Love your vids Ed. I changed out my blower motor cap, the first seal and blower motor but couldn’t figure out how to change the lower seal under the blower motor. How is that done? I was lucky and found no corrosion or rust in my 1980 450 SL. Thank you!!!
I enjoyed these two "rust" videos. When you are looking at potential purchases, do you use a bore scope to check areas such as the ones you've shown? I ask because it seems that it would work well and be more well received by the owner since you would not have to disassemble his or her car. This has been very helpful to me because I did not know they had that level of rust issues in the bulkhead area. Thanks!
I would try and use a bore scope in general yes, but I haven’t checked to see whether it’s possible to get it underneath the heater motor. One thing that would probably work is threading the scope from the central compartment and over the top of the internal wall with the outer, that way you could look at the condition of the outer chambers without having to remove the grills on top of them. Might give that a go if I have a moment.
yes I would agree with that. Sometimes covers can cause their own issues but for the R107 most of the rust is caused by rainwater entering the car and not leaving as it should, so a cover will largely stop that.
It depends on what needs doing, I’d say full bulkhead job at the SL shop, dash out etc + reconstruction of outer plenum chambers would be a bit more than 5k.

Luckily on my '85 I just needed to replace the lower 2 bolts that hold the blower motor. I used an epoxy and stainless steel bolts

Very informative, how much is 'thousands' and 'thousands' to replace a bulkhead...anyone had one done recently at the SL Shop? 4/5k ?
