@@shugemery Agree. I've been putting off testing suspension improvements to my hammocks for the last couple of months. Had hand surgery in late Feb and haven't been able to manipulate until last week or so. Last time out my whoopie set up took a beating during a severe wind storm. Wind gusts reached 40 mph and my hammock and tarp got all tangled up before I could unfurl it. Toggles were almost impossible to release that night. Have couple knots to try. Hope we all can get out before long. In the meantime, your videos are a welcome respite. Thanks much many times over.

Bought a Warbonnet hammock yesterday and while I'm waiting for it to arrive I'm watching as many hammock tips as I can watch. I bought the Lightweight Double Layer Original BlackBird Hammock as I'm 5'7" and I think it should be fine.
For success read the Hammock Set-Up part of this carefully written by Warbonnet......www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/hammocks-101/ "The BB/XLC/Traveler is designed to be laid in “off-center” so that your head is very close to the head end of the hammock while your feet are a lot farther away from the foot end. This allows the fabric under your legs to spread out properly when laying on the diagonal. To do this you’ll want to lay so that your eyes are aprox. even with the farthest side tieout (BB or XLC). Once you are laying in this correct spot you will then determine if you want the head/foot end higher or lower. Most people will want it setup so that when your eyes are even with the tieout that you are basically level/horizontal from hips to shoulders, so if your upper body seems too inclined or declined simply move the webbing up or down the tree trunk to adjust."
Thanks Shug, I've been hammocking for a few years but forget some of these good tips. Thanks for for going over it again. It's never boring if your doing it.
I'm an indoor hanger(full time for just over a month) so my hang was once and done but I've been having fun fiddling with getting my DIY underquilt set up just right. I got mine settled fairly quickly but have had some trouble getting my son's just right for him. Good to see you Shug :)
I watch and love all your videos. I want to add that the further apart your trees are, the higher up you have to move your tree straps to keep the hammock with the correct 30° angles and end up the comfortable height above the ground.
I have to say, for a backyard/backcountry shooter your home spun production value is pretty amazing. That opening shot in this was really cool...no idea how you did it. I have been dipping my toe in the water of this youtube thing with an older GoPro...because I like to be out in front of a trend, and I really think this youtube thing might catch on... ...anyway, I look at the stuff I am shooting in the backyard or when I'm out and about and comparatively it is like watching a monkey pounding a coconut against a rock trying to get it open. Your sense of humor still catches me off guard too. When you did that woodpecker impersonation I just about fell off my chair. I'm sure my neighbors heard me burst out laughing...and the closest one is a quarter mile away. That's right, not a Lol, a Bol, which is high praise. Also, the places I work are very remote so I get to camp out a week at a time. I am bringing a cheap Chillax hammock that I have had for a while but never really use. It's kind of short for me at just over 9 feet (the hammock, not me [I know how you think]), but using my new found Shugspertise I will give it a go. Making myself a simple underquilt today and bringing my usual camp gear so I'll have an air pad along. Looking forward to it. Thanks Shug.
Down here in the south, make sure to NEVER hang your hammock on any trees covered with hairy vines! Those trees are covered in poison ivy, and you don't want that urushiol oil to come in contact with anything as that residue stays active for a while! It may limit where you can hang your hammock, but so be it. Love your videos!
Pretty sweet idea on that 30 degree's and using your hand . New one on me . 7:54 Don't come knock'n when the fence is rock'n :D Another great video from Shug . Hope the MK is getting through this OK . 10-12 hrs is awesome ! Stay safe . gubs
My palms got sweaty when I saw you tighten Green Bean 2.0 like the last time. "Please don't sit in it for our sake! Please don't sit in it!" I knew you wouldn't, but that didn't stop the nerves, lol. You do any thing with the original? Make a gear sling or anything? You could call it "Mini-Be...an"!
got me a $17 hammock and a blanket from the house, goin out camping as soon as I can find a place close! can't see what could possibly go wrong, thank you for the tips on getting the damn thing hangin right- I've only fallen on my butt once, so I think I'm doing okay.
Shug, I watched another hammocker and he recommended your RUclips channel for learning about hammock camping. He was right on the money. Your You Tube videos are fantastic and loaded with humor, knowledge and wisdom. I watch your videos every night. My question is this. As throwing up a tent, ones looks for level ground. As you know the beauty of hammock camping is that level ground is not a requirement, however trees become an issue. I have a 12 foot Onewind double hammock. Just went out to set it up for the first time. Awesome. That is all I have to say. I think I will become a hammock camper from now on. However, the hammock, let's say faces north to south, the incline starts east and declines going west. I am 6 foot and a 250 pounder. The hammock was sagging low only inches from the ground. I had to raise the hammock ropes higher than my height, yet my Ridgeline upon sitting in the hammock becomes very tight. Can you give any advice in maintaining that 30 degree hang, also with your advise on the footend being higher? Thanks for your time in advice and knowledge. Keep up on those videos they are great and love watching and learning about my new style of camping in the outdoors. Whooooooooo buddy.
Slopes and tree spacing are tricky. Sometimes I have a tight ridgeline on some hangs. You just have to push the suspension higher up the tree. As to footend higher...it varies for everyone but it slides me into my sweetspot and I don't creep towards the foot end. Enjoy the hammock quest.
I'm in my mid 40s, I brought my wife, then girlfriend, camping when we were 17. She has never slept in a tent since. She hates them. Yesterday it was a warm day, so I set my hammock up in the garden, and when it was empty she asked if she could get in. I was stunned. I got her in, got her comfortable, a few minutes later she was asleep. She was in it for over two hours. She loved it. I've been teaching young people how to camp and hammock for years, and that was my proudest moment!
I use steps to estimate space between trees. Most adults have a heel to toe measurement of 30-38 inches. If you approximate 36 inches (3ft) I use 4-5 steps (12-15ft) to get the right tree spacing trunk to trunk. This gets me a pre-selected set of trees before I start hanging the hammock. Less bumbling around getting my gear up.
Go hammocking with shrug is like ' I wonder what setup he's going to be using this time? ' Your first how to was possible the one that got me into hammocking!
Nice to see Green bean again, Must be hard for you to revisit Green bean. I get it.. But the sacrifice you made in the original video really rings a bell in my training. Something not to do. Thanks Woo Buddy.
8:03 to 8:18 - My God that fence was moving an awful lot. I thought I was gonna get to see ya eat your own words. LOL Thanks for the new video. It's bookmarked to help the newbies on the Facebook groups.
@@shugemery Have you ever considered a video on using the pull outs on a hammock? Is there a way to use them without them being a tripping hazard? Sometimes you see them used on the head and foot ends - sometimes in the center of the hammock. Is there a right or wrong way? I've searched yours and other RUclipsrs videos on the subject and am coming up empty.
I never use them. No right or wrong way. Mainly used to spread a hammock or pull bugnet away from face. This videos show the pullouts a bit: ruclips.net/video/l1FVlLqVAwM/видео.html
Dang Shug I gotta get my hammock out. I think I forgot how to hang it. Lately I just been sleeping on a pile of leaves & putting my hammock tarp over likeva nice semi waterproof blanky. Lazy ground sleeping with a semi-sore neck. Funny my jammock is always with me. Now & then it feels nice as a soft sheet on the shore. Sure is a handy device. A camp chair, a flag & more. I still refuse to believe it is a parachute though.
Never thought about laying to the left or right. I think I let the way I lay be dictated by the view. Lol. Amsteel whoopie slings are the only way to go. But I do carry biners on occasion. As always a good video.
I'm a whoopie/strap/marlinspike hitch user but it confuses new hammockers. So just get the hang right...then choices and choices and choices and choices and choices and choices and choices and choices and choices and choices.....
Thanks for the vid there Shug and thanks for reminding us all about using at least 1" wide straps. Maybe a vid sometime on how your trees have held up using straps and not ropes would be nice.
I've also found feeding the tree strap through the loop wears out the loop quickly, especially if you like to swing around ( my kids I'm looking at you here) the part going through the loop rubs and frays the webbing remarkably easily. Crabs have a nice smooth surface which webbing rolls over with less wear. BTW you heard of DD hammocks UL carabiniers, I believe they are DMM, weigh 8g with a rate of 400 kg - not climbing rate but good for hammock. Love the camera work. Miss your slo mo throw in the air and catch, you used to do that a fair bit... Three camera juggle tutorial...?

It gets you in the ballpark.
Brilliant explanation, well presented examples.
Many thanks and Whooooo Buddy)))))
Love the Green Bean clone. I felt bad for original when you were just trying to teach us about the best set-up.
Still not over that one!!!
My palms got sweaty when I saw you tighten Green Bean 2.0 like the last time. "Please don't sit in it for our sake! Please don't sit in it!"
I knew you wouldn't, but that didn't stop the nerves, lol.
You do any thing with the original? Make a gear sling or anything? You could call it "Mini-Be...an"!
Toujours un plaisir mon ami !
Merci!
Love the effort put into these videos. Always a pleasure to watch
I thankee.....
got me a $17 hammock and a blanket from the house, goin out camping as soon as I can find a place close! can't see what could possibly go wrong, thank you for the tips on getting the damn thing hangin right- I've only fallen on my butt once, so I think I'm doing okay.
Hang-a-roo.
Falling on head worse than falling on butt so you are doing well.
Shug,
I watched another hammocker and he recommended your RUclips channel for learning about hammock camping.
Think you just lost your nappy spot~~!
😂😂 I thought you brought your wife then your girlfriend lol
Love it! Thanks Shug.
Y'elcome and thankee.
😎SHUG!😎
💥HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY FRIEND!💥
Still a little cool air left. Be a good day for a little BBQ - Get Meg on that.
Thankee. Having yellow cake and Meg is making me beef stroganoff!
I usually spread my arms out with hiking poles in them. Gets me in a good ballpark.
Great stuff as always Shug, love that painting so much
Thankee thankee.
Hahaha that beaver face at 4:26! Laughing my hat off!
That is my face...haaaa
Happy Birthday Shug!!
Thankee from the newly 62 year old.

Nice to see Green bean again, Must be hard for you to revisit Green bean. I get it.. But the sacrifice you made in the original video really rings a bell in my training. Something not to do. Thanks Woo Buddy.
That is the Greenbean the New 2.0 ....thanks.

I've had it a year. Get kinda lazy with it.
Shug!!! Happy birthday!
Thankee.
Thanks, Shug! I wanted to string one up for the kids.

Never have forgotten the knot-knot video.

Always informative and entertaining sir! 👏👏👏
I am bowing here....
New Green bean 2.0 holding up great I see.
Yessir...but it will never replace the original.
Haha!! Love the intro!!! 👍👍
Thankee for that.
8:03 to 8:18 - My God that fence was moving an awful lot. I thought I was gonna get to see ya eat your own words. LOL Thanks for the new video. It's bookmarked to help the newbies on the Facebook groups.
That fence has been hanging me since 2006. I still trust it. It flexes but holds. Much like some trees.
This videos show the pullouts a bit:

Dang Shug I gotta get my hammock out. I think I forgot how to hang it. Lately I just been sleeping on a pile of leaves & putting my hammock tarp over likeva nice semi waterproof blanky. Lazy ground sleeping with a semi-sore neck. Funny my jammock is always with me. Now & then it feels nice as a soft sheet on the shore. Sure is a handy device. A camp chair, a flag & more. I still refuse to believe it is a parachute though.
I miss getting mine out on the trail. Soon though I hope. Need the Northwoods! I due time. Damn pandemic!
Thank you, Shug!
Y'elcome.....
YOU'RE AMAZZZZZIIIINNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGG! love you!
I am bowing deeply here~~~!
Thanks for the vid there Shug and thanks for reminding us all about using at least 1" wide straps. Maybe a vid sometime on how your trees have held up using straps and not ropes would be nice.
You can see the tree I hang on in my yard is barely noticable and been hanging on it since 2006.
The camera trolly (or whatever) really gives some cool shots.
It is fun from time to time.
You remind me of robert williams 😂 your awesome man
Robert Redford?, Robert Goulet?, Robert Duvall? Whooooo Buddy))))
@@shugemery Oooops! i meant Robin Williams! hahah
Thanks Shug!👍👍
Y'elcome....
Good to see ya buddy
Righto~~~~
Another good reference for 30 degrees: the hour marks on a clock are marked out each 30 degrees around the circle
That I never knew....
Great video! Learned a lot!
Happy to hear that....Back to the Basics!
That is a good point. Not ever seen any DD hammock stuff. I've busted too many cameras doing that throw!!!!
