university and the only time professor was actually fired for harassment was ... because the harasser and the victim were of the same gender ... yes ..... it's that bad.
although before that there WERE cases of harassment of young women by men, all of it was hushed up and victims were shamed and\or called "problematic". and if someone ever try to sue their harasser, he takes his "honored artist\director\actor\engineer of ussr" title, money, "connections" and as a result victim gets tons of victim blaming or exclusion from uni and so on.
thank you for covering cases from russia, because here any blogger who speaks out negatively about the situation can easily get arrested and\or go to jail

Surprised to see a case from my home country, and from St Pete, too, a wonderful city I'm hoping to visit again soon. This case was big when it happened, and brought forward many stories of young students being mistreated by their professors. Russia's corruption runs deep, and the state of Russian higher education is a miserable one. Who knows when things can improve.

So sad for the girl and her family, and that his punishment for this crime was only 12 years and he was given nice accommodations in prison. My husband brought up this thought, since he wanted to be Napoleon so bad, then he should have been punished / executed by methods of that time period - the guillotine was the primary method of judicial execution during Napoleon’s reign. Or exiled him to a remote, primitive island...

A man I dated for a while, who calls me the odd time to catch up, became a high school teacher not long ago. During one conversation he mentioned how much he liked being a teacher, especially since a lot of his female students were really good looking and that I wouldn't believe how they dressed. Considering that he cheated on his first wife, as well as his second wife, and the daughter of one of his former employers, I could see how he might just carry on as usual with these attractive students. Teachers are not immune to taking advantage of their female students, they are after all in a power position over these young women.

Among the 892 Nobel laureates, 48 have been women; the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize was Marie Curie, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. She was also the first person (male or female) to be awarded two Nobel Prizes, the second award being the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, given in 1911.

And now imagine the horror of this man's friends. Yes, he had friends, mostly colleagues in scientific work. These were holidays - in Russia on November 7, "National Unity Day" and during the following days, guests came to the killer. And one of his friends later realized that he came to visit when the GIRL's LIFELESS BODY was lying in the next room. And I didn't notice anything unusual in the professor's behavior.

I am sickened at the thought of this gorgeous girl's life being snuffed out by such a narcissistic monster.
